very good game
Overall, the game is great, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend it if the "Miriam's Challenges" didn't exist. I swear I'd rather fight 10 bosses than go through another one of Miriam's challenges.
THIS GAME IS PEAK ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I HAVE PLAYED, CANT WAIT TO PLAY BLASPHEMOUS 2.
Allot of these reviews I think are overhyping this a bit. Is this a bad game? I don't think so, but with so many people calling this a mix of souls game with Metroidvania style gameplay I came with a certain expectation and I was rather disappointed with what I found. There's no denying that the art style, story, lore, and exploration are the standout in this game and honestly Games Kitchen deserves there flowers for the world they created and how they chose to display it. Its sad, depressing, and downright awful to look at. I'm a sucker for these worlds because I enjoy exploring them to see if there's anything that tops the last depressing thing you've seen in games like these. Honestly the biggest motivation for me to explore wasn't for a new upgrade for my character, but to rather see how they built a new area or even enemies. However there's allot of things that felt lackluster and downright boring to go through. The combat in Blasphemous is downright boring. I read allot of reviews on this before buying it and allot of people praised the combat when in reality its the same style of combat as all Metroidvania games but with a parry system this time. If you played a metroidvania game before than this is nothing new or engaging. This is even more apparent during the boss fights. I felt like majority of the boss fights I got through within my first try of meeting them. To me that kind of sucks because allot of them looked horrifying and whoever was in charge of character design in this game deserve a standing ovations, but the attacks were overly telegraphed and offered no motivation to try to learn there moves or what they do. Another annoyance I had with this game was just how much backtracking you have to do. It got to the point where it felt like a waste of time to upgrade your flask, rosary, or even health bar because how far out the way you had to go to make these upgrades. I think when I finished my first run I did it with 3 empty flask in my inventory, extra rosary upgrade, and two health upgrades I never ended up using because of how out of the way they were to go there. Could I have just used the fast travel system to go to these places? Sure, but you cant fast travel through shrines you have to go more out of your way to go to these "Gates of Travel" that are even more out of the way in order to go to an out of the way upgrade. Honestly I just said screw it since the combat isn't complicated or hard enough to warrant the excessive walking and platforming you have to do. Overall I wish steam had a neutral rating rather then a positive and negative rating. Is Blasphemous a bad game? No, but I don't think its a great game either. For $25 I would've been disappointed for what I got and wouldn't recommend it. There's plenty of better options out there, but since I got this over the summer sale for around $3 I'm fine with the experience I got and would recommend people to get it if its on discount. But since its back at $25 just skip it and wait for another sale.
