Becoming Captain is an interesting game. The graphics are very cool and give you that sci fi piratey feel along with the handling of the weapons. One of my favorite things is the weapon sound effects because it really gives you that futuristic feel for the game. While the game makes you make decisions based on draws you get for cards from your deck - or what you're holding, the challenge is keeping track of all of the buffs/debuffs as well during your battles. It keeps you on your toes and has some very interesting things to look out for. Likes: graphics, sound effects, variety of weapons (didn't see the flamethrower yet is it rare?) Dislikes: IMO if i have a card in my inventory i should be able to just pull it out of my inventory for 1 energy without it being a random draw. I experienced three things that seemed like glitches that i want to remark about as well: 1. I reported this - a bottle that i received as a buff said "text" on it and didn't show anything it was doing. 2. The flamethrower has a 50% chance to destroy the gun with its big attack. I did it 20 times without that happening. 3. During my final fight in my 2nd playthrough for some reason I never recovered energy despite not having any debuff to take more than 1 of it away per turn. The first run I had that it didn't leave me with just 0 energy for the entire fight. Overall this game has a lot of charm to it and i think its definitely a fun playthrough. It was easier than I expected. I remember in the demo having some issues with "mini bosses". I look forward to seeing more updates and additions to this game in the future.
This really unique deck-builder gives you a lot opportunities to play a variety of different ways. Your weapons spawn cards that are bound to the weapon and sometimes synergize really well and sometimes add extra challenges. Your deck is constantly shifting since cards are destroyed after playing, adding a really great dynamic of figuring out how you want to play your deck or just letting chance take the wheel. There extra perks (and curses) for your character that you can gain through events or through the shop, and a scrapping system for when you have too many cards so you can turn a few into a coin to buy more. It's a really great, ever-shifting system that means each playthrough feels fresh and new. There are still a few bugs at my time of review, but I've had good experiences reporting them and seeing them fixed!! I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops!!
The premise is simple. You’ve been captured and thrown into a spaceship prison, and now your only way out is to climb through the ranks by competing in the ship’s card tournament. The core gameplay will feel familiar if you’ve played similar titles. You take turns drawing cards from your pile and placing them on the field. Each card can deal damage, heal, or trigger an effect, and the goal is straightforward, be the last one standing. Every card has an energy cost, shown as a circled number in the top right corner. You can play as many cards as your energy allows, and since your energy fully refills every turn, it makes sense to use it all. Even if your hand is empty, you can still draw from the shared central pile, which both you and your opponent rely on. Played cards don’t stick around forever. Some activate instantly and are destroyed right away, like healing cards, while others linger for a few turns. Weapons are a bit more involved. When placed in one of the two weapon slots on the board, they give you access to special attack cards tied to that weapon. You can then use those attacks to deal damage. Weapons stay equipped between turns, but each time you use one of their attacks, their durability drops. Once it reaches zero, the weapon breaks and any related attack cards in your hand disappear with it. Since you only have two weapon slots, you might need to swap things around. The good news is you can return a weapon to your hand without spending energy, which gives you some flexibility mid-fight. You’re encouraged to draw as many cards as possible because unused ones carry over to the next opponent. That said, your health carries over too, so dragging out a fight can leave you in a rough spot for what comes next. After a win, you’ll earn some coins and visit a shop where you can pick up new cards or perks, like extra armor or reduced energy costs for certain weapons. If you lose, you can jump back in or head to the main menu. There’s not much in terms of progression outside of matches. No customization, no meta system, and very little randomness beyond occasional events where you choose between two outcomes. Honestly, that’s where things start to feel a bit unfinished. The game is priced like a full release, but it comes across more like early access. Clicking on your deck shows a “work in progress” message, and the main menu even teases features that haven’t been added yet, including proper progression systems. Because of that, I’d suggest holding off for now.
Very nice and fun game. The first challenge is to get a deck with good synergy with the custom perks that you get. Make you think a little but once you get your setup right, you get to enjoy slashing the enemies like a hot knife through butter! Good ambiance and nice visuals that makes a good quick game to play in a pinch. May have a few bugs here and there but still worth it !
The gameplay feels genuinely rewarding. There’s a solid sense of progression, and every run keeps you engaged thanks to the variety in weapon cards—it’s a really cool system that adds a lot of replay value. There are a few bugs here and there, mainly with character photos not always appearing, but honestly it didn’t take away from the overall experience or the fun. If I had one real complaint, it would be the soundtrack. More variety in the music would go a long way in keeping things fresh during longer sessions. Overall, despite a couple small issues, this is a fun and engaging game that’s easy to recommend.
Interesting concept for a deckbuilder. You can get temporary cards during a battle and add permanent cards between rounds. I do wish one use cards were identified as such.
Deck building in its purest form so its easy to get into. You can already tell the scope of the game is large and I just read through the planned features and was shocked! I can't wait to see what gets added
this game is a very interesting twist on deckbuilding, the cards are well detailed and varied. artstyle is fresh and completely free of Ai and offer a lot of situation varied actions to choose from. i honestly had a good time seeing it evolve from the start of its development, a lot of the effect in the game ads to each other and makes battle chaotic and with the right pattern and weapon choice makes the battles varied and fun, some enemies if you are not well equipped will whip the floor with you but as long as you learn. you will become captain!
This games still pretty basic, but the enjoyment isn't! I cannot wait to see where it goes as the dev fleshes it out a bit. Definitely will be replaying this one each major update!
To become Captain you need some savvy and don't let the rum dull your senses or you may regret your choices. Health carries over, so if you were bleeding all over the deck, you may not be in the best shape for the next fight. The game was challenging and fun. I am looking forward to playing some more and finally (hopefully) become the next Captain.
