As an old fart who pumped all his lunch money into a Battlezone console in a shop an his way to school each morning in the early-mid 80's, this game really took me back (I realise that I'm VERY late to the party with this review). Anyhoo, this game is great! Play it on classic mode for the Tron vibe. And as this game is currently on sale, it's an absolute steal - it's practically free. Highly, highly recommended.
Get at big discount maybe give it a go, or maybe refund PROS: - Cool looking tank game - VR Mode - Classic Arcade mode with modern or old school handeling - Banger soundtrack - many interesting guns, if you find a merchant CONS: - the game is balances for 4 player coop and is a chore to beat on your own mostly the AI core or boss tanks that come after you if you take to long - Rougelike, make it to center repeat ad infinitum no permanent upgrades - overpriced - FU KN DENUVO
While this game is fun the balance is absolutely terrible. If you want to invest a ton of time (think 90+ minutes ea) into even "short" matches just to lose at the end anyways even on easy mode be my guest. You can also manage to hack every terminal to have a chance at decreasing enemy strength and have it not help you enough to do well. Aesthetically pleasing & gameplay good; still manages in totality a bad game.
Arcade Game, but in the cockpit... This game is exceptionally fun and visually appealing, in the idea of the games that we grew up on in the arcade room playing as the tank. And in how they changed the view to look and appeal to the current visual appeal that we see today in the games that are coming out. This is super fun with friends to play with as you take out all of the enemies that come across your cross-hair in here. This is something that I can come back to playing to on having fun or if someone wants to get this game to play with and have a few hours of tank destroying together. Due to this games shelf life, in my opinion, I would wait for a sale for this game. Still does not diminish the value of fun that you will have on here at all.
If Skynet was a big fan of arcade machines
Unusual futuristic roguelike set in world where neon lights and polygons define fashion, and the wars are waged with tanks that look just like the ones from the old arcade games. Landscapes are big metal wastelans built from simple geometrical shapes with hexagons at the base, containing nothing but big, somewhat open ares with wildly variable elevation, randomly arranged corridors and towers or spires, creating pretty complex and dystopian surroundings. Main target is to move through randomly generated levels, destroying or defending different types of building and enemies in fast-paced, arcadey combat against numerous hostile vehicles of different types, until you reach the lair of evil, tyrannical AI and destroy it. All of that sounds pretty cool, until you actually start playing the game. The levels are pure chaos. Everything around is gigantic and similarly looking, both in shape and colour, making you feel like a little mouse in the house of a giant. There is no map or any kind of signs of where you are and where you need to go except the little radar in the center that shows direction to the nearby enemies and the main target. As a result, most of the time you end up wandering aimlessly, trying to understand where the hell you actually are and how to get to the objective, all the while being shot at by various hostiles around, making the experience of searching for the right way even more chaotic. The designers' love for the neon lights doesn't help at all, adding a severe eye strain to the list of experiences. It gets worse as it progresses, for levels can become pretty long, all while the surroundings remain extremely alike to the point of being indistinguishable. After a while my only thought was: "God, when this bloody mission will finally end?", and it's repeated every level. Unfortunately, that won't be the biggest worry, because next comes the balance of the game. It appears to be clearly multiplayer-oriented, making playing in singleplayer mode kind of miserable.
Disaster around the corner
The main choice of the game is the player's tank: there are several models that you can choose from at the beginning, and all of them, except the lightest one, are absolutely useless: amount of enemies is so high, their precision is so perfect and area of splash damage is so big that every other model just can't avoid them, and so even stronger armour and shields aren't going to protect from inevitable death. Moreover, their weaponry isn't doing enough damage to compensate for extremely small amount of ammunition and slow fire rate, so you can't kill enemies before they surround you and start stripping off bits of your health bar. And then there are flying enemies, agile, fast and numerous, against which slowly rotating heavy tanks with slowly firing cannons are painful to use. But you know what deals with them perfectly? Exactly: the agile, nimble light tank, appropriately armed by default with both decent cannon and the machinegun that excels at destroying flying targets, and even intercepting rockets midair. Then comes the weapon upgrade system. In theory, you find blueprints by hacking the randomly generated factories in missions, and then you find some kind of building that can produce that weapon for you, in mission as well. The thing is that RNG is so awful that, despite finding several random blueprints, I've never ever encountered the place where I can turn them into actual guns, so I had to use the basic gear all the time. Next big headache are mission objectives. Part of them are pretty decently made, like the siege of enemy bases: linear, understandable, providing a fair challenge of getting through limited amount of enemies and then shooting at main building until it goes boom. And then there are defense missions, like protecting convoys and allied bases, all the while numerous enemies flood in the area and attack them, sometimes from several fronts. Perhaps in multiplayer defence a trivial task, but in singleplayer - absolute nightmare, because even though you have couple of allied tanks protecting the targets with you - they are absolutely useless, and so you find yourself constantly moving back and forth, trying to defend the target from every side at the same time. And even if you succeed in protecting it from basic enemies - there are several that can do lots of cheap damage no matter what, like suicide trucks with the speed of a sport car ramming bases from several directions at the same time, or rocket tanks with lots of armour and powerful attacks, or literal swarms of little flying menaces that jam your radar, take forever to kill and then overwhelm with their numbers, moving too fast even for the light and nimble tank. Oh, and there is also a mission type that requires you to defend your base AND attack the enemy's one at the same time! The way enemies spawn is completely unfair: they appear from thin air, even behind you, ending up catching you by surprise and doing more damage. One of the enemies you will eventually fight with is the Nemesis: the biggest, worst meany that appears in the random spot of the map after some time and stays on it, moving between areas until it meets with the player and is killed. When you finally meet it - it appears to be a relatively medium sized tank that is covered in obnoxious bright purple smoke, moves really quickly and shoots in long bursts. Two-three shots from that thing are enough to penetrate even upgraded shields and destroy your tank, all the while Nemesis itself can take dozens and dozens of shots from your cannons. Absolutely disgusting, unoriginal and unfair enemy that provides no fair challenge and is pure annoyance to deal with. Another issue is the ammo problem: the only way of renewing ammunition is through random, rare drops or by killing enemies with blaster cannon - the most useless gun in your arsenal that takes forever to kill even the smallest enemies. The games' advice is to switch to it for finishing the enemy, yet the speed of switching is so slow that it's easy to get shot couple of times by the almost dead target while you're changing from main cannon to blaster, and then by the growing numbers of new enemies while switching back to main cannon. The last thing I'd like to talk about is interface. It's the "immersive" type, with different indicators spread throughout the cabin of your tank. The very big cabin, with most of it not fitting in the frame, the cabin that doesn't move when you lift your cannon, unlike your camera, resulting in all those important indicators simply disappearing from the screen as soon as it's moved up slightly. It also doesn't help that indicators blend with the cabin, making it not only annoying but also eye straining to read them.
Obvious verdict
In the end, what is supposed to be arcadey and energetic casual tank simulator turns into an annoying, tedious, eye straining, repetitive and unfair waste of time.
Для коллекции пойдет, играть абсолютно нет. Максимально скучная и глупая игра.
GOOD OLD SCHOOL ATARI ARCADE IN NEW MULTIMEDIA TRON LIKE EDITION :-) WARNING: THIS GAME LOOKS AND FEELS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN VR AND IS REALLY ADDICTIVE =)
Battlezone! IN VR!!! One of my all time favourite arcade games is now playable on my Quest 3! I loved the arcade cabinet, with it's immersive (for the time) tank gunner's sight attachment and twin stick tank like controls , but this is a whole new level of immersion. Expanded gameplay over the original, but the best part? You can also play the ORIGINAL!! In VR!!! That alone is a good enough reason to buy for me. Excellent!!
Unfair at normal difficulty or above. Devs should be flogged and whipped
