Beyond: Two Souls

Playing Beyond: Two Souls for the first time, I chose the remixed chronological order, which really helped me appreciate the incredible cinematic highs this game has to offer. The absolute standout here is the acting; Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe deliver fantastic, emotionally gripping performances that genuinely make you care about Jodie’s lifelong struggle. Visually, the game is gorgeous, and the core gameplay loop of swapping between Jodie and her supernatural entity, Aiden, is actually a lot of fun. Using Aiden to float through walls, manipulate objects, or wreak havoc on enemies provides a highly unique twist on the interactive drama formula, creating some truly spectacular, action-packed set pieces that keep the gameplay engaging. However, the game definitely stumbles when it comes to narrative cohesion and player agency. Even in the remixed order, the pacing feels disjointed, bouncing wildly from grounded teenage drama to over-the-top CIA espionage. More importantly, when compared to Quantic Dream’s other interactive thrillers, both Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human are way better than this one, primarily because they actually make your choices feel like they carry massive, life-altering weight. Beyond: Two Souls, by contrast, offers a much weaker illusion of choice, making you feel more like a passenger along for a predetermined sci-fi ride. Despite lacking meaningful branching paths, the stellar acting, unique mechanics, and strong presentation still make it a highly polished experience well worth your time.
