I enjoyed Gray Zone Warfare early on, but over time several decisions have pushed me away from the game. One of the biggest issues has been the increasing focus on Twitch campaigns and exclusive rewards. A large portion of the community has voiced opposition to locking items behind Twitch promotions, yet criticism often seems to be met with locked threads, removed discussions, or heavy moderation rather than meaningful engagement. The backlash to the most recent campaign became one of the most upvoted negative discussions on Reddit in less than 24 hours, which should be a sign that many players are unhappy with the direction. The gameplay itself also suffers from growing frustration. Cheating has become increasingly common, to the point where it feels comparable to other extraction shooters that struggle with the same problem, perhaps even approaching Tarkov levels at times. PvE has its own issues. Many PVP focused players use PvE servers to farm loot rather than their PVPVE server, clearing valuable areas and killing HVTs for gear before others can reach them. Players trying to complete missions often spend hours searching for a target that has already been killed with low respawns or arriving at locations that have been completely stripped. Those same players can then transfer back to PvPvE servers with the gear they acquired and focus purely on PvP. This creates massive time sinks and takes much of the enjoyment out of PvE. A few months ago, I spent three days trying to complete one mission that required killing an HVT and another that required finding a specific key. Every attempt was ruined by players repeatedly farming those locations before anyone else could complete their objectives. In the end, the friends I had bought copies of the game for became so frustrated that they quit and never looked back. Time is limited, and wasting multiple days because mission progress depends on competing with loot farmers is simply not fun. Without private servers (not their idea of private servers with is servers for select twitch streamers with special controls for them) or a true friends-only option, players who simply want to enjoy cooperative PvE are forced to compete with server looters and campers.
Great game, but the devs are predatory AF
I want to start this review by saying the game is absolutely wonderful, and I have banked 280 hours in a couple months of playing... However the Devs are incredibly predatory. The base game is $40, but then they have several editions to help you start out, and if we are being honest you almost need them as the locker space is so limited early on... Or you will spend more time managing your locker than you will be going out and running missions. So basically you are looking at spending an additional $25-68. But then beyond that they tease the upcoming Twitch drops, but then say to get 8 of the 16 cosmetics during these Twitch drops you have to pay for 8 Twitch subs to earn them. THAT IS ANOTHER $40 MINIMUM IF YOU WANT TO UNLOCK THESE AS WELL. I have never seen a game be as predatory as Gray Zone Warfare and I have probably 15-20k hours in Black Desert Online. Great game that is ran by some of the greediest devs I have ran into; I cannot recommend this game any longer due to seeing how bad the devs seem to be about this.
And to clarify why it upsets me:
It is understandable to make a $5-10 DLC for these 8 cosmetic items, but asking us to shell out $40 to random content creators while also being a very brief time frame to earn these is next level "wtf?" Then to top it off they are doing this at a time when the global economy is in the tank and inflation rates have been some of the highest in modern history. This is absolutely appalling behavior imo. I truly hope the devs reassess this, because I really cannot recommend this on Steam or to my friends if this honestly financially abusive behavior continues. I have never seen another game do stuff like this... Expensive tactical/elite/supporter bundles, and then another $40 for 8 cosmetics? Absolutely insane to me.
WATCH OTHER PEOPLE PLAY ON TWITCH FOR ITEMS, SO FUN! Honestly its a giant empty map, the enemy AI is trash and they are all bullet sponges. Oh and if you want PVP prepare to be one tapped in the head by a cheater you never even saw lol. Arma reforger is a much much better game in basically every aspect.
I wanted to love Grey Zone Warfare, but after hundreds of hours, I can't recommend it anymore. The cheating problem is still one of the biggest issues in the game. Too many encounters leave you wondering whether you were outplayed or simply killed by someone cheating. Legitimate players are the ones paying the price while the problem continues to hurt the experience. Then there's the XP grind. It's exhausting. Progression feels intentionally padded to keep players grinding instead of rewarding them for their time. Leveling isn't challenging—it's just repetitive and tedious. The amount of time required to unlock basic progression is enough to make you want to pull your hair out. PvE has its own problems. The shared loot system is terrible. By the time you finally travel across the map to complete a task or reach a high-value area, another player has usually stripped everything clean. You spend more time searching empty containers than actually playing the game. That's not immersive—it's frustrating. What makes this even harder to accept is that the developers have confirmed private servers for content creators and selected streamers. If private servers exist, why not offer friends-only or private PvE servers for everyone? It would solve so many issues with empty loot spawns, constant competition over quest items, and make the PvE experience far more enjoyable. Instead, regular players are stuck fighting over leftovers while influencers get a better experience. The Twitch campaign only adds to the frustration. While some rewards are free, other exclusive items require gifting or purchasing Twitch subscriptions through participating streamers. It sends the message that the game is more interested in promoting creators and monetizing events than rewarding the people who actually play every day. Grey Zone Warfare still has incredible potential, but potential doesn't make a great game. Right now, it feels like the developers are prioritizing influencers over the average player. Fix the cheating. Respect players' time by reducing the XP grind. Give everyone access to private or friends-only PvE servers. Stop turning community events into marketing campaigns. Until those things change, I can't recommend this game. "I'm not writing this because I want the game to fail. I'm writing it because I want it to succeed. Grey Zone Warfare has one of the best concepts I've played in years, but right now it's being held back by design decisions that frustrate the people who want to support it the most."
+ the deepest sound design + best jungle/forest atmosphere + god-tier weapon customization + punchy ballistic system + environmental storytelling + photorealistic lighting and foliage + perfect balance of catchy relaxing gameplay and hardcore military sim + that's not Tarkov - no auto - no stamina - no Rusty 💩
Its hard for me to narrow down into a short description, what I like about this game.... If I were to really shorten it down, I'd say that this is easily the best open world survival shooter I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. But if I were to expand on why, I'd say : There is simply no game, that I've ever played, that has implemented all of these mechanics and done it properly. This game encompasses everything that I have always liked about games like, Escape from Tarkov, Call of Duty: DMZ, DayZ, Squad, and even Fallout... All while shedding all of the gimmicks, unbalanced game METAs, no time limits, no live service bloatware, and over all, virtually no limits as to what you can explore, guns you can build (some of the best gun building in any game!), and fights you can pick. This game satisfies almost every single itch I have for shooters, survival games, open worlds, exploration, realism, and all of that while maintaining a strong gameplay balance and some of the best multiplayer gameplay I have ever experienced. Even when I have poor connection or the server has high ping, IT IS STILL SMOOTH! And on the topic of multiplayer, you can tell that the community and players adore this game, never have I played a multiplayer game that was so naturally non-toxic. You can tell that everyone on the game is happy to be apart of this, everyone is infinitely helpful to eachother and even player from other factions have come to my aid from time to time. You can really feel the love for the game. And the devs... very few studios listen to their player base the way that Madfinger does, I have yet to experience and update or patch for this game that wasn't meaningful. They are listening, they know what we want and they are delivering, we know good things take time and all that we can ask is that they use the time well. Up to this point, they have excelled at making the most out of the time they've had, each major update brings real tangible changes to the game that have always improved the feel and flow of gameplay. Each patch has addressed real issues, big and small, that have refined the game into the beautifully crafted world that is Lamang Island, each update bringing more and more content from whole new locations to hundreds of weapon parts and accessories. This game never ceases to amaze me and from the looks of it, their nowhere close to being done. I purchased this game day one, immediately recognized its potential and have backed it to the fullest since then, I am EXTREMELY excited to see what is in store for us in the future and I hope that one day I can shake the hands of each individual team member and tell them what an incredible job that they have done. TOP TIER GAME!! DON'T SLEEP ON IT!!
The EULA has a censorship clause to remove your content if you talk about the hacking or cheating problem in the game. This makes it so that you cannot get an accurate impression on the scale of this problem before you buy. As annoying as it is, I recommend checking the EULA before you buy and only buy if this censorship clause is removed and the cheating problem is publicly addressed.
A fantastic game! It is in development, but here's what it does right: - Immersive ambience, open world exploration, and plenty of equipment and weapons to tinker with. - PvE mode is very chill, a fun experience if you want to play the game casually with some friends in a way that involves coordinating and having a sort of group-adventure into the jungle. - PvPvE mode is allegedly the "true" experience - were it not for try-hards resorting to cheating which results in extremely artificial experiences where you opponent 'knows where you are' or flawlessly is capable of head shotting all opponents they encounter regardless of time, day, terrain, or where they are. There are 'cheats' which allow these losers to 'see through walls', auto-lock onto your head, and grant them ESP - which sort of defeats the purpose of even attempting to have any sort of realistic combat encounter thanks to these folks using artificial means to prove ... how skilled their cheats are at breaking a game. It's a well thought-out, put together game that is not for everyone. If you like games like STALKER, ARMA, or other tactical shooters, this game hits a nice sweet spot.
175 hours since april 4 and i still load it up most nights. gray zone warfare is a pvpve extraction shooter from madfinger games and its still in early access. the devs say its about 20 percent done. it already runs better than most games that call themselves finished. the ai is what keeps me coming back. the spearhead 0.4 update and the 0.4.2 patch reworked how enemies think. patrols reposition mid fight now, they flank, they dont sit still and trade shots. they also stopped sniping me from across the entire map which was the worst part of the old build. accuracy got tuned so theyre dangerous at the range theyre supposed to be and not a meter past it. high tier enemies are a real problem again. theres a new player visibility readout that tells you how detectable you are and it changes how you move through a compound. madfinger wanted it hardcore again and it shows. lamang island is the map and every zone reads different. tiger bay, midnight sapphire, the outlying towns, the jungle in between. 0.4 cleaned up the sightlines and packed the world with detail so you have a reason to push into places you used to skip. you learn the terrain by walking it until the landmarks stick. the loop is simple and brutal. take a contract, fly out, do the work, call the heli, get home alive. die and your gear stays on your body. die again before you reach it and the first stash is gone for good. inventory is tetris, ballistics are deep, zeroing your optic matters at range. nothing is handed to you. the tasks send you everywhere. eyes and ears, harvest moon, the first recon cycle that every faction runs at the start. handshake, gunny and lab rat keep the work coming. the writing hints at the islands dark lore without ever spelling it out and im not going to spoil it. roadside picnic and stalker are clearly in the dna. the audioscape is the thing i didnt expect to love this much. the jungle never shuts up, frogs and insects and foliage moving, and it all matters because footsteps and gunfire cut through it. you hear a firefight across the valley and you know someone else is out there working a different objective. the extraction heli is a sound you learn to want. positional audio has won me more fights than my aim has. its early access so things break and balance shifts patch to patch. thats the deal you sign up for. if you want a tactical extraction shooter that respects your time and punishes your mistakes this is the one. buy it.
I am a strictly PVE player, and have had this game for maybe a week now. I LOVE this game, HOWEVER, I have been BANNED for 90 DAYS for quote "Using third party software for your mouse". I can with 110% certainty tell you that i have NEVER had third party software for my mouse and have never cheated in any game in my life because i am boring and don't even know how I would do that. Maybe the Anticheat saw my wireless mouse as some sort of cheat, if so that is a HUGE Problem in the system. Very, Very disappointed in this game and cannot currently recommend it to anyone for this reason. As ive stated before, ive only had this game for maybe a week, ive put 50 hours into it already because i was having so much fun with my cousin. But to lose everything i had on my character and have a 90 day ban put against me for something i did not do is absolutely unacceptable. I have appealed the ban but if this isnt fixed soon my cousin and I will find a new game to play and I recommend you do the same. The only ban ive ever had in my life being to this BS is just ridiculous.
