About
Broken Alliance is an indie turn-based adventure strategy game with strong RPG elements, inspired by old school classics such as King's Bounty, Disciples, Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, Master of Magic and... with a fresh deckbuilding twist. We want to bring you a revival of the classics combined with our signature focus on storytelling and a deep, challenging tactical combat experience from industry veterans who have worked on Disco Elysium, the Heroes of Might & Magic series, and more!
The world is collapsing from overuse of magic and you need to side with one of four factions to save it. Side with the nature-loving Paradise, the tehnological powerhouse of Forge, the traditionalist Anchorage, or the fanatical Phobos: you choose. Build and expand your kingdom, recruit mythical creatures as the Champions of your cause, solve ancient puzzles, unearth mighty artefacts and make or break alliances. In Early Access, only Anchorage will be playable initially, with the other factions to follow as we plan to bring you new content with each update.

Broken Alliance features a card-based combat system that allows unique gameplay for each faction. Build up your deck from your Champions and Artefacts you find during your adventures!
Earn the loyalty of your Champions, guiding them down their own personal quests to bring them to the apex of their potential, or have them make the ultimate sacrifice for the world of Eol to have a chance at salvation.
Unlock the secrets of your ancestors, discover the motivations of the four Factions, and meet a variety of unique characters, all while writing your own story on how you want to save the world.

Short, replayable story with Choices that Matter

2/10. This is so pretty. Such fantastic pixel art, and quite a lot of it. But that's the only good thing about it, otherwise it is an unfinished mess. When you review an early access game, do you give them a free pass on the badly designed or broken parts of the game, or do you review the game as is? As it is, this isn't much fun; the core gameplay, the turn-based combat, is poorly explained, and the UI is pretty unusable. But the glimpses of gameplay that you can see look very interesting. I am very hopeful that the devs will make the simple quality-of-life changes that would make this a fun game instead of a frustrating exercise. I do not think that it should even be in early access, given what I've seen, but rather a closed beta tested on people who have never played this game and certainly don't have the developers sitting next to them explaining each and every mechanic every time they run into a roadblock. But there is very clearly a lot of enthusiasm here, not just some kind of asset flip, and for that reason, I'm giving it a recommendation because I wish that in time, this will grow to be an exciting and fun turn-based strategy game with RPG characteristics, a genre I definitely enjoy. Meanwhile, this should be free or 99 cents at best. it is barely a tech demo, and it's been a long while since there was an update.
First thing: While I do recommend it for the right Audience and I see a lot of potential in the game, this thumbs up has some grains of salt that should not be overlooked. The game is a bit like classic Heroes of Might and Magic (especially HoMM 3), with great Pixelart that has a suprising amount of detail despite being so small sprites. You can see the love that was pourred into the design and especially the world building. Instead of "units" of creautres, each sprite on the battlefield is actually only 1 Creature, or better said a Hero who can gain EXP and Levelups. You can only deploy as many Heroes as the Enemy has Units, so cant just overpower them. This keeps the battles more Interesting IMO. The battle format is done with a set of cards, reminds me personally of Marvel Midnight Suns, but each hero has their on set of energy, a lot of cards can be used by any Hero, some are specialised. I like the battlesystem, but it might not be for everyone. Movement on the Map is not really round based and just like classical HoMM you can find hotspots with different uses (healing, buying, quests or just worldbuilding etc). You also have a Main City (it doesnt look like you will have more cities in the future atm), which you can expand, this gives you spells, healing or new cards for your battle deck. The prologue to the story is extremly well done, it is apart from the player Avatar (which I would change bc the Avatar is not choosable so she can have a voice) fully voiced and I personally really enjoyed the voice acting, but I understand if you dont like it or if the narrator can be a bit annoying (but then just shut off the voices). the Rest of the sound design is also pretty good imo. After the prologue a new button appears "new game", can be easily overlooked, as you can see in other reviews (in all honestly the reviews saying the game stops after the prologue and the rest promised on the game site was a lie and the dev responding that this is not true is what had me want to investigte further XD). There you can choose which factions story you want to experience (atm we have mission 1 of 2 factions). For these campaigns you design your own commander, you have the choice between 2 races for each faction and a lot of customisation options, which actually show up on the sprite as well (I talked about the detail already). I played the first mission of the first faction already and now started the one from the second (which is the last thing added). This all sounds good, if the game is your style, right? So why do I say to take the recommendation carefully. Well, at the moment the game is in a bad spot, it is playable and works and especially if you get it on sale you will probably be ok with the content you have at the moment. But sadly it could be that it will be all we get for the game. The developer explained that they are in a bad spot (their game Craftcraft sadly didnt sell to well either, which also meant that Broken Alliances lost financial backing). So sadly there wasnt any new update since June and there a lot of bugs, nothing that stops you from completing the main quests of a map and the prologue is so linear that it is almost unaffected. They range from minor, like repeated tutorial windows you can just close, to more affecting like spells not working in combat, to severe enough to stop you from completing side quests (which is sad bc the maps are filled with interesting little sidequests). I really really do hope the developer can get back on their feet or find another way to fund the further devolpment of the game (maybe a gofund me, so people can support without you needing to give them pledges/stretchgoals or some sort of financial support by your state or sth like that). If you want to help the Dev without paying money yet (which is totally understandable given the state of the game), I recommend at least wishlisting it to keep an eye on or checking out Craftcraft (cozy Craftingshop simulator with equally good VA like this games prologue). I wish the dev all the best. You have a game with high potential here and you have shown with the content thats already here that you are talented enough to pull it off!

Wowww, gorgeous pixel art.
