Played on Steam Deck, works great with no adjustments needed. Hidden gem with a surprising depth of level design, boss design, and difficulty. You can't just faceroll this one, you have to pay attention. Sometimes exhilarating, often BS. As someone who played on retro mode, I recommend playing on easy mode, which has more HP and checkpoints. Choose retro only if you want a very intense experience. I wish some powerups were tuned to be less difficult to use. I also wish it was more obvious what sprites are dangerous, you can pass through, you can stand on, etc. Readability is important in a platformer! The music and art have own their weird little charm. They feel authentically like they're from the GBC era when things were raw and experimental, instead of feeling like an homage. Backgrounds are whimsically designed, and music is a quirky arrangement of bleeps and bloops. EDIT: 100 percented the game on retro. You can see a lot of creativity and intentionality in the dev's game design. Some of the endgame stuff is brutal. There's truly no place to breathe sometimes. Made it 50 percent fun, 50 percent annoyingly unfun for me. Recommended to those who like intense platforming.
Reminds me a lot of Super Mario Land 2 at first. Like the first two levels make you think you're going to be playing a fun, cute platformer, but it soon gets hard but not really in a good way. Checkpoints are stretched too far and you're asked to do things the game's way perfectly instead of being able to do anything interesting. I still think the actual platforming is pretty good though, I'm just disappointed in the levels that the developer seems to think were "challenging" but they were just kind of tedious because it felt like multiple precision platforming levels duct taped together. Don't play on "retro" mode because it only gives you two hits before you die which is not enough for all the obstacles you face. Overall it's an incredibly gorgeous game that decides to be a precision platformer for some reason halfway through. But becuase precision platformers should prioritize clarity over graphics, this game's garishness is more of a frustration than a marvel, which is a shame because it looks so nice. I know some people are looking at these complaints and thinking "Wow I love challenge, sign me up, I beat every souls game and..." but trust me I actively did not want to play this game after awhile and had to force myself through the last few stages. I do not think this game should be made easier, rather it should be just be redesigned to be fun over precise.

cute, challenging platformer
Fofo, criativo e bumerangue
Played through the first three levels. Well, most of the third level. Mechanics just weren't very fun. Boomerang is not satisfying to use and the other mechanics I encountered weren't either. Stage 2 had a bizarre pick-a-door ending that, perhaps I'm dense, but I never understood and eventually just progressed through by dumb luck and repetition. Very, very unenjoyable. Heard that there was a boss in the third stage, so I stuck it out to see how the boss was. Beat the first boss and was very underwhelmed by it. I just stood in place and spammed attack until it was over. But then the level wasn't even over. It then began this excruciating slowly descending autoscroll section that was just completely devoid of enjoyment. It was at this point that I called it quits on the game. If you enjoy this game, good for you. It just very much wasn't for me. Refunded.
A retro 2d platformer that's really punishing. Played 100% on Steam Deck L. (+) Tight controls with simple gameplay that works very well (+) Retro difficulty is quite punishing but didn't feel unfair (+) There are some good secrets to find here (+) Enjoyable boss fights (-) Terrible visuals that are very very confusing and do not present the layout properly, that's my main gripe with the game. You can't really tell if the scenario is a platform, an enemy or if you'll fall to you death. This is the biggest source of frustration of the game. (-) Due to the bad visual indicators, during some fights you are really left wondering what are you supposed to do.
Somehow I only first heard of this at the end of last year. I added it to my Winter Sale haul and 9 hours later for a retro difficulty 100% clear it turns out it's quite a gem. I'll start with mentioning the many aspects of Belle Boomerang that don't fit my tastes in action games. You have a huge hurtbox with one move speed that makes micro adjustments and turning around dangerous. You can't crouch. Your jump has no momentum. Your anemic shot with no built-in autofire has a cooldown and needs to be timed, aimed and spaced correctly (it can be upgraded, but the first two enhancements could really just be your base shot). Autoscrollers are employed sparingly, yet there's many times you must simply wait which add up over respawns. There's also moments you're forced to mash to avoid damage, which again add up over attempts. Finally, there's parts where RNG determines whether it's trivial or difficult and one section comes to mind where it can be certain death if you don't know about it beforehand. When you move past all that, however, you are left with a checkpoint game that scratches the itch of the best of them from GnG to Demon's World to R-Type. Since it's not an arcade game, it packs a surprising amount of variety with each stage focusing on its own powerup and exclusive hazards without resorting to genre shifts. The most "fat" the game has is probably in its first two levels. I actually forgot about the second until I read another review here. By the third stage the game starts to hone in on its identity and by stage four you really get into the vortex of improving your execution and slowly piecing ideas together for the next challenge on each death. It's not as tightly designed as the titles I mentioned with some dry sections you'll repeat a lot due to checkpoint placement. The game looking and sounding so pretty also has the caveat that environmental cues are more subtle than they could be. For example, I thought the black holes were merely decoration and didn't know they could kill you until I went back to Act 8 after beating the game. Still, minor clarity issues are a trifle when it executes its HD Gameboy Color concept so well. The only thing that genuinely needs fixing is the Flight boss retaining an active hitbox in the center of the stage until his first attack. Easy recommendation if the mood for a simple action game strikes you.
This game is just pure fun with unique mechanics for each stage, combined with a cool looking world, a wide variety of enemies all set within the bounds of a classic style platformer. What's not to love? And even though I suck at games I still appreciate the challenge this passionate game offers!
