It has its own visual style, but gameplay often feels far too similar to ignore the comparison. The game’s combat system has numerous flaws that make it feel like a cheap knockoff of Demon/Dark Souls. Oftentimes attacks will hit an enemy visually, but deal no damage, presumably because of unrefined hit-boxes. Occasionally, you will press a button but the game won’t register it. These types of bugs are inexcusable in a game modeled after Dark Souls, especially because of the difficulty. Blade & Bones even takes it a step further than Dark Souls and implements a permadeath system. Rather than dropping your souls on death, like Dark Souls, you lose a life. You have a finite amount of lives, but after losing one, it is hidden in a random place for you to find. In theory, I like this concept and it could have been an interesting deviation from the Souls-like formula. Unfortunately, the large amount of bugs cause you to die at least a handful of times, no matter how well or how carefully you play the game. It also borrows the Dark Souls healing system, in which you get a few health potions, but can only get more by resting at a checkpoint. Story-wise, Blade & Bones is fairly sparse, with most of the storytelling coming from a handful of NPCs. There isn’t much of the plot that is explicitly told to you, you are instead forced to piece the story together from the small snippets of dialogue you hear. This is fine in a game that is focused on gameplay, but due to the unsatisfying combat, it becomes quite noticeable that there is a severe lack of content. Visually, the game looks unique and quite good for an indie game. There is a distinctive art style that looks fantastic when paired with the game’s color palette. It is easily the highlight of the game for me, and goes to show that even graphics that aren’t impressive in a technical sense can still be beautiful when executed with a consistent and polished theme. Blade & Bones is a good game buried underneath a mountain of bugs and unpolished features. This is the type of indie game that would have benefited greatly from a publisher willing to throw some money at the game to give it a longer development cycle and allow the developers to enhance the weaker aspects of Blade & Bones. As it stands now, this is a game with a lot of wasted potential that isn’t worth playing unless you don’t mind buggy combat and want to play an indie version of Dark Souls. 3/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
https://youtu.be/0sREqsJW-5s Starting from an unclear set of goals or premise the light combat and open world design feels far to sparce to generate motivations for player goals for play.
I want to like this game. The landscape is varied, the day/night cycle is fresh and the lore is intriguing. But the combat is awful. You can swing at an enemy and miss despite your blade cutting through their body. They can attack you and miss you by a whole arm's length and still land a hit. This might not be a problem, if not for the fact that the combat is fundamental to the game. You have seven lives, and when you run out, your save is deleted. Blade and Bones severely punishes you for its lackluster combat, which is honestly disappointing, considering how much potential this game had otherwise.
I'm here to go against the grain - I wouldn't say this is bad. I might even reccomend this to a certain kind of person - By far, it's not GOOD. it's not super well designed, with interesting mechanics, or a real sense of story - but it is fun to explore the world. If it ever goes on sale, or you have 10 bucks burning a hole in your pocket and you like overly vague experiences and you want to see whats in this, then i'd say go for it. It's not a gem - it's not even a stone. It's a piece of coal that someone put a sticker on. Some people can find a use for it, and if your artistically inclined enough you can enjoy this sticker. It's not as bad as everything else in my steam library that's mostly negative - What's here is complete. The game is done. There ARE mechanics, and there is something here to have fun with, even if not many people will like it. I wouldn't exactly call it a metroidvania - and it's combat isn't anything to write home about, and it's slightly too difficult to really enjoy the other aspects of it.
Like all reviews, this is an unpolished mess. Additionally, it's dark souls with 7 lives, which is just not a good idea.
This game isn't perfect but there was clearly a lot of ideas behind it and the mechanics and exploration are very impressive. I wouldn't recommend this game at full price but on a sale, yeah grab it. Just don't go into this game with expectations of Dark Souls because not all developers have a couple hundred grand to spend. A damn good effort went into this and it deserves some love. I just wish they polished the combat system a bit before abandoning the game, it would have made all the difference. EDIT: Even after recommending this game previously, I feel I still didn't give it the credit it deserves. The lore is all there if that's what you're into, the boss fights are clever, the secrets are great and genuinely rewarding. And mechanics that are completely unique. Great game
.
