This is a very moving game concerning the ravages of time, old age, and Alzheimer's Disease. There were a lot of tense moments and many emotional ones as well. The chapters "The Abyss" and "The War" were especially intense. My only major gripe with the game is you can't save mid-chapter. You have to finish a chapter before exiting the game; otherwise, you have to replay the chapter from the beginning.
:)
Back Then is a game dedicated to those suffering from Alzheimer's and the way they, bit by bit, lose everything they are - their mind, their memories, their body. The story is deeply emotional, touching, and managed to sadden even a jaded, cynical person like myself. But it's not a game, in the true sense of the word. Rather, it's an interactive book, with 1 or 2 puzzles to solve, while most of the time you simply stroll through the memories and visions of the main character, struggling to understand what is happening. I'm not sure if I can and want to recommend it, but I also don't have objective reasons not to do so...
:)
The game centers around our character wheelin' around attemptin' to piece together his memories. The voice actin' is well done and I liek the art style. I got stuck a bit in the library. Not sure what to do there. Solid game otherwise. A nice ode to those diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Gameplay Impressions: https://youtu.be/pi0bmh7-8Ko
I loved the story line. Keep my interest. What I really didn't like was all that walking outside, it can get boring with all that walking felt like you wasn't getting anywhere. Other then that It was a pretty good game. other thing I hate mazes, but this one you can get through on your own. I like the fact the game told you what you needed to do next that was a plus.
This is not a game. This is a walking (well, wheeling) simulator. It's not fun. It just tells a sad story, painfully slowly, while you do nothing. I would pay someone to erase the memory of this experience from my mind. Irony.
It's quite a good walking sim focused on story about Alzheimer's and the finiteness of life. Excellent writing and voice acting. Sad themes. Moving is a bit slow though, especially when you have to use that stairs lift over and over again.
If you're looking for a game that'll make you cry, this is the one. Its such a beautiful, yet incredibly sad, story. I'd put it up there alongside What remains of Edith Finch as well as Dear Esther, aka one of my favorite story/walking-sim games I've ever played. Be warned tho, towards the end it gets a tad creepy, but no jump-scares or anything of the sort. An amazing game and story, truly worth playing in my opinion!
After finding time to play, it starts out in a delirious manner. I find myself understanding whats going on at the same time as the character is. With a father that had gone through dementia, so many aspects of this game is relatable and would be good for someone who hasn't had any experience with it or Alzheimers in their personal lives.
