About
Battle for Asciion is not just styled like text. It is text.
Every ship, enemy, explosion, background and boss is rendered in real time using actual ASCII characters.
There are no sprites, no textures, no PNGs hidden behind the scenes.
What you see on screen is literal text.

Inspired by legendary horizontal shooters like Gradius and R-Type, Battle for Asciion delivers tight, old-school arcade gameplay focused on precision, memorization and pure skill.
Fight through five long, challenging stages, face giant end-of-level bosses, and upgrade your weapons to survive increasingly intense waves of enemies, all represented purely through text.
To enhance the old-school feel, the game includes multiple visual modes that simulate classic CRT monitors, including scanlines and monochrome phosphor colors such as green, amber and white.
It looks like a terminal.
It plays like an arcade machine.

Battle for Asciion is so text-based that it includes a unique feature we call Textshot™.
Instead of saving screenshots as images, Textshot™ captures the current frame and saves it as a plain .TXT file containing the actual ASCII characters displayed on screen.
Open it in any text editor. Copy it. Share it. Print it.
It’s not an image — it’s the game, frozen in pure text form.

I love the graphical style, its great! Very neat to be able to select the terminal collar (white, green, orange). Unfortunately, the rest is pretty uninspred. While you have 4 ships to choose from, but they are all the same and just chacrater swaps. After beating the game you are told a code to play hardcore mode, but its barely more difficult, and should ahve just been a visible mode from the start. There are 10 secrects to find, but these appear to be just hidden targets you need to shoot, for an additional end of game bonus. I found 2, but here is no real incentive to keep playing to find these.
Battle for Asciion is an unusual and ambitious shoot ’em up that takes one of gaming’s oldest visual concepts and builds an entire action experience around it. Developed and published by Relevo, the game embraces a distinctive ASCII presentation where everything on screen is formed from text characters rather than conventional graphics. While many indie games use retro aesthetics as a nostalgic layer, Battle for Asciion fully commits to its concept, creating a side-scrolling shooter that feels like a forgotten arcade adventure running inside a vintage computer terminal. The gameplay itself follows the traditions established by classic horizontal shooters. Players pilot a spacecraft through a series of dangerous stages packed with enemy waves, environmental hazards, and screen-filling projectile attacks. The design philosophy clearly draws inspiration from genre veterans, focusing on quick reflexes, memorization, and careful movement. Every level demands concentration as enemies attack from multiple directions, forcing players to learn patterns and gradually improve through practice. This old-school structure gives the game a satisfying sense of progression, especially for players who enjoy mastering challenging arcade experiences. One of the game's most impressive achievements is how readable the action remains despite its unconventional visuals. At first glance, a shooter rendered entirely in ASCII might seem chaotic or difficult to follow, yet the developers have managed to create a surprisingly clear battlefield. Enemy ships, bullets, explosions, and environmental details are easy to identify even during hectic moments. Rather than feeling like a novelty that sacrifices gameplay, the visual style becomes an integral part of the experience and helps the title stand out in a crowded genre. The campaign features five stages, each ending with a major boss encounter. These battles serve as the game's highlights, presenting enormous mechanical or alien adversaries constructed entirely from text characters. The bosses showcase impressive creativity and provide memorable tests of skill. Their attack patterns become increasingly elaborate, encouraging players to fully utilize their ship's abilities while carefully managing positioning and timing. The escalating difficulty helps maintain excitement throughout the adventure and gives each level a strong sense of identity. Progression is handled through collectible upgrades that enhance offensive capabilities and improve survival chances. As players advance, they gain access to stronger weaponry and support systems that make combat more dynamic. The inclusion of companion-style options that extend firepower adds strategic depth and pays tribute to classic arcade shooters that rewarded experimentation with different loadouts. These upgrades create a rewarding loop where success feels earned rather than handed to the player. Another aspect that strengthens the retro atmosphere is the collection of display customization options. Various CRT-inspired visual modes recreate the appearance of classic monitors, complete with different phosphor color styles and old-school screen effects. Whether players prefer a green terminal look or a more traditional monochrome display, these settings contribute significantly to immersion. The game feels like a celebration of computing history while still maintaining the responsiveness expected from modern releases. Perhaps the most creative feature is the Textshot system, which allows gameplay moments to be saved as actual text files instead of traditional image screenshots. This unusual mechanic perfectly matches the game's identity and highlights the developers' dedication to their central idea. While it may seem like a small addition, it reinforces the sense that Battle for Asciion is more than just another retro shooter and instead aims to explore what can be accomplished using ASCII as a complete artistic medium. The game's minimalist presentation also comes with practical advantages. It runs smoothly on modest hardware and remains highly accessible for players who may not have powerful gaming systems. Combined with controller support and straightforward mechanics, this makes it easy to jump into despite the challenge waiting beneath the surface. However, newcomers should be prepared for a demanding experience. The game does not rely heavily on modern conveniences and expects players to improve through persistence and repetition. Battle for Asciion will not appeal to everyone. Its retro difficulty, focused content, and text-based visuals may seem niche compared to more visually extravagant shooters. Players looking for a story-driven adventure or extensive progression systems may find the experience somewhat limited. Nevertheless, those limitations stem from a deliberate design philosophy that prioritizes arcade purity and creative presentation over broader mainstream appeal. As a whole, Battle for Asciion succeeds in transforming what could have been a simple gimmick into a genuinely entertaining shoot ’em up. Relevo demonstrates a strong understanding of classic arcade design while introducing a visual concept rarely seen in modern gaming. The combination of challenging gameplay, memorable boss encounters, meaningful upgrades, and inventive ASCII artistry results in a title that feels fresh despite drawing heavily from the past. For fans of retro shooters and experimental indie projects, Battle for Asciion offers a unique experience that proves innovation can still emerge from even the oldest forms of digital expression. Very cool concept, and a good bit of fun!
Retro style horizontal shmup. Maybe not the best out there but very entertaining for a buck. Very cool the TextShot screen capture in ASCII text format. Maybe some sort of global leaderboards can give it more life or replayability.
