Beyond a Steel Sky is the second game in the "Steel Sky" series. The first one is Beneath a Steel Sky. It's actually free-to-play here on Steam so I recommend checking it out first. While it's not required to understand Beyond's story, it enhanced my experience as this game referenced it a bit and there was also one returning side character from Beneath (it's
Danielle Piermont
. Now, about Beyond. I liked the art style and the world design is so cool. It was nice seeing the LINC space in 3D. And I just really enjoy a vibrant sci-fi world. It was mostly the characters that carried this game for me though. Most of them are very quirky and while I can see it being a hit-or-miss, it worked well on me. I just found them really fun to talk to, especially Joey. The story itself is... fine. I didn't really care about finding the child, but I was interested in Union City itself. Unfortunately, I can't say that I enjoyed the gameplay that much. The puzzles were just boring. They were easy to solve and I didn't really enjoy the "hacking" puzzles (which I think made up the majority of this game's puzzles, but I could be wrong). The hacking was basically you scanning objects and then swapping their module effects. There's not much to it beyond that. It also fell off near the end. I didn't enjoy the final sequence and I hated the ending. I hope they make a third game at some point. I really want to know
what happens to Union City
and (MAJOR SPOILERS)
I just want Joey to be fixed. I really don't get why they had to kill him in the end
. Either way, I still loved this game. 8/10. Side note: It's also well-optimized. I'm pretty sure I had mine at max settings and it was still a stable 60fps (1080p).
Good for fans of the original (as long as they don't mind the shift to 3D) - lots of nods and callbacks.
Digno sucesor... Buena historia, buenos dialogo y actualizado a nuevos tiempos.
It is rare for a sequel to be better than the original but in this game all expectations were exceeded. Brilliant storyline and some challenging puzzles with easy to use controls. Give yourself a treat when you have to time to invest in the game for once you start, you cannot stop.
A nice retelling of the original. Worth the Play if you've played the original or a newcomer. It's very linier and very easy to progress.
I bought Beyond a Steel Sky for one reason and one reason only: nostalgia. I played Beneath a Steel Sky back in the day and remembered it fondly, even if most of the details had long since been evicted from my memory to make room for more important things, like where I left my car keys. As an adventure game, this is a solid effort. The puzzles are generally fair and of moderate difficulty. Once you understand the game's core mechanics, most solutions become reasonably logical, which is refreshing in a genre that occasionally mistakes insanity for puzzle design. The soundtrack is probably the strongest part of the experience, doing a great job of carrying the atmosphere while you're wandering around trying to remember why you came into this room. The story, unfortunately, is a bit cliché. Not bad, just familiar. The graphics are decent too, although my PC seemed to believe it was rendering the next Mars landing. I had to lower the graphical settings because my machine was getting so hot that it started sounding like it was preparing for takeoff. Nothing ruins immersion quite like wondering whether the next thing to crash will be the protagonist or your CPU. In the end, I enjoyed the game. But the funniest thing is that after finishing this modern sequel, my first reaction wasn't "I should play this again." It was "You know what? I kind of want to replay the 1994 original." I'm not entirely sure whether that's a compliment to Beyond a Steel Sky or a testament to how good Beneath a Steel Sky still is. A soli 7/10
Good story
Mahtava jatko-osa alkuperäiselle Beneath the steel sky pelille. 11/10. Ei mitään paitsi hyvää!
