A retro 2d platformer that's really punishing. Played 100% on Steam Deck L. (+) Tight controls with simple gameplay that works very well (+) Retro difficulty is quite punishing but didn't feel unfair (+) There are some good secrets to find here (+) Enjoyable boss fights (-) Terrible visuals that are very very confusing and do not present the layout properly, that's my main gripe with the game. You can't really tell if the scenario is a platform, an enemy or if you'll fall to you death. This is the biggest source of frustration of the game. (-) Due to the bad visual indicators, during some fights you are really left wondering what are you supposed to do.
Somehow I only first heard of this at the end of last year. I added it to my Winter Sale haul and 9 hours later for a retro difficulty 100% clear it turns out it's quite a gem. I'll start with mentioning the many aspects of Belle Boomerang that don't fit my tastes in action games. You have a huge hurtbox with one move speed that makes micro adjustments and turning around dangerous. You can't crouch. Your jump has no momentum. Your anemic shot with no built-in autofire has a cooldown and needs to be timed, aimed and spaced correctly (it can be upgraded, but the first two enhancements could really just be your base shot). Autoscrollers are employed sparingly, yet there's many times you must simply wait which add up over respawns. There's also moments you're forced to mash to avoid damage, which again add up over attempts. Finally, there's parts where RNG determines whether it's trivial or difficult and one section comes to mind where it can be certain death if you don't know about it beforehand. When you move past all that, however, you are left with a checkpoint game that scratches the itch of the best of them from GnG to Demon's World to R-Type. Since it's not an arcade game, it packs a surprising amount of variety with each stage focusing on its own powerup and exclusive hazards without resorting to genre shifts. The most "fat" the game has is probably in its first two levels. I actually forgot about the second until I read another review here. By the third stage the game starts to hone in on its identity and by stage four you really get into the vortex of improving your execution and slowly piecing ideas together for the next challenge on each death. It's not as tightly designed as the titles I mentioned with some dry sections you'll repeat a lot due to checkpoint placement. The game looking and sounding so pretty also has the caveat that environmental cues are more subtle than they could be. For example, I thought the black holes were merely decoration and didn't know they could kill you until I went back to Act 8 after beating the game. Still, minor clarity issues are a trifle when it executes its HD Gameboy Color concept so well. The only thing that genuinely needs fixing is the Flight boss retaining an active hitbox in the center of the stage until his first attack. Easy recommendation if the mood for a simple action game strikes you.

This right here, this is a good example of how to do modern retro platformers. I don't really have any big gripes with it, so I'm not gonna bother with a pros and cons list. It's the perfect length. 100% on the harder of two difficulties took me 6 hours. The music and art design are top notch. The writing flows very nicely and adds a lot of identity to the characters you occasionally chat with. No typos or awkward sentences that I could find. This feels like it could legitimately be an NES game, but the difficulty hit me as completely fair and designed with a modern eye. This keeps it free of retro game jank. Everything is tight and responsive, and the abilities are super unique and an absolute treat to use. Also, the level setpieces are incredibly varied, with a lot of cute visual tricks, but nothing felt out of place. There are clear nods to Kirby and Mega Man, but all in all I did not feel like I was playing either of those games in the slightest. Belle Boomerang is her own heroine, and the game stays firmly in "inspiration" territory, never becoming a ripoff. Also, the boss fights are some of the most creative I've seen in a game like this, and learning them was a blast. Worth every penny. I got it on sale, but after playing through it I can easily recommend it at full price. The only warning I have is that according to a friend, some of the platforms can potentially blend a bit with the background. This was never a problem for me during my entire playthrough, but it bears mentioning. Otherwise, this game does everything it sets out to do with aplomb.
muito bom, fez eu quebra o pc 3 vezes, porém, ainda sim é bom
Jogo extremamente divertido e com desafios na medida certa! Virou um dos meus jogos favoritos!
This was a very pleasant surprise! It's a old school platformer with charming graphic that emind me alot or kirby adventure. that said, your character moveset is more greared toward platforming than offense, and all the stage are really well design, keeping this in mind, without feeling cheap or repetitive. The boss battles are another highlight, providing interesting challenge and have a gereat flow/setpiece pace. And the whole dynamic of having all stage play out like, well, an actual stage, complete with chat with the ennemies/actors in between, gives the whole adventure a very pleasant vibe. The music also fits the NES era damn well, all while being pleasant to the ears. The game challenge is high but never unfair even at the 'retro' harder difficulty level, which was more than welcome. This is not a cheap nostalgia bait, this is professional work and the real deal. If you remotely love platformers, this one is a winner! ^^
Enjoyable, well made platformer. I downgraded the difficulty from retro to newcomer, while I was able to play the retro mode without any issue the frequency of checkpoints made me switch, though this had the additional effect of decreasing enemies numbers and health which I wasn't happy about, since I am sure I can handle that combination of enemies, but I don't have the motivation or the time to play with that amount of checkpoints. If you are interested I would suggest starting with the retro mode, and if you change your mind you can change the save file difficulty, but it is one way only. You can downgrade only!
Fun little game. I just wish the ending of the game wasn't such a stark difficulty contrast. For some reason I struggled a lot to finish the final boss and second to last level on first completion, but it felt fine on subsequent playing. Plays more like a puzzle platformer and that's pretty cool :3
Got this for free from a giveaway on narwhalnut's bluesky. It's a nice lil' 2D platformer, has collectables as an incentive to redo levels, if you're unsure on whether you're feeling it or not I'd give it up to the waterfall level. There's tricky platforming challenges from there onwards but nothing unfair. The pixel art is pretty and you can fullscreen the game on PC. Its also available on Switch I think? If you're wanting some 8bit gameboy nostalgia. Dunno about the Switch2 as I'm unfamiliar with that newer console. Plot is a simple 'stop the bad guy' which works for the genre the game is referencing. (Retro 2D games) If like me you can't initially understand what key does which and mash them going aaaa when opening the game figure out which key is the down button, go to options and change your keybindings to whatever makes sense for you.
