About

Attention Operator,
You have been selected to oversee a critical mission. Our team of elite soldiers is set to descend into a newly discovered abyss, believed to lead to uncharted territories beneath the earth. Your role is to monitor the soldiers' progress, ensuring their safety and collecting data.

As they venture deeper, remain vigilant and provide guidance based on their transmissions. You will have access to a status monitor, a radar, a radio to scan various frequencies, and other equipment to assist in your mission.
Be aware that communication may become sporadic as they descend. Strange anomalies have already been detected, and the nature of the abyss remains unknown.

Prepare for the unexpected and maintain operational readiness at all times. Prepare to face the unimaginable.
End of message.

Below, Rusted Gods is definitely an extreme edge case for me to recommend or not. TLDR at the bottom. I am going to recommend it, but I cannot stress enough how razor thin this margin is. I've had my eye on Below for a year or two since a next fest where I was quite impressed with the demo and maybe that's part of the problem. A Next Fest Demo, what does that even mean. Does it mean the game is just in alpha or beta and there'll be a lot more content and features and mechanics as the game develops? Or is the game basically done already and the demo is more just for wish lists and marketing. You don't always get to know. Maybe another part of the problem is that when I like something, I expect more? Could be true. I like seeing things live up to their potential. Or maybe I'm just unfair and insane and expect too much. That is a fair criticism. Okay back to the game itself. Below, Rusted Gods,,, definitely has some good bones, there's just not hardly any meat on them. I really like the bodycam realistic graphical style, the core gameplay loop as an idea, and the little bit of world building going on. I just wish there was more. The game is about 2 and 1/2 hours long and has very little gameplay... and that's being extremely generous. I won't debate here if its intentionally just over 2 hours to prevent people finishing it once and making a return... Moving on... You play as an operator leading a team into a supernatural lovecraftian elder god type cavern/liminal space. You have a terminal that you use to communicate with your 4 person team, a radar station, a health monitoring station, a log of communications, a TV monitor with VHS, a cassette player, and a radio. I can't express how much I love this idea for a game. However just about every mechanic in the game falls flat, is only used once or twice, or actually isn't interactive. Using the terminal you really only make a very few limited choices during the entire game, a lot of it is one sided conversations as your team loses its mind confessing horrific things to you and your only reply is "understood" or "noted". The radar station is used for one "puzzle" that you solve at a glace in less than a second. The monitoring station is somehow both underused and annoying at the same time, you need to wait for it every time you want to switch between team members output, its a few seconds, but if you're trying to get into the game it gets old fast, but in reality, there's almost no point to monitoring your team's health, and its really only used for one "puzzle". The log isn't used for any puzzles, but is used once to advance the story. The TV monitor is only used once for advancing the story, but there are a few VHS tapes (collectables, no story impact or even really lore) with disturbing or creepy images, The cassette player is the same but obviously audio only. The radio is used twice, maybe three times. Once to show you how to use it, then once to solve a mandatory "puzzle", then once for something optional. You might be wondering why I keep saying "puzzle" well its because those are not really puzzles... in fact there's only two things in the whole game I would actually call a real puzzle. As a side note...one of them bugged out for me, and I had to restart the game from an earlier save. You do get to explore your own space a little bit more, but this is just fodder for mild jump scares and collectibles and the two real puzzles, Once you've seen an area once... you typically don't go back. Well okay you go through the bathroom maybe three times and into the basement twice... but the deeper rooms you are done with after one visit. Then its over. There are multiple endings and collectibles, but I very easily got all collectibles in my first play and I feel like I can easily decern what the other endings are. I do dislike games that artificially inflate their play time with backtracking or unnecessary mechanics, but this is the other side of the coin. There's just too little of everything. Constantly the game would make me think, okay here we go, this is gonna be a thing, an interaction, a puzzle, something neat and then... nothing. Maybe 1 line of dialog..., maybe I can hold out hope for content patches or DLC (lol) but... I think for its low price point, Below, Rusted Gods (should really be just God singular) is what it is. Maybe Below, Rusted Gods 2? TLDR: To sum it all up, If you're looking for a short, bodycam style horror experience... you've got it and you might feel pretty good about it overall. If you wanted more gameplay, puzzles, deeper lore, deeper everything... you're going to be disappointed. The game looks great, and has some really interesting ideas, and I actually love the setting and the whiff of what it could all become... but it just doesn't really do anything or go any where and its all over in a flash.

Okay wow first of all this is one of the best horror games that got released this year. Not only do you get multiple endings, intersting dialogs, an creepy story but also an tense and good horror atmosphere. It reminds me to great games like Routine or Alien Isolation.
Sem dúvidas um dos jogos de terror mais interessantes que joguei esse ano. A proposta é simples.
It's a good, albeit short, game. Great atmosphere, most of the scares were well done and well paced, and the game looks, sounds, and feels great. However, there's not a ton of meat on these bones. There are only basically 3 puzzles, but all of them are semi-optional (you have to complete them for the "good" ending, but can fail/skip them and still get an ending). They're well designed, with just enough clues to give an idea of how to solve them but hardly holding your hand. Not like a classic adventure point-and-click puzzle or your average RE/SH survival horror puzzle. Outside of those, though, it's pretty much a straight run through some dialogue. You're set up in a control room with a bunch of monitoring equipment that feels like it will be relevant, but the uses of any piece of equipment are infrequent and by the end of the game, you will have barely used any one of them. For example, there's a TV in the room that shows a "live broadcast" of the entrance of this tunnel, and it provides a really good scare, but once you've seen that scare, it basically shows a static image for the rest of the game (a little animation with variable lighting and a character model moving in an idle position, but that's all and that's how it stays). There's a medical monitoring terminal that goes unused for almost the entire game - just for use twice specifically when prompted and once more for bad endings. So on. It almost feels daunting when you first start the game and see how much equipment you're technically supposed to be monitoring, but so little of it gets used that it ends up feeling like a promise unfulfilled. That said, it is still a fun romp and an interesting setting. It's kinda cool being the "guy in the chair" for a change, almost in the same vein as Iron Lung or the newer MOLE where you're disconnected/dissociated from the scary events through screens and monitors. I just wish they had gone a bit more on the monitoring sim, and a little less on the direct scares. Still, not a bad time, I just wouldn't put it much higher than like a 6/10. Gets a thumbs up from me, but only barely.
tl;dr the game has some really good bones but is ultimately underwhelming, and only a slight step up from the "walking sim horror" genre Like some others I'm pretty mixed on this. It's close to being good for me but just doesn't quite make the cut. I'd like to temper some expectations for anyone consider buying the game. Pros: - Interesting setting, good atmosphere - Has a few puzzles, I actually enjoyed them. I appreciated that they required some thought and the game gives you everything you need to solve them. - Some spooky setpieces that are quite well designed - No cheap jumpscares - Great use of audio - A lot of the horror is communicated via text, and it's written pretty well - Multiple endings based on player choices. Once you know how to get the "good" ending you feel motivated to try Cons: - Multiple endings. I know it's in the Pros section, but only 1 of the 4 endings is particularly interesting with the others just being variations of "bad endings", none of which add anything to the player's understanding of the game world - Sets up interesting mechanics that end up being one-offs. This is the main problem with the game. Initially it seems like the video feed, radio, medical terminal, and log will all be used throughout the game, maybe requiring some management of all of them. Instead, they end up being either entirely optional or gating some information behind being used once. The video feed feature is used once for storytelling purposes, which was a shame. I think it could've been used to much greater effect - Once you realize this, the game is basically a walking simulator with some light interactivity The fact I felt compelled to leave a review about this game I think is overall a good sign. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the dev cooks up. Thanks for making this!
Genuinely spooky!! Will definitely play this over a few times :D Good work devs! Edit: Just beat it, got the 'Rusted Gods' ending. Absolutely phenomenal experience. This is actually a game I wish Markiplier made a movie of; the atmosphere is so up my alley. Hope we see something get branched off from this universe or another game similar :)
The first half of the game was really good at building the suspense. However after the halfway point, the story seemed to lose the suspense and the plot. All the questions that were being asked did not get answered by the end.
I was stiff and puckered from start to finish, 10/10
