Bleeding Deities is a Hand Drawn 2D Action Platformer with an interesting story about a hero who ventures to save his siblings who were kidnapped by the Teot Tribe. The game features intense combat and platforming challenges that will keep you on your toes, the hand drawn animations are flawless and smooth. There are many secrets and puzzles to solve in each temple you visit, there's also an upgrade system for your set of armor to strengthen yourself and become even stronger. The music and soundtracks were very relaxing which creates a great gaming session and atmosphere. You gonna encounter formidable adrenaline rushing boss fights that will test your quick reactions and dodging speed. The art design of each boss was also amazing. If you love 2D Action Platformers, then this is a really good recommendation. Overall Rating 10/10
Bleeding Deities is not just a game—it’s a blood-pumping, soul-stirring epic carved straight from the obsidian heart of Mesoamerican mythology. This action-adventure masterpiece plunges you into a world where the gods walk among mortals, and the fate of existence hangs by a thread of jade and fire. I've really enjoyed the game mechanics and bosses as well. Its kinda like Blasphemous but with Mesoamerican mythology instead or catholic.
A Hidden Gem for Platformer Fans! Bleeding Deities is a hand-drawn 2D action platformer that blends old-school charm with modern gameplay. The combat is intense, the platforming is tight, and the boss fights are challenging but satisfying. I loved the smooth hand-drawn animations—especially the animated cutscenes that tell the story in such a beautiful way. With non-linear exploration, dark upgrade mechanics, and a relaxing yet immersive soundtrack, this game is a must-play for fans of classic action platformers. If you’re into retro-style games with a great atmosphere, deep lore, and fun mechanics, this one is totally worth your time! I’ll definitely keep playing it without a doubt!
The game is not overly long, took me roughly 6-6.5 hours to finish the story. So some might see this as being priced too high for a short completion time, but in that time it did take my full attention and I wanted to play more. It is not overly difficult which I think is a good thing, with so many games coming out that feel difficult for no reason, but there is no difficulty settings for those who want a higher or lower challenge. I don't think a lot of back tracking is necessary, depending on which order you do the areas and the upgrades you make. Am surprised and happy with the devs, fixing some game breaking bugs quickly. Would be good if there was an option to disable the obnoxious screen shake though, or reduce it. Also if you could go back to the other temples after the final chapter to clean up any missed items would also be good. In short though, I did enjoy my time playing it and wanted more.
81.2% of players dropped this before even getting 45 minutes in. The game feels pretty archaic and linear and is filled with kinda boring lever puzzles. It's an okay-ish linear platformer at best.
I really like metroidvania's having by now played well over a hundred so i'm always on the lookout for new ones. Even those that look less polished i often give a shot, as there's sometimes real gems found there. I'm also a big fan of mesoamerican settings and mythos which i feel like are very underused in gaming so a metroidvania in this setting? Sign me up, like i said there's always the chance it's gonna be a hidden gem. Unfortunately bleeding deities isn't a gem as it does so many things fundamentally wrong that it not only fails to be a good mv, it fails to be a good gamer alltogether. From clunky controls, frustrating combat, repetitive progression to even the simple things like QoL the game just doesn't have much going for it other than visuals and even those aren't all that impressive. From the getgo bleeding deities started off on the wrong foot, with an opening cutscene that kept going and going. I'm not a brainrotted millenial with no attention span but do you really have to add filler lines every other sentence in your opening cutscene? Better yet this exposition establishes that you are saving your brothers but not even a minute later it says you pick up your sister only to later on call them brothers again? Dunno if this is a translation issue, of which there are many in the game but it felt more deliberate? Anyways after this rather tumultuous opening you play a very basic tutorial level untill you suddenly mount a dragon and have a shoot em' up sequence? Like i said i had no idea where this game is going but it's a pretty standard story otherwise, with characters that are barely fleshed out. Anyways after this opening you are dropped into the hub village, a place where you can navigate a clunky UI to upgrade your gear. Oddly enough all your metroidvania movement upgrades are tied to this, and they're only used to pick up collectibles in the linear levels (more on that later). After the first level i used cheat engine to give myself enough currency to max out all this stuff, to avoid backtracking in this game as i wanted to keep my time with it as short as possible. You see after this hub came an entirely linear cave level until you arrive at the 'master's house'. I hoped that the game would open up here but it was immediately clear that you just use the teleporter here to travel to 5 different temples to collect pieces of some macguffin. So no sprawling interconnected nonlinear map for this mv, instead you get 5 almost exclusively linear levels that feel like recolours. To make matters worse each level follows the exact same formula, a first section with a frustrating time trial followed by a slightly bigger section with a puzzle, a miniboss and the main boss of that level. It's literally exactly that times 4 untill the final temple where you randomly get to fly the dragon again and beat the two final bosses. This formulaic, repetitive level design made the game monotenous which was made worse by the fact that platforming in this game sucks. The controls are awfull due to inconsistent coyote time and stuns on spikes which make you fall into one of numerous death pits this game loves. There's also instakill spike pits to make it even less fun, fortunately the checkpoint system is pretty generous. Same can't be said for the healing system whic in turn made combat feel worse. The game does the cardinal sin of using consumables to heal, consumables you find in the levels which makes it so you have to break every crate to keep stocked up as there's many things that might damage you including that other fun mechanic, contact damage... This game's combat is already off on a bad start with healing consumables and contact damage but everything else also feels super stiff. Enemy attacks are poorly telegraphed, have shoddy hitboxes and are just not fun. There's also like 20 enemy types at most throughout the game, none of which were fun to fight. Some of the bosses were alright but others sucked even more than the regular enemies. Combat as a whole is just not fun just like the platforming and movement. That's the sentiment when you actually control the game as there's plenty moments where that isn't the case. You get pulled off the controls all the time with those super cliché video game cutscenes that pan the camera to the door in the previous room as you pull a lever. This became so annoying as it was literally obvious which door it would be, every single time and they still insisted on showing it for 5 seconds. Same for picking up the aforementioned healing items, it opens a UI element you have to click out of EVERY SINGLE TIME. After a whille i also modded in a hundred pots so i could just stop having to grab these. In all fairness all the cheating i did probably did not give me a good indication of how the game is normally but i can bet you that i actually made it less unbearable. For if i had done it otherwise i might've quit earlier because of a feeling of wasting time. Despite all the annoyances the rest of the game is just very mediocre. The visuals for example are decent i guess but it's so copy paste and incoherent that the game doesn't actually look good. For example the 'mines' level has a large background PNG over the entire level which doesn't properly line up to the level layout. This made it hard to immerse myself into the game as this didn't feel like a real world but rather some sort of AI slop limbo. The music tried it's best to make the experience a little less bland but it was also a bit uninspired. At least it was better than the SFX which were atrocious, playing the exact same sound on every swing and whenever you were getting hit. This was especially noticable in the blood rituals you could do to save prisoners, which put you into another looooonnng animation where you couldn't control your character while hearing him grunt the EXACT same way 5 times in a row. They could have recorded a seperate voice line for this where the MC screams in pain but just reusing the SFX was chosen instead. Actually the whole game reuses so much stuff that it just becomes a homogenous blob without identity. It's not a fun game, it's just a game and one that doesn't work all that well might i add. For how poor it looked it took its sweet time to start up, even on an ssd there were comparitively long load times. There were also UI bugs, bugs with enemy AI and some fps drops. It could be that some of these were a result of cheat engine but i just think the game is poorly coded. It's also poorly made and doesn't have any real redeeming qualities. It's not the worst game ever that's frustrating beyond meassure but it does have some frustration. Most of all it's boring, mediocre and unremarkable, I hate to be so brutal with my words but it's true, i was bored the entire time :/
Super recomendado
Combat is fast and challenging, but satisfying. The controls feel tight and responsive. Exploration includes hidden areas and paths that hint at a deeper, interconnected world. The story feels rich from the beginning, and it’s clearly a passionate indie project inspired by Mayan culture. Definitely recommended for fans of Metroidvania-style games.
I ran into issues from the beginning, with it being difficult and inconsistent with skipping cutscenes or dialogue. Audio swapped between too quiet to hear (thankfully there was text/subtitles) and the music/sfx being incredibly loud. The camera moved a considerable amount, often swaying after players and rushing across the stage to whichever door had been opened which was a little nauseous. The cutscenes were long and in some gameplay sections unskipable, and gameplay had little indication of what was a checkpoint. Sometimes I'd almost finish a section only to be met with one of the many times the controls decide to disagree with my input and kill me in an insta-death pit (annoying in Blasphemous and annoying here too), only to drop me off arbitrarily at the beginning of the level. mid-bosses had little fanfare and since there is no indication of how you are supposed to heal or open up inventory in the tutorial I rammed my head against it. When I went to check for some way to use those herbal infusions I kept picking up I suddenly found that I could only exit the game, removing all my progress on the level and making me redo the mid-boss. On top of that, the controls are bound between the left and right side of the keyboard in positions that feel incredibly frustrating and gives joint fatigue even after a few minutes of continuous playing. I tried out a few of the worlds/tribes/whatnot and defeated a couple of mid-bosses, but consistently the timed trials irked me. Strange amounts of knockback, jump angles, enemy placement, and the ever-present spiky death floors made it an exercise in frustration. I have other metroidvanias that feel better and play better and I'd rather go back to those instead. Congrats on releasing a game, dev team, but it really didn't jive with me.
