Not a single update in a whole year EDIT: Just out of Early Access and no new content at all
I played the game during Early Access and in its final state (which the review is for). In Barbara-Ian you clear a level and descent deeper into the dungeon. You can find different weapons that really make a difference to your gameplay. Combine that with Barbara-Ians slick moves, only ONE hitpoint and some mean traps and you are up for a good amount of fun. Unfortunately the game feels unfinished and you will encounter bugs (falling through the floor, levitating) or run out of things to explore pretty fast. I liked the direction the game was going during Early Access, but the final release disappoints due to the lack of polish. Barbara-Ian plays fluently, the button layout makes sense to me and is rebindable. Music and sound fit the scenario. The visuals are clean and distinct. More lights here and there wouldn't harm, if the hammer of the gods goes all over the place again (no pun intended), destroying light sources. You can have some fun with the game, just don't set your expectations high.
Game Details Published by: Owlbear Ltd. Developed by: Owlbear Ltd. Genre: Action/Indie/Early Access Release Date: 17 Jul, 2015 Completionist Gameplay: Endless “Barbara-ian, a mythical badass with perma-rage & a penchant for smashing. " The Gameplay Barbara-ian is a top-down run and gun action game with a female protagonist. This should already make you want to play the game. If you need further convincing, read on. With only one hit point standing between you and certain death (and the loss of your beloved Tome of Laser Vision), Barbara-ian is the true definition of exciting. If you liked Hotline Miami, I would absolutely recommend buying this. The game being in Early Access shouldn’t deter you. Barbara-ian is fully playable and is not missing any key components. The only reason it is still in Early Access is because the developers want to continue adding more content for us to enjoy. One of my favourite parts about this game is how it forces you to diversify your strategies and step out of your comfort zone. Each time you generate a dungeon will not be like the last, and after many hours of playing I don’t think I remember seeing the same layout twice.(If there was, it was because I died so often I didn’t get a chance to properly remember). To progress, you must unlock multiple chests each level. These chests include weapons that make the enemies you will face slightly easier to kill. You don’t get a choice about which weapons you unlock, so learning how to use them efficiently and without blowing yourself up is a must, and you’ll need to learn quickly. There are holes in the floor that lead to lava and acid and you have the choice of avoiding them completely or using them as traps, luring in your enemies, hoping that they’ll fall in. You’ll be surprised by a swinging sword or a mass of goblins hidden away in a dark corner of the dungeon, or you’ll accidentally knock your only light source to the other side of the room. The entire game forces you to think strategically on your feet, while also testing your reaction time, control and nerves. I also love the physics of this game. When you die, which will be often, you get to watch Barbara fling away across the map, or crumple into a ball. It’s very entertaining to watch, and definitely a smart idea when you think about how often you’ll be dying in this game. The Controls Barbara-ian as a whole has managed to find the perfect balance between having a character who feels weighty and real, while also managing to incorporate the feeling of incredibly smooth movement. You can play with both a controller and a keyboard, and after trying both I can honestly say that both feel just as easy to learn and as natural as the other. The Sound Just like Hotline Miami, Barbara-ian’s soundtrack is catchy and never gets old. The title screen song is gold, and you’ll be singing it to yourself in the shower and on the bus. There are in-game controls for both the music and the actual sound effects of the game, and while they are a little fiddly, they work perfectly and are easy to find. The Experience What caught my eye first about this game was how hilarious the trailer was. After playing Barbara-ian, not only have I not been disappointed, I can’t wait until I can play more. Use it as a stress relief or the new flappy-bird, either way, I can definitely see this becoming one of the more popular games on the steam store. Overall Verdict 10/10 If you'd like to read more reviews from me, join my steam group!
The game is great so far! Massivley addictive goblin squashing fun that feels like a cross between Alien Breed and Hotline Miami. The game is at it's best when running through small dark dungeons encountering a few enemies only to burst through a door into a cavernous space full of swarming goblins and traps. The one hit-point gameplay really gets your heart racing in these situtations but unfortunately can cause a fair amount of frustration when you spawn into a new level directly on top of a hord or bad guys and get insta killed! Despite being a little rough round the edges Barbara Ian shows amazing promise and I can't wait for the next update. Well worth the price of half a pint!
Half woman, half man; all action. A chaotic neon soaked dungeon run. One hit and you're dead, and everything is so dreadfully dangerous. Procedural levels, ridiculous weapons, hordes of enemies; a continual cycle of death and rebirth. Bugs are present, the game feels incomplete, but there's fun to be had... on sale. Just one more "one more go".
Thank you, Rebs and Owlbear Ltd for this awesome game! ✓ Typical dungeon-like feeling where you have to loot chests ✓ Female protagonist ✓ Very catchy tune. Could definitely listen to it as a 10 hr loop :D ✓ Still in early access, but I hear they're bringing d-d-dragons in a future update! Score: 9/10
I really like the direction they went here but it's just not finished. I feel it was pushed out of early access because no more work was going to be done but it's still a very rough game. The game needs weapons removed, camera work, and bugs fixed. It's just too much to recommend in this state. I made a video: https://youtu.be/9D6zmDTv2z0
This game is difficult. This game will anger you. This game will kill you... a lot. But all the deaths and quick restarts make completing a level so satisfying! Pros:

Wonderful soundtrack
Fast-paced combat
Nice voxel graphics
Cons:

Can't switch the weapon
Sometime is too dark
This is a good indie game!
Martwa gra... Dno i kupa 2/10
