New favorite farming/community game. Love the aesthetics and characters. Took me a moment to figure out where some things are but nothing impossible. Once you figure out a routine in game, time kind of just flies by. Also having issue with the one review not recommending the game as at least half of the problems found have simple solutions found by just paying attention.
This game has an incredible atmosphere that is unique. It is very fun and you should play it.
The world of 'Before the Green Moon' is a quite dystopia. You are not a hero, you are not a rebel, you are just a farmer and this is the world you live in and you need to make due. It is the people, the community you live in that nonetheless makes everything worth it. But you will leave it all behind, because this is 'before the green moon'. It is temporary, fleeting - a pit stop in your life. And yet, it is still worth being told.
There's so much I could talk about this game, it really hit me personally. This game comes straigth from the 2000s, when that future with plants all around and space travel was a promise and I spent my time playing harvest moon all day long. There are little details throughout the game that sell the humanity behind it: How characters have their lives and struggles that don't revolve around you, Elvis having a specific animation for taking a smoke break during work hours, all places you can sit and just be... The dialogues felt really genuine, it is a future I can see happening. I must admit I am struggling with the message of the game, but exactly because it feels hard to move on from the little town at the base of the elevator.
really cool underrate gem. art style reminds me of chulip or ff7
Before The Green Moon, developed and published by Turnfollow, is a farming and life simulation game that initially presents itself with familiar genre elements but gradually reveals a far more subdued and introspective identity. Set in a quiet, somewhat desolate world beneath a towering space elevator, the game frames its central objective with unusual clarity: earn enough money to leave Earth and travel to the moon. This simple goal casts a long shadow over the entire experience, turning everyday routines into steps toward a distant and uncertain future. At its core, the gameplay revolves around farming, but it deliberately strips away much of the convenience and comfort typically associated with the genre. Growing crops is not just a relaxing activity here—it is labor-intensive and often demanding. Players must manage planting, watering, and harvesting with a level of manual involvement that can feel repetitive, especially as environmental conditions change. When rainfall becomes scarce, the burden of maintaining crops increases significantly, forcing players to actively transport water and manage their time more carefully. This emphasis on effort and routine gives the game a grounded, almost somber tone, transforming what is usually a soothing loop into something more reflective and, at times, exhausting. Beyond farming, the surrounding settlement offers a small but meaningful space for exploration and interaction. The characters who inhabit this world are not immediately welcoming, and the game avoids traditional systems that quantify relationships. Instead, connections are built slowly through repeated encounters and subtle dialogue changes. This approach mirrors real-life social dynamics more closely than typical simulation games, where friendships often progress through clearly defined mechanics. Over time, these interactions create a sense of quiet familiarity, though they remain understated rather than overtly emotional. The narrative unfolds in a similarly restrained manner, relying more on atmosphere and implication than direct storytelling. The presence of the space elevator serves as a constant reminder of the possibility of escape, yet the longer players remain in the town, the more that idea becomes complicated. Daily routines, small interactions, and the passage of time begin to create a sense of attachment, raising questions about whether leaving is truly the desired outcome. This tension between staying and going becomes one of the game’s most compelling elements, offering a subtle but persistent emotional undercurrent. Visually, the game adopts a low-poly, retro-inspired style that prioritizes mood over detail. Character models and animations are simple, sometimes to the point of feeling rough, but the environments are carefully constructed to evoke a sense of isolation and quiet reflection. The muted color palette and minimalistic design reinforce the game’s atmosphere, while the soundtrack provides a soft, unobtrusive backdrop that enhances the feeling of solitude. Together, these elements create a cohesive presentation that supports the game’s themes without drawing attention to itself. However, the same qualities that make Before The Green Moon distinctive can also limit its appeal. The pacing is intentionally slow, and the repetitive nature of its core systems may test the patience of players looking for more dynamic progression. There is little in the way of guidance, leaving players to discover mechanics and objectives on their own, which can feel disorienting at times. Additionally, the game does not significantly expand its systems as it progresses, meaning that the experience relies heavily on the player’s ability to find meaning in routine rather than in evolving gameplay. In the end, Before The Green Moon offers a contemplative take on the farming simulation genre, one that replaces comfort and escapism with reflection and subtle emotional tension. It is less about building a thriving life and more about enduring one, questioning what it means to move forward while leaving something behind. While its deliberate pacing and repetitive structure may not resonate with everyone, it provides a unique and quietly thought-provoking experience for those willing to engage with its slower, more introspective approach. Rating: 8/10
Very emotional little adventure, Im gonna miss my chickens.
chill game with great writing and art. The characters are great and the bits of worldbuilding that the game injects give it a really good sense of place. Never played a farming sim before so I wasn't too sure what to expect but it was a great experience.
This is a great setting for a Stardew-like.
This game is delightful! I purchased this on discount initially on the switch, which is where I played the game to completion. I liked it so much, I bought it again on PC! I love the look of this game-it reminds me so strongly of the pre-rendered sort of visuals you would see in Harvest Moon 64 or FFVII, but realized in real-time. The strain of melancholy that goes through the experience really makes the game stand apart. I also love how quirky the environment is, from the snails that litter the landscape during the rainy season to the descriptions of how the plants you grow will be used once shipped. Favorite had to be the bananas! An excellent experience that gently encouraged me to complete it without overstaying its welcome.
