Killed some cops, kissed a girl, made some booze, sold some booze, created a communist workers' paradise. ACAB
Solved every problem diplomatically, made friends with a fed, became a whiskey communist mayor, supported an experimental theater production that turned out to be a hit and scared the rich, and created a new college town. 10/10
This is a reluctant thumbs-down, as there are things to like. The general stats system works well and intuitively. Build your character, make choices that fit the stats, with some moral choices and prioritization thrown in that fit the story pretty well. The writing throughout is also solid. This isn't a bad work, and I'd be genuinely curious if the author tried another. I feel it really drops off at the end. The author clearly wanted a big final act, but seemed to lack the inspiration or, by that point, effort. So a big complex problem suddenly appears and isn't even really explained, one choice is made, and everything works itself out pretty much immediately. The ending is amazingly unsatisfying. In addition, it still doesn't really seem that many of the choices throughout matter. For example, no matter what you do, you still get caught twice, and at the same times. All other run-ins work out pretty easily, or maybe I just didn't care because I knew success or failure were pretty much pre-determined. For a CYOA, that's an almost unforgivable sin to me, though I was willing to look past it for an interesting story, which this was until the end.
this story is a masterpiece in my opinion and i am so glad i get the chance to tell yall. this story of course takes place in the beginning of the prohibition era and you start off as a no name bootlegger who begins with a few friends. i wont go into more detail, but the game's story drew me in so much that i played through this game in 4 hours. you become a badass if you make the right choices :)
From what I've seen so far, this game really forces you to sit up straight and figure out exactly what it is you want to shoot for. There's some CYOA games that kinda let you glide on by making middle-of-the-road decisions cause you don't want to piss anyone off, but without making a strong stand and specializing in something, you'll wind up dead broke or dead to rights. One thing I do wish could be expanded on was the "immigrant" origin. I understand going with a one-size-fits-all approach to it, that's not really the point of the game, but I feel like life as a backcountry moonshiner would be materially different for someone who's Irish vs. Italian or German.
Neat Prohibition-era story. Enjoyed it!
This game let me be a bad person and suffer the consequences. I wanted to role-play an ambitious, morally compromised person that constantly struggled between his own self-interest and protecting the people he loved. Bootlegger definitely let me do that, and my eventual downfall was very satisfying. Everyone I cared about left me! The 1920s setting is full of great details. The writer's enthusiasm for the period is obvious.
Good
Nice little game, definitely leaning towards the more managerial CYOA books but its still nice. The writing is good overall and the choices are fun and engaging. I wish there was more of a steady plot like a throughline from beginning to end but whats here isn't bad, its just a little safe.
