About
Will you defend your kingdom with forbidden magic, or backstab the crown? Win tournaments, kiss a prince or princess, or just seize power for yourself!
Battlemage: Magic by Mail is a 168,000-word interactive novel by Nic Vasudeva-Barkdull. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
You're lucky you saw that ad at the market. "Learn from home! Full battlemage qualification by mail!" it said. Now, your first battlemage assignment is finally here! At last, you can master the magical arts of elementalism, illusion, healing, and necromancy.
Yesterday you were just a squire, but today you're an aspiring battlemage! But Sir Kelton says that squires aren't allowed to practice magic, so you'll need to act like you actually want to be a knight, at least for now.
With the powers you can unlock, maybe you can win a tournament or two, or get in good with the royal family—you can even try your hand at the game of court politics. Or if you really want to get on Kelton's good side, prove yourself on the battlefield, defeating the mysterious invaders that threaten your kingdom's borders.
But beware, if you're not careful, you'll suffer from Arcane Corruption. At first, Corruption warps your physical appearance, but it soon takes over, putting the magic in control.
You won't let that happen, will you?

Necromancy in this game is useless in combat! Who would have known?! I've focused on necromancy and can't do anything. And what magic schools are most impactful besides elemental magic? Ilusion and healing. Ilusion and healing are the most helpful in combat and other events! Just animate some corpses, summon a demon or shoot necrotic energy from your palms ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! What a stupid idea to have necromancy as a ,,subtle magic school that helps in subterfuge". Uhh!
It's not bad, per say, but it's also not exactly great. Other characters don't really feel like they have substance, and it's less about building up your abilities, and more picking what abilities are going to win you that interaction, and future interactions. What that means is your strong fighter is absolutely going to fail to navigate crown politics and vice versa. You've got to have an idea of what sort of build you want before even beginning the game, or fail to achieve much of anything. The pacing of the game is also so-so. You go from being a squire in the country to meeting the queen personally in the space of two minutes with zero build up or context. It's different to a lot of the other Choice/Hosted Games, but not in a good way. It's just ok. Get it if you've managed to play the entire catalogue of games already and have nothing else.
I haven't finished yet but already I can see places I will want to go back and make a different decision. This is a good, hearty adventure for those who like these Choice Of games, and not a bad one to start with if you remember old tabletop D&D fondly, or any related gaming types.
I liked this game a lot, i like how magic could be developed by your feelings, not always having to cast spells. I will agree with the other review tho. It does seem really fast and rushed toward the end. I played a few times, and plan on playing again later, but i feel like after chapter 8, the rest of the game goes to fast, so i wish it was longer at that point. However i like the game, and characters and i would be more than willing to play this again. This is one i liked enough, to replay right after beating it, not something i do for all of them.
After reading some of the reviews I can see how the reviews have earned the "Mixed" tag. After completing my first (and likely only for now) playthrough of the game, I can say that I'm quite satisfied with how it went. There were some loose ends, but I think that was intentional. I recommend this game, but take that with a grain of salt as maybe I was one who "saw things the way the author saw it" and did the right things. Now, for a more in depth analysis, you can continue reading below (little to no spoilers of course) I decided that going into this I would be a Paladin (Buff guy who wields healing magic). Not to get into too many spoilers, I saved the day and got with a romantic partner, so I was satisfied on that front. And in response to the one review that said Healing wasn't there when he needed it, I agree that there were some moments that I thought, "Man, I could use this." But there were more impactful moments that it really shined through. Anyway, there appeared to be other ways to play. I think I could've achieved similar results wielding elemental magic or abandoning magic altogether, but maybe some other characters would've died. The achievement "But at what cost" Made the most sense as it indicates I got the "good" ending with a bittersweet twist at the end. Maybe you can't win at everything. As another review said, failure is baked into this, and I think that's okay. It would be a lot to expect someone to be a master warrior and save the kingdom while also dealing with major plots of intrigue. And I assume there's a whole other path where you can assume the throne of the kingdom as there's an achievement for that. So I guess I ultimately was satisfied with how the story functioned, but again, everyone is different, so yeh.
truth be told, this is the worst CoG i've ever played. u choices simply dont matter. the storyline is fine at start but became totally rushed. the ending is suck a joke that ruined my day, thx to remind me that even i became a powerful mage, im still a loser in life and magic is no help. so to whoever reads it: spend ur money elsewhere, this piece is a watse of time. ps. i played it on phone and replayed it so many fking times and still cant get a decent ending, the achievement is broke too. what a sour day i wish i never played this carp.
The story is good but it was rush. Any scene or action are rush. Look at the number of word in the story before by.
Tee Hee
Bad story. The plot is simple and very predictable. All characters are 1 dimensionall and lack depth. The word presented is in such simplistic way that it leaves no room for growth, also the more you think about it the more it does not make sense. The story is so short that it does not give time for anything to develop besides the main plot as well as its railroaded for the entirety of it and also it's quite short going over raw facts possessing barely any substance. All in all this is a bland, simple, predictable, short story with uninteresting characters where you have little to no influence over your character and the plot. The only things that this has going for it is that it exists and is cohesive.
Played through once. made bad choices, got people killed. 10/10 would ♥♥♥♥ up again.
