Odd Dorable

What a cute experience!! I was gifted Odd Dorable by a super sweet friend who has a mutual appreciation for quirky and hand-drawn games. She thoughtully saw this as something I may enjoy, and she was spot-on! First of all, the developer has sold the game runtime a bit short. He lists it as a 30-60 minute experience, but it took me two hours (!) to 100% Odd Dorable, and that includes finding a very helpful YouTube walkthrough (see my below note for completionists) for the final few achievements which were puzzling me. :) So, value-for-dollar, I'd say this game is well worth it, between the world so delightfully handcrafted by a little girl and her father, the clever puzzles that had me scratching my chin, and the memorable experience I'll be telling people about for a long time to come. I'd place Odd Dorable in the "experimental" category as some other reviewers have noted. This is a game unlike anything else I've ever played. There's not any handholding, despite the childlike visuals. You are meant to wander, wonder, and explore this whimsical tiny world until you discover a little something here and there. I found myself smiling throughout the meandering miniature open world, feeling transported into delightfully simple and curious preschool doodles. There are tiny surprises hidden here and there. I really feel that this game is intended to evoke a simple "poke this and see what--if anything!--happens" sort of curiousity that we all have as children, and that it succeeds marvelously! The colors are reminiscent of the Candy Land board game, and especially wholesome knowing that an actual child drew each visual you see, and then a father lovingly stitched it all together into a comprehensive imaginary little world of wonder. The sounds are mostly soft, punctuated by silly songs and verbiage when bonking just the right characters here and there. The gameplay is entirely self-directed, so if you are easily frusterated by a lack of direction (contrasted with some simple trial-and-error alongside backtracking), keep this in mind. I'd recomend this for a cozy and low-key, no-pressure, take-your-time evening while watching a movie or listening to an audiobook. FOR COMPLETIONISTS: I noticed that--despite the 100% positive reviews at the time I'm writing--most people have not completed most achievements. This does speak to what I think is the obtuse nature of a handful of puzzles. There aren't any guides or really any help on Steam or Discord, but I'd like to recomend the YouTube video walkthrough I found by IndieJoshOfficial, entitled "Odd Dorable - Full Game (No Commentary)." He managed to complete a walkthrough in 30 minutes, and I found it immensely helpful to skim through his video and pick up my last few achievements. I played this on my laptop with keyboard and mouse controls, so I can't speak to how this handles on Deck, though I saw a discussion board post claiming that it is Deck compatible. This is a definite recomendation from me for anyone with a genuine appreciation for fully handcrafted experiences full of warmth, heart, and whimsy. :)

Odd Dorable feels less like a game and more like walking through a little world made of imagination everything looks hand-drawn in the sweetest way, and there’s something really special about knowing it comes from a child’s creativity it makes every corner feel personal and full of warmth exploring, solving simple puzzles, and helping collect candies is all very gentle and relaxed. it’s not about challenge, it’s about the feeling of being in this soft, playful world it’s simple, but it has a kind of quiet magic that’s hard to explain.

I fully support and endorse weird experimental games like this one. It's a silly little thing with no replay value or much to even begin with, but it's different, and that's cool. Shoutout to creativity.

this game is really cute i really like it, it feels really genuine this is a fun relaxing game i would say tho when the witch switch up your keyboard it would be nice it goes back to normal after a minute finishing the game hurt my fingers 😭
