Beltion: Beyond Ritual is one of those fantasy RPGs that clearly aimed higher than its budget, technology, or localization pipeline could support, and that contrast between ambition and execution defines nearly every part of the experience. Developed by Rostok Games and later brought to Steam by Strategy First, it is rooted in the fiction of Alexander Zorich, whose novels and lore shape the tone, aesthetic, and structure of the world. From the moment the game begins, you are positioned as an operative of a powerful inquisitorial order, someone whose duty blends moral judgment, military force, and bureaucratic authority. This underlying premise sets the stage for a dark fantasy journey built on conspiracies, forbidden magic, political violence, and the growing suspicion that the truth behind the rituals you investigate is stranger and more dangerous than the doctrine you serve. It has a somber tone that leans heavily on narrative intention, drawing from its literary background more than from genre trends of its era. As an action RPG, Beltion mixes melee combat, ranged attacks, and skill-based progression, but the systems feel reminiscent of older PC RPGs—functional enough to support the narrative but lacking refinement. Combat is weighty but stiff, with weapon swings that often feel slow and a collision system that can make encounters inconsistent. Progression is tied to licenses, skills, and roles that represent your character’s professional standing within the inquisition. While this sounds like a sophisticated take on character growth, the mechanics rarely reach the complexity suggested in the lore. Some abilities feel underdeveloped, and the balance between playstyles is uneven, resulting in a system where melee becomes the reliable backbone of most encounters while alternative paths often feel vestigial. Still, there is a certain charm in its clunky earnestness—an attempt to build a grounded, gritty combat experience that matches the grim tone of the world. The world itself is one of Beltion’s more intriguing qualities. Despite technical limitations, the environments reflect a distinct Eastern European fantasy sensibility, with windswept villages, stone fortresses, shadowed forests, and relic-filled ruins offering glimpses of a culture struggling against internal corruption and external supernatural threats. The game brings you across regions that, on paper, promise variety and personality: ports, dungeons, ritual sites, and battlefields all contribute to a sense of geographic range. That said, the level design tends toward linearity despite promotional claims of a living world. Paths are often narrow, detours rare, and optional quests sometimes feel like extensions of the main road rather than meaningful diversions. Yet even here, the atmosphere carries weight; the art direction and story context bring an underlying melancholy that lingers even when the gameplay falters. Narratively, Beltion’s strongest moments lie in its moral and political ambiguity. Your character, trained to judge and punish the misuse of magic, gradually uncovers contradictions between doctrine and reality. Factions within the inquisition pursue conflicting agendas, enemies wield arcane forces tied to deeper conspiracies, and ordinary citizens become collateral damage in the struggle between authority and occult power. This gives the story a texture rarely seen in mid-budget RPGs of its era—an attempt to explore gray morality instead of resting on simple hero narratives. Even though the storytelling is often undermined by translation issues, the underlying ideas retain a sense of depth, suggesting a larger and more nuanced world than the surface presentation might imply. However, the game’s biggest stumbling block is its lack of proper localization. Much of Beltion was originally created in Russian, and the English version, even on modern storefronts, suffers from incomplete translations, awkward phrasing, missing text, and inconsistencies that make it difficult for non-Russian speakers to fully grasp the subtleties of the story. This becomes especially problematic in a game where narrative is one of the primary selling points. Some fans have resorted to community patches to fill the gaps, but it remains evident that Beltion never received the translation care its writing warranted. Combined with clunky UI elements, dated animations, and occasional technical glitches, the overall experience can feel rough and uneven. Despite all these flaws, Beltion: Beyond Ritual holds a peculiar appeal. For players who enjoy lost or obscure RPGs that blend ambition with imperfection, it offers a glimpse into a unique fantasy setting shaped by literary imagination rather than commercial formula. Its bleak tone, tangled conspiracies, and morally conflicted protagonist give it a distinctive identity that some modern games lack. But to appreciate it, you must accept its limitations: aging visuals, rigid combat, sparse world interaction, and a localization that obscures as much as it reveals. Beltion is less a polished RPG and more a fragment of a much larger vision—a project whose ideas outpaced its execution, but whose personality still manages to shine through for those patient enough to see it. Rating: 7/10
Hidden gem RPG that finally got an English translation for those who love Russian/Ukrainian RPGs but do not know Russian at all. Big thanks to the translator for giving us the possibily to play this gem. This game has an intense 2000's flavour for those of us who like this stuff. It looks like Gothic/Risen, but plays more like Enclave, with more RPG elements and a hub-based structure. In any case, it is unique on its own. If you are into obscure RPGs from the olde era, rejoice! this is your next journey.
more slavic rpgs plz!
