Stare into the abyss
Beyond Crimson Stars is set in a futuristic Sci-Fi setting, where in the year 2072 a nameless protagonist is left picking up the pieces after his father's suicide. With the help of technology ("interactive brain maps") he delves into the mind of the recently deceased. While his damaged brain (presumably due to the way of his death) will most likely disrupt the procedure, the protagonist needs to give it a try nonetheless. This is his last chance to get closure. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3376835616 The game consists of four different parts/memories and an ending section. Each one allows the protagonist to take a peek into a distorted memory, which in turn leads into some cryptic thoughts about his father. The graphics can be a bit hard on the eyes at times with all the visual noise going on, but the enviroment tells a story of decay so it makes sense to be rendered in such strenuous way. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3376834796
The abyss stares back
Surreal visuals and a chaotic cluster of sounds sing a dissonant choir as the last electrical impulses at his father's brain synapses die out. The game certainly doesn't pull any punches: it's a visceral experience. One that left me distraught, bewildered and emotional, like a tug at the heartstrings, performed with the most sudden and violent move. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3376833686
This is now an epic staredown
The heartfelt ending made it worthwhile to endure whatever difficulties may arise when one traverses the mindscape of a dead man. This is a hard recommendation, give it a try. Hint: don't press Esc unless you want to exit the game, Beyond Crimson Stars was designed to be played in one sitting and it lasts about an hour. I love a good blend of comedy and tragedy. This was an interesting spiritual journey, heightened by cool visuals and Negative XP's music. Navigation in the game is occasionally frustrating, but the game is short so it's whatever. For $1, see if this is for you.
This must be one of the best naration, music and sound design i ever listened to in a game truly exceptional! What a trip but sadly it took me back to a a very sad time when i lost my father a few years ago. I can't recommend this enough if you like walking simulators with a great dark but funny at times narrative and unsettling dream like spaces.
A crazy well voiced walking sim. Hits surprisingly hard if you're open to the concepts presented in the game. A quintessential indie game experience, if you're into abstract & wild indie games, this one will certainly resonate with you. Be aware there's some extremely dark subjects in this that will screw with you if you're not in the right headspace. Really surprised that I did not hear about this until just now and hope there's more from the developer.
Incredibly moving, I was caught off guard by how hard this game hit me.
I love this game. it reminded me how to feel at a time when I really needed it

If I am going to be honest, I don't even know what to say for the review. You explore the broken mind of a father who shot himself and with that, you see dark thoughts and memories he had as a child. I really wished there was a soundtrack or something of the synth-wave music in the game but, the use of Alan's old music like "I Hate Myself (And Everybody Else)" and "What Do I Have To Do" gave some feeling of hopelessness. I don't know Shooter that well but I know he wrote songs like this as a way to vent. Showing how the son grieved too hit pretty close, as I lost people close to me, and being able to relate to acting out is a familiar but sad feeling. Toward the end, the user is given two doors to walk through, and in that transition to those two doors the music was really nice, and the narration of the father talking to the son (or what I think is) with all of the memories flashing around him made me reminiscent about when I was little. The visuals were appealing, the dark humor is a nice touch, and seeing how the dark humor was represented in certain cases with these stories written by the AI just showed some sort of coping mechanism by the son. I've never really played games that hit close, but I've watched movies that had some relation too but I think this game tops it off. Maybe it's due to some circumstances I went through or I'm just reading into it too deeply, but this walking sim glued me to the screen. I guess a lot of experiences people have when they play this game vary, but playing this and having some familiarity with what happened in this game and in my own life is mind-boggling. I highly recommend this game, it's a beautiful work, and one I have a lot of respect for.
