Black Chapter is an incredibly fun pixel-art horror RPG. It starts out with a class field trip that goes wrong. Students are locked inside a cathedral and unfortunate events begin to happen. The gameplay is enjoyable, it's a mix of solving puzzles and investigating what's happening as you get through the story. Has an overall dark atmosphere and great soundtracks, definitely had a few jump-scares during my playthrough. The ending was interesting too, has multiples ones. Overall I'd recommend this game, was a fun one!
I enjoyed this game quite a lot. It starts with the characters visiting a cathedral and exploring it but the game quickly gets darker. Gameplay get's really fun once you enter the first major area. The atmosphere is dark and eerie, with a good amount of jump-scares and a great soundtrack. It was an engaging story, I was always looking forward to what would happen next. You're basically trying to figure out how to escape the cathedral while solving puzzles and going through investigations along the way. The game wasn't too easy but it wasn't that hard either, I think it's a good balance. Loved the art too. I can recommend it, game's really good!
Really fun game, clever puzzles without being frustrating or way too easy (looking at you skyrim) a whodunit kind of plot with Phoenix Wright/Danganroppa style interludes in between puzzle sections, did scare me quite a few times and the overwall plot of what happened in the monastery in the past and how it relates to what is happening now i really enjoyed. Its Fairly short ate around 2:30ish hours depending on how well you do with the puzzles but its well made,no boring padding and barely any backtracking trough previous areas, maps feel cleverly designed with its connection to previously visited areas trough new entrances,it is a simple game but a very well made one, highly recommend
This game is actually a little gem. When Evan and his classmates visit the famous Durhal Cathedral, they get locked in and have to find a way to get out. But after some mysterious events, things get bad very fast. It took me about 4 hours to finish the game with all endings, but it's possible to finish in about 2 or 3 hours, depending on one's playstyle. Black Chapter contains some very good jump scares and chasing scenes, as well as some minor detective mechanics, which I enjoyed very much. It's possible to save at the end of the game to get all of the different endings, so there's no need to replay the game every time just to get a different ending. Another thing to point out, the developers were very friendly and responsive in the forums. Black Chapter is not an RPG maker game, but made in Unity, for anyone who cares about this. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys games like the "Strange Men" series.
Just go for it, really, it teases you till the very end, and then... TEASES MORE
First off I want to throw a shoutout to Reiscent on 9GAG. Without them I wouldn't have been here in the first place. Secondly I really enjoyed this game and it was fun to say the least. Some cheap jump scares added in with some really well timed ones had me not trusting a damn thing in this game. The story was nice and had me involved and wanting to keep going. I was even challenged at a few stages of the game. Thanks again friend! I look forward to what you guys and gals at Spire Studio put out and will definitely check out your other works!
The writing is cringey weeb garbage (I say this as a total weeb myself). You're in a prestigious British high school that just spontaneously has an American, two Japanese, and a Korean out of an 8 person class. Three of the five girls instantly want your D before you're out of the first cutscene, and one of the girls is actually a trap cosplayer who insists everyone call her "Surprise-chan". One of the guy characters also constantly and cringily talks about how perfect Japanese girls are. The actual writing is also very bland and nondescriptive, with no real differences between how any of the characters talk. But the part that made me quit was a section where you literally walk down a hall, hear some scraping, then start walking back and get instakilled with no warning. The game does not have autosave, so that death sent me back 30 minutes to the last time I saved (as there is zero danger in the first segment of the game) and killed all desire I had to continue. It's just not a very good game, it clearly is the dev's first effort at game making but that doesn't excuse it IMO. They really need to hire someone else to do the writing for them.
This game is extremely fun! It has well thought out puzzles, engaging story, all the characters have their own unique personalities which makes it entertaining (fan of the art too~), and not to mention just when you least expect it, something else surprises you from out of nowhere (Or kills you, in my case!). 2.4 hours in, I really can't wait to see what happens in the end! :3 would recommend 10/10!
I'm just 4 hours in the game and I have to say I LOVED IT. The effort and love the development team put here is clearly visible. The story is great, so are the characters. The game has 4 endings (1 being the true ending) but I'm yet to unlock it. I bought the full version with the art and the soundtrack because I want to support them fully. The game is very good but BEWARE of the jumpscares! The game IS SCARY!
First of all, this game was gifted to me by a friend. Also there are going to be mild spoilers in this review. Story: The story was very interesting, the religious and historical texts were very interesting and the setting seemed very good. The connection between the historical context and the modern one was a bit far fetched, but overall it was alright. 3/5 Art: The art is held in an anime style. Its not always clean (eyes) but it sure has very fleshed out plot. Overall clean and good 4/5 Atmosphere: One of the most important things, for 2d horror rpg is the atmosphere and feeling of suspense it creates. The game had mostly jumpscares, but also created a tense atmosphere especially in the crypt section, where i felt i was genuinely being chased and needed to hide. This kind of mechanic is new to me, when it comes to 2d horror rpgs, i mostly know that feeling from games like "Outlast" or "Amnesia the dark descent". In my opinion it was a good mix. 5/5 Gameplay: The mechanics are very clunky. There were some glitches when you walked against or stood near objects. The controls are unlike other games of this genre and in my opinion there were some parts, where there couldve been more save spots. Going into the menu, without a "Back" button made me accidently turn out my candle a lot, which was annoying. The game never crashed tho and never lagged so performance-wise it was alright. 3/5 Overall: 4/5 Suggestions: - The plural of Succubus is Succubi not Succubuses (-us -i -o -um -o, -i -orum -is -os -is) - Option menu, where you can change volume, text speed and so on - Possibility to skip intro - Art review menu (for the plot) - Info how many endings one unlocked Post scriptum: Overall you did a good job, i really enjoyed the game and am thankful for my friend to have gifted it to me. I play a lot of 2d horror rpg and this one was definitely enjoyable. 5/5 would recommend. Thank you for your effort! Cant wait to see what else you guys got in store.
