Usually visual novels fall into one of two categories: choice filled and kinetic. Choice filled is obviously with branching stories while kinetic have no choices and are totally linear. Bios Ex is kind of in the middle. It has fewer choices than many visual novels but the ones it does have are ones with a big impact and implications. I thought I was going to dislike this setup as I am used to having more freedom with the story but I ended up liking it. The story was very interesting and I liked how dark it ended up becoming in my play through. The art was well done and had a good style. The music was great at setting the pace and mood of the story. I enjoyed the characters and enjoyed learning more about them and seeing where they would go to next. I played Bios Ex on Linux. It did have an issue where the game would crash on launch through Steam but would launch if I manually ran the executable in the game folder outside of Steam. The developer responded quickly to this and was able to get it fixed in about a week while keeping me in the loop and having me test out new possible fixes. Overall the game launches fine through Steam now and it showed me the developer cares about fixing their game. The game uses the Ren’Py engine and the OpenGL API. You can save whenever you want and there are 54 save slots to use. The game does open on the wrong monitor but that is a bug with the Ren’Py engine not the game. Alt-Tab didn’t work. Disk Space Used: 801 MB GPU Usage: 0-17 % VRAM Usage: 525-616 MB CPU Usage: 1-5 % RAM Usage: 2.2-2.6 GB Overall this is a solid visual novel. There is a good story to explore; great art on display and a good soundtrack. I finished my first play through in 2 hours and 27 minutes. I paid €20 for the game through Kickstarter and I felt that was a fair price. Considering the retail version costs less I would say you should at least check out the demo if you enjoy the genre.

Bios Ex
This Visual Novel is a mystery about a man who was put inside a asylum for reasons he forgot with many questions and big boob women! I have a hard time recommending this visual novel, the story for some reason does not grab my interest. The "mystery" failed to intrigue me in any way. You could call some parts of the plot generic but even generic plots can feel interesting with good characters. Unfortunately, I don't care about any of the characters at all. There is a lot of story that feels rushed to me and suspense could have been built up more. The art also is not the greatest, the boob size and shape is unnatural which bothered me the most. I wouldn't recommended this game at a $9.99 if want a harem mystery VN you can find better cheaper ones on steam for the same length. This is boring for a mystery visual novel and the writing has failed to grab my interest and I have lost all motivation to finish reading even with how short this is. Wearing its influences on its sleeve, Gogen Soft’s psychological thriller, is an ode to the visual novel scene of the ‘90s - and more than a fine read. Sure, it won’t win any awards for its original, long, multi-branching story, or high replayability, yet Bios Ex - Yami no Wakusei’s strong atmosphere, well-written characters, and great writing, manage to save the day. Oh, and there’s a lady with a mighty impressive décolleté here. What’s there not to like?!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2087356277

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2087356312

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2087356344

Bios Ex-Yami no Wakusei(Bios Ex-

Genre
Eine Visual Novel
Story
+ Gute Story + Spannend + Sympathische Charaktere + Gute Musik + Netter Art Style + Achievements
Fazit
When you start the game you are in jail and they are taking you to a psychiatric hospital. Everybody thinks you are the one behind a terrorist attack, but you don't remember anything. You spend days and nights trying to recover your memories and worrying you really are the one responsibile for the terrorist attack but hoping not. There's a fight within you, a voice telling you are the one behind the terrorist attack, and another voice telling you were framed ...but why? Enjoy this Visual Novel unveiling a mistery through many plot twists.
A young man with no memories apart from nightmares of destruction finds himself transferred from prison to a madhouse. However, he's confident that he's not a lunatic nor a terrorist – he's determined to get to the bottom of the conspiracy against him.
I liked...

The retro style (the game is presented in modern widescreen, but otherwise feels like something from 90's Japan in terms of story, music, character design, etc.)

I didn't care for...

The story (for a mystery thriller, I wasn't feeling much intrigue or tension; at multiple points I was wondering whether I'd finish it)
The super-sized chests of female characters

Verdict
I'm hesitant to recommend Bios Ex after finishing the game. It's obvious that it's a labour of love on a tight budget, and the end result does look and feel like the untranslated Japanese VN you've never heard of but chanced upon on VNDB. And like it, it doesn't seem to have the spark that turned a few of such games into cult classics that are still being played decades later. Does that make it a bad game? Not really. Is it the right game for you? You be the judge. This will be a very mixed review, in my opinion the game offers great potential but the execution is lacking in several areas. I can only recommend to buy this with a high discount! Pros: - the overall aesthetic, I love the retro vibes, also the art! - the soundtrack is WONDERFUL - the plot idea: the story went into a very different direction than I initially expected, which I actually enjoyed a lot! I think the idea is very creative and I was invested in the mystery Cons: - the game feels... quite incomplete altogether - in my opinion the amount of CGs could've had more variety, considering that (especially towards the end) there had been so many opportunities to include more illustrations - to me, the game often struggles to achieve a thrilling atmosphere, e.g. there are many BRUTAL scenes that were supposed to feel intense and grotesque but due to barely having any changes in the music or extra sound effects, combined with the lack of illustrations, they feel rather flat. Those scenes would've been insane with some sound and visual effects. - despite it being an interesting story, its writing feels quite superficial and certain characters feel rather one-dimensional - the length: the plot is quite complex but the short gameplay makes it feel very rushed. I believe that the story would've been way more impactful if the writing included more depth and details, especially since there's a lot of important information that only gets briefly mentioned. Overall I definitely did enjoy it, but mainly for what the game COULD have been. I really like the concept but the production and writing rather feel like a draft instead of the finished product.
