Bro I really really really want to like this game. I love bloodrayne, the art style and comic aesthetic is awesome, and in theory a 2d side scrolling action game in the bloodrayne universe sounds amazing. The problem is a lot of bad game design choices make this game more frustrating than fun. Questionably placed check points send you back to tedious long fights with samey hordes you get to fight over and over again because shortly after you encounter a platforming area littered with insta kill mechanics. I spent more time mashing through the same squad of losers than i did anything else. Controls that literally fight you more than the enemies. The controls are clunky at best, which is crazy for a game that demands ABSOLUTE precision at all times, or you will accidentally breathe on the wrong thing and get insta killed. I promise you will lose more health by being one shotted by saw blades and acid more than any boss will ever deal to you. Backflipping is a perfect example of the scuffed controls, you have to force a slide and jump in the opposite direction, tho i swear whenever you are meant to use it they never give you proper space to do so. They also love to arbitrarily increase difficulty by just making things hard to see. it dosen't feel more challenging, it feels cheap. The game has some good meat on its bones, but i haven't been this angry with a game in a little while. i felt like i was stroking out playing it and i genuinely am impressed by my own patience by even completing the game. You know a game has some issues when after giving your all to beat it leaves you feeling empty instead of fufilled. I love bloodrayne, make a new 3d action game please. i feel like its the perfect time to bring this series back. i just feel really bad about this one. theres a lot to like, but even more to not like and sadly i will probably never play bloodrayne betrayal again. fresh bites was rebalanced to play better, god i cant imagine how the original played.
Bad controls, bad level design, difficult without being fun. Verdict: Avoid
This was quite miserable. It's the same bullshi controls as the original version, difficulty rebalance doesn't help when you still don't have responsive controls. The only new things you get here are: the return of Rayne's VA (and all the little dialogue this game has is now fully voiced while original game had zero voiceover), and a bunch of new achievements. That's about it really, the rest of the game is same as legacy version. It's almost like original's version budget was a couple of ramens given to a Wayforward C-team, while this version's budget just went to the paycheck for Laura Bailey.
This game is complete ass. I don't mind games being hard because they're challenging, but this piece of ♥♥♥♥ is just plain and simple designed to be as annoying as possible. Arbitary trap placement, pixel/frame perfect platforming, and you WILL get stun locked to death if you get hit even once in some areas. To top it all off there's an achievement that requires you to complete a level without getting hit, which is next to impossible with the sluggish controls and the fact that you can't cancel ANY animations. ♥♥♥♥ this game and the people who made it.
Just saying, but I do have a curator page. If you like my remarks about games, you can find more of them here: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44130985-TDP%27s-Gaming-Escapades
You know, I think some game franchises are actually cursed. No matter who you give the game to, someone or something appears out of nowhere to ensure the game ends up being very bad at worst or mediocre at best. For the longest time, I considered Bubsy to be one of the most notable franchises to fit this criteria, but I think now I can add BloodRayne to the mix as well. I started playing the games in this franchise a while ago. I found the first game to have a tedious gameplay and a very clunky combat system, thinking that a more hack & slash gameplay suits the series more. BloodRayne 2 showed me that the devs seem to have had the same thoughts, as the gameplay was changes to have more emphasis on fast-paced action. Unfortunately, this was not executed properly, resulting in the game becomes even worse and more boring than the first installment with a slow and impactless combat, and badly designed platforming sections. Then came BloodRayne Betrayal. I played the original version many years ago, and I remember being so infuriated by it that I quit before the second boss fight. The game was simply way too problematic, especially for a game made by Wayforward, screaming that there were definitely money or time constraints involved. I left that game behind for a long time, until now when I finally decided to check out the enhanced version. And I have to say...
This is the same flipping thing as the original!

The artstyle, artistic visual changes (such as everything becoming silhouettes) and some visual effects (such as screen shakes which you cannot disable) interfering with screen readability and making it a nightmare to notice where everyone/everything is?
The tutorials being some texts that appear at the bottom of the screen WHILE YOU ARE FIGHTING and vanish very fast, forcing you to read about them in a menu instead of properly teaching them?
The controls being very impecise for platforming because Rayne's movement is too slippery?
The actual platforming being very awkward and even infuriating due to hazards that come out of literally nowhere, medusa head equivalents flying around, getting juggled to death by spikes due to nonexistent invulnerability frames (like how it was in Sonic 1), and interactable hazards that do not respawn unless you deliberately kill Rayne or reload from checkpoint?
The combat feeling very weightless due to your attacks giving out no sense of impact?
Those sections where you have to quite literally play Flappy Bird?
The game reusing the same graphics, music and level design for an extended period of time and causing fatigue?
NONE OF THESE HAVE BEEN FIXED OR IMPROVED UPON. This "upgraded" version only improves the visuals, adds voice acting to the very few instances when characters talk and makes the difficulty more tolerable. That's it. The rest of it, is the exact same game we had before. And what we had before is honestly not something I would ever recommend to anyone. It's honestly not a fun game, and I don't see why you should bother with something that is branded as "entertainment" yet is not fun.
TL;DR
Barely upgraded. It only enhances graphics, adds a bit of voice acting and reduces the difficulty, while keeping all of the original's shortcomings intact, resulting in a game that is still not fun.
A complete shock and absolute disappointment this was made by Wayforward? The same Wayforward reknown for the amazing Shantae series?? Must have got handed to the junior dev team. Terrible sticky and sluggish controls that do not conform to the basic platformer standard. Blood Rayne moves like Blood Clot instead. Her backflip only works during 1 second pause in direction change, WTF is that mechanic? Level design devolves into getting gated by mobs of same enemies over and over again... Taito Double Dragon did that better in 1987. Only redeeming value here is the voice acting by award winning Laura Bailey and Troy Baker. This game is so 5hit, the best strategy is to speed run left to right or just not play it altogether. Avoid this "game" like the plague.
The game is really fun to play. Too bad it's dragged down by platformer sections that are too tedious, clunky, and irritating. The closer you get to the end, the more platformer-focused levels there are. The stupidest part of the platforming is jumping on enemies - you need to be absolutely precise when performing it. One mistake, and you're sent back to the checkpoint. Sometimes, you even need to clear enemies to try again. I really wanted to leave a negative review, but the better part of the game is just too good.
