A great little experience, you can tell it was made by some people who love history and who want truer stories to prevail. Lots of little details that really make the setting feel authentic. Gameplay was pretty minimal, basically a point-and-click walking simulator, and I wish the final mystery didn't just give you all the answers -- there's plenty of hints so it would hardly be difficult to figure out where you need to go to find the information you need. Maybe the main character could speak up if you got stuck for a long time or something. Still, overall I really enjoyed it, does a great chance of capturing an authentic feel for both the modern "history site" setting and the fictional historical writings.
Great concept, but very slowly paced. The mystery didn't start to unfold until a couple hours into gameplay, preceeded by two mandatory tours the main character needed to complete. The trailer made this look like a detective thriller, but a vast majority of the game was slow. The ending wasn't satisfying, either. I love the idea and what the story achieved overall. I think the darker side of the museum's history could've been explored more, the historical tasks could've been cut much shorter (or cut up with more drama of the mystery), and the ending could've resolved in a more satisfying way. As a museum and historical house lover (who lives in the south and has visited many plantations), I enjoyed the educational aspects and the exploration of the space. The house was not nearly as big as the tour was implying it was and the design of the ruins were boring. There were other glitchy/clunky mechanics that were irritating, such as things freezing, needing to click on some things three times before initiating the interaction, the character "running" being very slow, and others. The voice acting was not done well, either, which took away from the story. I appreciate that this game was free and clearly the team put a lot of effort into creating it, though.
This game is decent enough as a walking simulator. The protagonist is fairly annoying, she always has to say a one-liner after everything, and most of her quips are bland and dull. I think the narrative is interesting, although the "family hides racist past" is a little cliche, especially since it's made obvious by the protagonist's own monologues. But the game is free, and so I can't complain too much. It is a bit sad that this studio stopped producing more games, it would have been interesting to see the mansion in its original state.
I was frustrated by this game. It had a strong plotline, an engaging protagonist depicted with good voice acting, and a different and really interesting background, but the mechanics were awkward enough to waste all that. For example, I don't know why scanning the documents in the archive needed anything more than than a simple escape/click on the scanner to move the protagonist on to the next document. I doubt this was an attempt to depict the work of "real" archiving; I've scanned documents to archive and there was nothing in the game's pseudo-difficulties resembling that. Also, I did understand the game's warning about carefully reading documents the first time, so the twentieth time I got that same message because of the game's mechanical fussiness was really off-putting. As a visual novel, this would have been very good at the very best price: a big thumb's up. But, the frustrations of unneeded, rough and ready, point and click mechanisms turned a strong recommendation into a game I can't recommend.
What an amazing little game! To be honest this was supposed to just be a little throw-away free to play game that I worked through while watching youtube but pretty soon I was pausing my video and totally ingrossed in the story! I would have loved to see more work from these developers but it seems they've disappeared leaving behind the promise of continuing the Blackhaven story in a sequel "Cassius"; it seems we may never get to experience this though. But anyway, definitely think this is worth playing through, it's free to play you have literally nothing to lose and you might just have a good time! ✨Would Appreciate If You Followed My Curator Page✨
Having just completed this, I can say that this is worth a playthrough. Especially for an American audience this is an important and huge part of our history that is currently (and as we see, historically) buried from general view. This is more of an experience that you can take with you on your next museum or historical site visit. The use of present day microaggressions toward the main character were not only realistic, it served as a foil to the experiences we uncover throughout the game. It's free, and it's a great (albeit heart-wrenching at moments) reminder to not take written history at face value. I'm looking forward to the dev's next game.
This was absolutely awesome, and it opened my eyes a bit. Let's just say I don't identify so much with the protagonist - but in this case that was a good thing. COming away from this, I feel an honest desire to stop and take a look at history a bit more. It's always written by the winners and the ones in charge - the rest is hidden away. Sometimes a game really gets to me -- that was this game for me. Thank you devs for writing this. I may not have enjoyed it as much as I wanted to, but the reason was because it hit too close to home. My grandmother was a white woman born in the 1920s, and her attitudes were far too close to some depicted in ths game. All I can do is strive to do better. <3 Much love to people like the protagonist who struggle with things beyond their control. Let's make the world better.
Well thought out! I wish more museums had something like this. Educational, but with a nice story.
Pretty nice game. Not very hard, but with an interesting story
