Put yourself in the captain’s seat of a B-17 bomber, select your plane, select your crew and plot your path over war-torn Europe. Watch your elevation, watch your formation, and watch very carefully when you are over the target. This classic was a bestseller in the early 1990s.

When Microprose stated they were coming out with 3 new B-17, I, along with everyone else, got VERY excited. I'm from the Old school so I remember way back when Microprose put out really GOOD Simulation games. Heck, I have spent HOURS and DAYS on B-17 back then. So I added Bomber 3 to my wish list and like everyone, I waited. And waited and waited. So when it was FINALLY released today, I immediately and downloaded it. You have to be a fan of the B-17 games from way back when because the graphics in this game are from that time and will do your head head compared to today's graphics. The frame rate is a bit too slow for my tastes and if you've never played a B-17 game before, there is no Tutorial so good luck figuring out where to click or what to do. Not there's much. I'm hoping the next two B-17 games, B-17 The mighy 8 Redux and the Bloody 100th will be FAR better then this one. It's like Microprose didn't put ANY effort into updating it, they just released it. All this waiting...for that/ Shame on Microprose.
Difficult to recommend this unless you have some real love for the original release. This is that same game and yes it works on a modern system but that is about all you can say.
over $10 for a 30 year old abandonware game with no optimisation. What exactly am i paying for? Making me think microprose should just stay dead, if they going to necro trash like this. Avoid this unless your willing to pay for a piece of nostalgia pizza.
I don't get the hate from people. The game works as intended. Its a game that came out in the early 90's and people are expecting some kind of DCS like quality. It's a nostalgia like game. Don't expect high end graphics and depth. The game was originally on a floppy disk. Now is it fun? Personally to me it is. Its not a flight sim but more of a management type game if thats the words to use. I would recommend it if you like playing retro games.
As others have stated this is a very old title from the early day of simulation also its more of an adventure strategy title rather than a true flight sim saying that it offers a glimpse into early games and what programmers managed to do with the tech of the day. The game was originally a Mac title released in the early 1990's by Deadly games who also did and M4 Sherman 'sim', a battle of Britain game and 2 UBoat games in the same style. These games were renowned for the quality of thier speech back in the day which added to the games's atmosphere. In this entirely faithful re-release In the re-release Microprose have kept the original style of graphics and sounds and ported the game over to run on today's PCs The controls have been posted by the devs in a steam news blog. The game is entirely mouse driven and you are mainly in the cockpit and navigator stations with the gunnery & bombardier stations becoming active when fighters are within range etc. Overall this is a tribute release and should be treated as such and not judged against modern titles, its nice to dip into these old classics occasionally to step back to an earlier era of gaming to experience some of the first mil-sims, Thanks Microprose for the re-release.
This is the same Bomber III that was released in 1989 for the Macintosh. The graphics are the same. The controls are the same. It is simply updated to run on current hardware. If you like the game then, it can be fun to play it again after 35 years. If you are looking for a game that is up to current standards, this is not it. As for me, I very much liked this game back in the day. It is almost an implementation of a board game in what was then Hypercard format. It is fun to play it again after all these years and still really hard to get through an entire tour.
This release is shameless, disrespectful, and greedy, plainly put. Save your hard-earned money. I won't even go into all the reasons why, as that would be more effort than Microprose put into releasing this game after making fans wait so long. ♥♥♥♥ like this obliterates consumer trust and whoever it is currently running Microprose is apparently aiming straight for the hard deck, and I wish them good luck in their endeavor.
This is the original release made compatible with modern systems. What we have here is a simple simulator with a lot of depth given its time. I'm too young to have played it back in the day but I'm glad I can finally try it now. My generation could learn that even with simple graphics and limited resources you can make a very immersive game that is a lot of fun. This is why game preservation is so important! Micropose did a good job, thumbs up.
Bomber 3 is more of a role playing game/simulation than anything else. The sound design is excellent and creates a real sense of immersion even though the graphics are dated. I played this a lot in the 90s - along with other Deadly Games classics like U-Boat and M4 - and I was thrilled to have a chance to play it again on a modern computer. I suspect it may be pretty hard for new players to get into, but I recommend giving it a try anyway. Well worth it once you get over the initial learning curve. Unfortunately, this version is full of bugs that weren't in the original. To name a few: - Your character is listed as a Captain in the log book at the start of the game when they should be a Lieutenant. The correct rank insignia is in the upper left corner of the screen and you are referred to as a Lieutenant elsewhere. - When a gunner shoots down a fighter it shows the correct animation but doesn't record the kill in the log book. - The bomb sight occasionally freezes, making it impossible to continue. - There are a variety of sound glitches, such as one where the sound of the bomb bay doors closing plays over and over until (for some reason) the throttle is pushed to full speed. Hoping the team that ported this will spend a little more time polishing it!
