When I was playing this game, I struggled to think of how to describe it. Now, I think it's most akin to unraveling. Gaslighting, but in the true sense of the word. Reflecting the protagonist's sanity falling apart, the background music will begin to take on static to the point that you will think it's been like that the entire time. It's lo-fi, right? Sometimes they add a bit of static for flavor, right? Then the stuttering starts. The missed notes like a record skipping a groove. The story doesn't help. Your character experiences time travel and loops both as a result of his own actions, as well as your own save scumming. Once, when I was messing around with common route options to try and land on a certain character's route, I picked an option that I normally didn't. The game explicitly told me that that wasn't how it went. My character then proceeded to black out for several frames until the game righted itself. Another time, a scene that was familiar to me played out differently: the paper snowflake the protagonist folds and cuts instead blooms into fractal chaos, consuming everything, until the game righted itself once more. Further, on a meta level, the entire point of the story is to achieve immortality. Or is it? It seems as though every story written about humans achieving immortality is actually about why trying to do so is a fool's errand. Black Heaven is no different. There is a hunger, a certain gnawing at the edges of every living being, but some measure of growth and happiness can only be gained when that hunger is shed. It's left me with a lot to think about, which I find increasingly rare in visual novels. Able to achieve a perfect blend between its horror, philosophy, romance, and even sex, I think there's a little bit of something for everyone in Black Heaven. Give it a shot! It was inspired by DDLC, if that helps your decision-making. Oh, by the way, the button to hide the text box is the mouse wheel. Also, there isn't a CG menu, which is a bit weird, since there are definitely CGs in this game. Take screenshots if you want to keep those!
Holy smokes! im first! good game btw!!! Just finished it. wow.
It's a pretty good hidden gem it's not the best thing out there but it has a good story and all the characters are solidly written. I Wish it had voice acting and more CG's and I feel like they could have improved it by adding more sound effects especially in the Horror scenes But overall solid read. highly recommend if you have $10 to spare
One of the best visual novels I've played. After I purchased Black Heaven, my plan was to play for about 30 minutes - just to get a feel for the game - then return to the RPG I'd been playing previously. But once I started Black Heaven, it was like beginning a great book that I just couldn't set down. And when I finished the first playthrough, I had to play again to see other endings for other characters. I purchased the game on sale, but it is worth buying at full price. Intricately woven story with engaging characters. Choices really do direct the narrative. Humor and sorrow. If you enjoy well-crafted storytelling, this game is definitely worth your time.
Fun little dating game. Wooh second reviewer
I don't wanna spoil anything and it's clear why the store page doesn't give away too much of the story. It's longer and more detailed and fleshed out than you expect. I strongly recommend Black Heaven, although I realize it's not a very convincing recommendation with so little information. If the premise seems interesting, I promise it's even better once you get into it and well worth it.
Follow Far2close - Visual Novel Playthroughs Curator Page
Black Heaven: A Necromantic Dating Sim Developer: Occult Triangle Lab Publisher: Occult Triangle Lab
Intro:
A lethal plague has destroyed humanity, leaving behind barren wastelands and empty cities that roam with ghosts. You find yourself in the Library of Gizaron wading in and out of consciousness. As you awake, you find your organs being removed from your very eyes by a thin man with a metal mask that shows his toothy smile. He searches for the information for physiomancy and he needs your help to get that knowledge. You must give him the souls of three classmates that excelled in three different subjects, in return, you can forever live in happy memories.
Pros:
1. The story is extremely well written and the world is detailed wonderfully. I enjoyed how manipulative arts such as physiomancy are commonplace where elite schools offer them, or constant mention of immortal scholars. Information like this is crucial to build the world, especially something so far from reality. The back and forth between Uzo traveling ruins in current time to flashbacks of good times is done well to not only show the timespan, but also how things were before disaster struck. I also like the use of time and how heavily important it is not only for the current Uzo, but for past and future. 2. The characters are great with their backgrounds, struggles, and redemptions being a rollercoaster of emotions. Ru is wholesome and bright, but is trying to be a better adult to gain the respect she lost. Lyse is manipulative and surrounds herself with people that she exploits and disposes of, saving her true self for real friends. Izagi wants a different path than what her parents desire, and her strong desire for that affects how she is around people. I will use Izagi Ito as an example: her family wanted her to be the typical rich elite daughter. They wanted her to be sophisticated, but she wants to do martial arts. It's violent and bloody, unfitting for the vision of an elegant daughter. Izagi desires perfection in order to be what she wants to be, however it holds her back socially. She is seen as a hard ass. She has been so focused on herself that she doesn't have many friends nor has no lick of romance. I also enjoy how Uzo applies himself to each of the girls. For Izagi, Uzo tries to be at peace with himself. No need for unnecessary actions such as his fight with Tenza, where he went against.
I also enjoyed Uzo. When you get the end of a route, it becomes apparent that you and No Eyes are similar. While No Eyes is not a route, he does add more information if you choose options favored for him, which reveals that No Eyes is you. He wants to see if you'd stay selfish or do the right thing. If you fail, he tries again. No Eyes is the Uzo that is unhappy with his decisions and wants to see if an alternate him is ill fated to make the same choices to downfall. This is where the lotus gambit is so important. You make the same lines but there is a chance for improvement or the same mistakes.
3. I enjoyed the mini game of Seeker, each girl has their set of moves that fit in with their personality along with winning or losing brings a slightly different dialogue. I also like the use of saves fitting in with the story (Chronomancy). If you go a pure playthrough, you'd probably have a decent time. If you go back on saves you've done before, you get Fractal Madness, the music becomes distorted and scenes become crazy such as skin falling off the muscle or eating bloody organs. 4. The character art by Linnea Kataja is great with the characters having a few outfits and slight variations of pose. The environment art by Lim Chin Yang is excellent showing the ashy remnants of what used to be Itzon, to the peaceful times of life. The intimate art by Motto is wonderful and rather than showing the raw sex between Uzo and his choice of girl, it feels much more affectionate and sensual. 5. The music by Marek Domagla is amazing. I enjoy the three stages of Fractal Madness tracks for each girl. I love how Ru's theme involves a piano and gives a wonderous feeling. Izagi's track is sophisticated involving a violin like how her parents wanted her to do, but with a punchy beat to show her defiance. Lyse's theme is jazzy and carefree. The Love track is slow and seductive, it's like shedding your lovers clothes. My favorite track is the Reunion, it's a turning point for everyone. A life without destruction. Excellent work from Marek.
Cons:
1. My main sadness is that I wish this got more funding in its Kickstarter. The writing is great and the CG art it DOES possess fits perfectly, but I do wish it got more funding as I think more CG art for the horror scenes and Fractal Madness segments would've enhanced the experience greatly. Even more CG art for calmer scenes would be definitely welcomed as well. 2. I guess I can't really call it a dating simulator?
In the story, it is essential that Uzo cheats. You have no choice in that.
I think it's more just a standard romance visual novel, as the choices are linear than a huge multiple branching path. 3 I would like an art gallery as the art is wonderful to look at.
Conclusion:
Great writing with wonderful characters, environments, and horror. I do yearn for more CG art as that would've heavily enhanced the experience, especially with the excellent detailing of the gory scenes. Score: 7/10 GOOD
So far this game has me enthralled. Absolutely love the character designs. Definitely know who I’m going after ☺️
I haven't finished yet but, this game has great music, good art, and one of THE most unique story lines I've ever seen. The writing is immaculate and the concepts are so interesting. I can't say more without spoilers but DEFINITELY try this game!!
