So I genuinely enjoy the setup of this: small French village, the isolation of being the last person remaining, a mixture of behind shoulder Resident Evil and Alan Wake in gameplay. My issue is that, aside from the god awful combat, where dodging is largely ineffective—something I'd likely look past under a different scenario—I crash at the end of combat consistently; twice in the two and half hours I played. This issue was mentioned to the developer just last year in September by another person, as well, with no acknowledgement. If this were fixed, I'd be willing to give Broken Pieces another try, but until then, it doesn't seem worth the frustration of technical issues that are clearly outside my control.

I have no idea why people here compare this game to Resident Evil. It’s not even close. Before I start, I should say that I didn’t really like the game. As some reviews put it, it’s “broken pieces.” And that’s pretty accurate. The game feels like a patchwork made from completely different elements. And while the puzzles are mostly fine, the gunplay and the story are awful. The plot itself is intriguing, but it has neither a proper beginning nor an ending. It feels like they just dropped the story halfway through because they had to rush it out. There are so many cliffhangers setting up a second season, which will probably never be released. And the fights… The game honestly could have been much better without them. The combat feels clunky, especially when you’re constantly shooting at the same bots with terrible aim. But the biggest disappointment for me is the timer. I hate games with timers. Here, it’s basically used to force you to go back home after you’ve traveled far away. You’re already tired from sneaking around and looking for clues to solve a puzzle, and then the developers artificially make the whole process longer. Not cool. There’s also a choice between a third-person camera and a fixed camera, like in old-school adventure games. I played with the third-person view, but now I think the game might have been better with the other option. If you chose one, you can't change it
What a frustrating game! Completely non-sensical story - I had no idea what was going on. Perhaps something has been lost in translation as much of the dialogue made little or no sense. I played using the over-shoulder camera option, but this is clumsy and janky. If you're going to play it, I'd suggest the fixed camera option. You don't seem to be able to swap once you've picked a camera option. Or at least I couldn't find a way. I played with a keyboard and mouse which was clunky and fiddly. Moving around was quite odd - every time you stop it resets your viewpoint by spinning you round, which is really disorientating. Perhaps it's better played with a controller; that is the recommendation. The 8pm time cut-off mechanism is ridiculous; you barely have time to get to your destination before you're forced to abandon your objective and go back home to bed. And there's no fast-travel option, so there's a lot of running back-and-forth. I played in low-combat mode. In this mode there's very little combat and the enemy are easy to defeat, so it would have made more sense to remove the time cut-off and the task of collecting scraps to make more ammo that you don't need. There are some optional tasks, but even using walk-throughs and videos, and searching every pixel, I couldn't find the items I needed to complete them. Whether I just didn't hit the right triggers or the game was buggy, I don't know, but it was quite frustrating. Oh, and the ending is very disappointing. It's a shame I had such a poor experience with this game as the environment was lovely. This would have been so much better if the devs had just made it a straight-forward adventure game with a story that actually had some coherence. I'd give this a score of 2/10.
Unfortunately, Broken Pieces did not work for me, and after roughly three hours I decided to stop playing. My main issue is that the story never managed to fully draw me in. I found it difficult to stay invested in what was happening, and I also struggled to form any real connection with the protagonist. The combat was another significant drawback. It often feels clunky and unresponsive: dodging is awkward, enemies take several shots to defeat—even four bullets from an eight-round pistol—and there is a noticeable delay between each shot. Movement also feels slow and aiming with a controller lacks precision. I cannot say whether the experience is better with a mouse and keyboard, but with a controller it was not enjoyable. That is especially disappointing because the demo had made a positive impression on me. I liked the premise of being alone in a small town, slowly uncovering what had happened and trying to find a way forward. In the full game, however, that initial sense of mystery quickly gave way to boredom. On top of that, I encountered several technical issues, including graphical glitches, noticeable slowdowns in certain areas—sometimes dropping below 20 FPS—and crashes that sent me back to Windows 11. Given my system configuration, I am confident these issues were not caused by my graphics card. Overall, Broken Pieces had an interesting idea and a promising atmosphere, but the weak story engagement, frustrating combat, and technical problems made it hard for me to continue. It is a shame, but I cannot recommend it.
Really impressive for a 5-person team to put out a game with such a thoroughly modeled town (exterior and interior). My favourite part was roaming Saint-Exil. The storyline was interesting, I wish I understood more of what was going on
(who were the shadow figures? what were the glowing orbs/other worlds? was the town destroyed by the ancient being or were the townspeople abducted by the government? why does Elise sound like she's writing to Pierre from a mental hospital at the end of the game?]
Many questions were answered in playing, some open-ended questions are fun. The game's music tapes were awesome! Will a soundtrack be released?
