Man this game is just not it. It's a shame because you rarely get to play as the monster in video games. I want to suck blood! It's awesome! This game, unfortunately, gets the very basics all wrong with ultra, ultra clunky controls. Rayne is just not fun to control which makes essentially every interaction, from combat to platforming (and really that's all there is) feel bad. Frustrating. The music is also like the buttest of butt metal. And I don't really think it changes? It just generically chugs. The graphics are really great, but sadly, that lends to the poor control feeling as it seems they're so obsessed with forcing these long animations to play out that you feel like you're dragging through sand. If you think I'm being hyperbolic, the achievement list says it all--less than 20% of players got a mandatory achievement for getting to, I think, level 5? The part where you play as a raven. Yeah. The vast majority of players dropped off before this. We deserve a better vampire game. So far the best I've played (I think) is Vampyr, but sadly that's more of a story-focused rpg than an action game.
This game isn't too bad although it picks up on difficulty and the later boss fights get overwhelming. It plays like a side scrolling hack n slash, has castlevania vibes with Laura Bailey as the one and only, Rayne. Other than the boss fights, there are parts in this game where you need to be careful where you land otherwise you fall to your death. If this was a side scroller from way back, you'd have no lives real quick in the later stages where you need to run from traps or hop over things to get further through a chapter, but there's unlimited lives so there's that. Now I just sit here waiting for a bloodrayne 3.

Shank.
Give this game a chance. It is INCREDIBLE Despite being 2D, the game has complex combat, with several possibilities for movement, combos, and shooting. Extremely fluid gameplay, once you learn to use the dash you become a demon with blades. The game was made to be challenging, and that’s what makes it so fun. Trust me, this game is unforgettable.
BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites is a remastered version of the 2011 cult side-scrolling action game BloodRayne Betrayal, developed by WayForward and re-released by Ziggurat Interactive. This updated edition seeks to reintroduce the dhampir Rayne to a new generation of players with upgraded visuals, rebalanced gameplay, and fully voiced dialogue featuring the original series cast. While the game retains much of what made it stylish and distinctive in its original release, Fresh Bites is still a polarizing experience—one that offers satisfying combat and moody aesthetics, but also brings along some of the frustrations that originally held it back from wider acclaim. The story follows Rayne, the half-vampire assassin known from the earlier BloodRayne games, as she infiltrates a mysterious underground fortress to confront a deadly threat tied to her own past. The narrative is light, delivered in quick cutscenes and character exchanges, but the addition of voice acting by Laura Bailey (Rayne) and Troy Baker brings a welcome layer of personality and energy to the otherwise sparse plot. It doesn’t attempt to be deeply cinematic or layered, but instead acts as a gothic backdrop to frame the relentless action. Fans of the original franchise will appreciate the continuity, but newcomers won’t feel lost, as the game focuses more on atmosphere and style than complex lore. Where BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites shines brightest is in its visual and artistic design. The hand-drawn 2D art style is rich with gothic flair, filled with grotesque monsters, twisted architecture, and a color palette of blood reds, deep shadows, and eerie greens. The animations are fluid, and Rayne herself moves with a brutal elegance that perfectly matches her vampiric nature. The remastered visuals look crisp and clean, with enhanced resolution and smoother performance that make the action easier to follow, especially in combat-heavy sections. It's a visually distinct experience that carries the unmistakable DNA of WayForward’s best 2D work. Combat is at the heart of the game, and it’s both stylish and punishing. Rayne uses her dual arm blades and firearms to tear through waves of supernatural enemies in fast-paced, combo-heavy fights. Players can launch enemies into the air, juggle them mid-combat, or dash through groups while dealing damage. There’s a visceral satisfaction in chaining together attacks and watching blood fly as Rayne feeds on weakened foes to recover health. The mechanics reward aggression and timing, and the controls feel snappy and precise—most of the time. However, combat is also where many of the game’s issues surface. Despite the improvements made in Fresh Bites, the difficulty curve remains steep and occasionally unfair. Enemies can swarm in chaotic patterns, sometimes hitting Rayne off-screen or interrupting combos with little warning. Environmental hazards, such as spike traps and rotating blades, are frequently unforgiving, and some platforming sections rely on pixel-perfect timing that can frustrate rather than challenge. The remaster does include some balance tweaks from the original version, but not enough to eliminate the moments of trial-and-error that can break the game’s momentum. One of the more welcome additions in Fresh Bites is the inclusion of multiple difficulty settings, allowing players to tone down the punishing aspects if they prefer a more accessible experience. The updated voice work also helps enhance immersion, making the game feel more like a complete package than its 2011 predecessor. Yet, even with these enhancements, the game still suffers from a few remnants of outdated design—such as lengthy level segments without checkpoints, or awkward camera angles that obscure hazards and enemies. These design choices, once a common element of older action-platformers, feel more frustrating today. The soundtrack deserves praise for its energetic, gothic rock-infused score that complements the game's visual style and pacing. The music builds tension and adds an extra layer of drama to boss fights and exploration. It helps carry the tone even when the gameplay occasionally stumbles, making the overall presentation of the game strong and consistent. Audio cues are also well-integrated into the combat system, giving subtle feedback for parries, hits, and enemy behavior. Ultimately, BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites is a game that wears its style proudly but still struggles with some of the same rough edges that limited its predecessor. It’s undeniably cool, with slick animation, fast combat, and a unique gothic tone that sets it apart from other 2D action titles. However, its high difficulty, inconsistent level design, and occasional technical oddities may frustrate players looking for a smoother or more modern experience. For fans of tough-as-nails action-platformers with strong visual direction and a flair for the macabre, Fresh Bites delivers a satisfying challenge and a dose of bloody nostalgia. It’s a remaster that preserves the original game’s strengths while doing just enough to make it more palatable for contemporary players—though not enough to redefine it. Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer intrigued by its aesthetic, BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites is worth playing, with the caveat that it demands patience and precision to truly appreciate what it has to offer. Rating: 7/10
