Something like 30 minutes in and I was already fed up with clap trap. Generally there is too much banter in this game, in Borderlands 3 it felt more natural, but in Borderlands 4 it was constant, and just not good. It felt forced, it was annoying, and you can't disable it. Similarly the dialog was often too long without an option to skip, so I would just be stuck waiting for an uninteresting conversation to end. The actual gameplay is pretty good and the movement feels nice.
Runs like absolute garbage, while also looking somehow the same or worse than Borderlands 2.
I don't really get the negative reviews honestly. It's a borderlands game. If you like borderlands, you'll love this one. I have what used to be a high-end PC, so I didn't notice any performance issues. Maybe on mid-range PCs it sucks, but I haven't experienced it. Seriously if you're a Borderlands fan with a solid rig it's the easiest buy in the world. Especially on sale.
The borderlands game that was closest to being genuinely good with no asterisks, but feels like there was a company moron-goblin that would occasionally walk into the dev room and suggest ridiculous ideas. The gameplay is fantastic, possibly the best the franchise has ever been. It expands on every aspect that makes the previous entries fun and doubles down on the parts that are the most enjoyable. The movement is as tight as ever, the skill trees are the most interesting with the most varied mechanics since 2 and the actual vault hunters themselves are all uniquely fun in their own ways making each one a fun time all by themselves. The great gameplay is punctuated with one of the most redundant and repetitive open-world designs AAA has seen. I know a lot of people clown on the Ubisoft style of open-world sandbox, but I'm one of the people who actually tends to enjoy them. They're very good brain-off kinds of games, similar to a lot of the job-sim titles, where you can immerse yourself in a cool aesthetic and fun gameplay and just turn off your brain as you slowly chip away at a huge map with a million small objectives. The issue with Borderlands 4 is that the open world rewards are meaningless, don't reward the player to do them in particular, and don't feel like chipping away at a map quite like a good open-world sandbox checklist can. The issue possibly stems from the fact that the game has a very hot-and-cold relationship with its own combat and level design. I've said before in a review for a different Borderlands game, but the franchise has always had absolutely stellar level design which elevates its gameplay into something much greater than the sum of its parts. BL4 also has this good solid level design, but it also acts like its not an open world. The random encounters all run the limits between pointless arena and overdesigned arena and there's so little consistency because there's no real way the game could develop linearly. In previous titles, each arena gets space to breathe, because it's ultimately a linear game. When you'll explore certain areas is all but guaranteed, as the progress is tied to the main quest, simple as. But BL4, doing the BOTW style of open world where you're given several objectives, then let loose, means that there's no real gradation of the arenas and enemies. You start out fighting Pistol Thugs and 40 hours later, when you're in the second-to-last region, you're fighting Pistol Thug Variant at level 40. I don't feel like commenting on the story much because It's the part that left me the coldest as it commits what is possibly Borderlands' greatest sin as a franchise. A bit of a spoiler warning for this part but: Borderlands 3 had a bad story that could've been good, but was undermined by being written for Lilith. Everything in BL3 happens because Lilith needs it to happen and the story ends on Lilith sacrificing herself, making the player's involvement feel pointless. Why was I needed for Lilith to go and save the borderlands? You feel like a mailboy at the end of the game and it makes your struggle feel like a wasted effort. BL4 starts off on the right foot. It establishes the villain, who is extremely charismatic and fun to listen to (even if his interactions are limited due to the open world nature) and gives a lot more agency to the player characters as well as giving them room for real growth within the title they're introduced in- Something completely fresh for the franchise. And just as the player thinks the story has a direction its headed in, it drops the bomb. Lilith, who was supposed to be dead after 3, turns out to be alive. She's rescued and the story from then on does the exact same thing that made BL3's story bad. Listen, I'm not a Lilith turbo-hater. I thought she was fun in 1 to play as, and I thought she was cute in 2. But by now? I'm deathly sick of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ character. She is clearly someone very high up's favorite doll to parade around the storyline, but I'd like to think that I have some authority to speak on the topic as someone who's been playing these games since the very first one came out. We. Are. Sick. Of. Lilith. Please stop writing her in. I don't have a problem with her being left as a "Legend" of the borderlands. Hell, I can easily imagine a story in which Lilith's IMPACT as a person is felt in the plot and affects events in the story, but for goodness sake, please stop adding this character to the plotline. She's possibly the worst example of a Mary Sue character, where when she shows up, she's the bestest coolest vault hunter to ever live and is a personality black hole that turns every interesting plot point into the "Lilith doing random crap podcast" Ultimately BL4 is a game that's almost good. Its close to being amazing. But is hampered by the devs inability to realize their full vision or potential due to internal problems. The game also has a million optimization problems and ran horribly on release. I have a relatively good setup, and I was still able to play through the game on release even despite the bad optimization but I still had problems with frame drops especially during combat.
Amazing looter shooter, great fun and lot of stuff to do. Level design and visuals are awesome. Good progression, skills and enemies. Gunplay and guns are amazing and very fun. Story is good and I liked it overall. Boss fights are very good, unique and memorable. Only one major flaw is that performence is not so great. I had lot of fun and it's worth the price. 9/10 (8/10 for the optimazation issues).
I love the borderlands franchise. I really wanted to like this game but i wont lie, i am sure i'm close to finishing and have more cons than pros. this is easily the weakest game they have mad. bugs every where. mapping garbage. main bosses feel like there un finished why world bosses are harder then the main ones. world feels big and empty. this really feels like an incomplete game, like they just wanted to get it out the door. side missions are either boring and short. or are just fetch quest. there has been moments that i liked or chuckled but there few and far between. sadly i just say go replay any other borderlands game you will have more fun. the villains are forgettable and Roland 2 should have been called so would have been funny at least if they did that.
If you like borderlands, then you'll probably enjoy BL4. It feels a lot more like an evolution of BL3 than a full-blown new game. Unreal 5 engine performance issues, even with top spec PC (7800X3D+5070Ti) are annoying, but the game play is good and the graphics look great.
Borderlands 4 runs and plays well on all of our systems. On my setup, playing at a 3440x1440 DLSS Performance I play locked at 100 fps. As an OG fan, I still feel Borderlands 2 had a better story. The gameplay in BL4 is undoubtedly better. Overall, it is a clear step up from Borderlands 3 in my opinion. Hard to believe some of these reviews as our tests on computers just under a decade old have all produced 60+fps with settings optimised with the only issue potentially being shader load times when loading for the first time ;)
I am now six months in with Borderlands 4. I thought: I’ll wait six months after the release to see if it runs better on PC. I have an Nvidia 5070, so definitely not the worst PC. Today I started it up again and set the settings to 'Normal' and 'High', but the game is still stuttering and the screen is lagging. It doesn’t look good and graphically it's still really bad. After half a year, nothing has happened on the gameplay side of things. It's just another mega-company completely missing the mark and, in my eyes, robbing people's wallets again. What has happened to the gaming industry nowadays? It's a real shame, and it costs 59.99 euros. have to say no
Ultimate Vault Hunter still bugged even game released more than a year, wtf are you going Gearbox I solve this issue by join my friend that has same progress and Wildcard quest appear.
