Currently the game is playable with keyboard and mouse, controller does not seem to be working well. The story unfolds as you find yourself having previously died, but Drukandra, the God of the Dead, picked out your soul for his blessing. Your goal is to stop the evil Magrath who wishes to take over the known world of Azuran. (Hmm... Where have we heard this story before?) In order to succeed in your mission, you need to find the pieces of the Amulet of Valur before you challenge Magrath. You are pitted against foes who can easily bring you down every step of the way. The game is set up with significant combat damage every step of the way, to the point of being overwhelming. There are traps that can instantly kill you, and there are normal enemies that can easily prove Drukandra wrong in his choice to bless your soul. But your soul is stuck in the blessing, and you cannot die. You are resurrected time and time again until your quest is over. The game is set up into 15 different available levels and there is a lot of lore to follow up with in between levels. The levels are not long, but the combat is punishing. You do progressively become stronger so that even with deaths, you do not have to start over each time. You gain upgrades and abilities based on collecting four different colored shards, every 10 shards equals a potential upgrade in that category. These upgrades are permanent and you do not lose them with death. There are save points where you essentially deposit your loot so that death does not cause as much of a loss. Every death means loss of 50% of your unused shards and gold since the previous save. With a game that is heavily focused on combat, the combat unfortunately is not always clean feeling. In a game where blocking and dodging is so crucial, any clunky nature causes a hindrance to gameplay. But if this was meant to be part of the challenge, then so be it. I think this is a game designed to keep the player's interest by learning attack patterns and how to deal with. This is a good game with a good design. The artwork is beautiful, and the music is quite nice. The game plays smoothly most of the time, and you really have to learn how to fight each enemy to get by. The simplest attack from the most benign looking enemy could mean your death. I think this game is worth the asking price, I just wish full controller support is added, it would make it a lot more playable for many platformer fans.
I received the product for free. A fantastically challenging game which punishes you for every minor misstep! Expect to die - a lot. The level design is fantastic. My favourite moment was when I came out of a dungeon and was suddenly overlooking this massive forestal temple ruins that seemed like it went for miles in the background. Loads of detail was put into making the game world look good, and the end-boss level was just epic. What I read of the story was good stuff. I liked the dynamic between the paladin and the Death Goddess, though I'll admit - most of my attention went to beating the game. There is a wide variety of enemies and scenarios in which different enemy groups appear, making just about every fight feel unique. There are plenty of boss battles, and each is a different experience in dying. The checkpoints are generous and will often land you right back in the action when you resurrect. All the fights and enemies have some sort of weakness to exploit, though in your first playthrough you're often forced to throw yourself at new encounters to learn their telegraphs through merciless one-shots. It can be difficult to discern what will penetrate your shield, and there are a few tricky hitboxes on some of the bosses and traps (those damn sharks!). Dying in the early game can feel crippling as you will lose sigil shards (used for stat progression) quite often, which can lead to feeling like you're falling behind, but don't fear as the game constantly rewards you with loot piles from enemies and chests and by the end, you can easily max everything out. The controls are very easy to pick up. Once you master the aerial dodge-roll you feel super agile, and with your stamina regen maxed out you can easily outmaneuver most enemies. Vertical controls feel rigid though - especially ladder climbing and pulling yourself up from ledges, which is an integral part of almost every level. It can be a little cruel at times, as your first failed run into a new area can aggro enemies to a ledge where they will then stay, laying the beatdown in the window of vulnerability forced on you when you're yanking yourself up the side. But no matter how hard and brutal it can be, it can be done with patience and persistence! Definitely pick this up if you enjoy a challenge!
Azuran Tales: Trials is an amazing RPG action game developed by Tiny Trinket Games. It is straightforward and hart to beat, don’t expect any help as you explore all of its handcrafted levels full of lore, monsters, traps, and unique bosses. Magrath’s trickery won’t be stopped with just one or two bodies clogging the gears of his traps, so you will be forced to learn and adapt or fail and die. Drukandra, the God of the Dead and Ruler of the Underworld, found your soul worthy for his quest. After granting you his blessing, you are sent to hunt down Magrath, an entity shrouded in mystery, who wields great power and wishes to claim the world of Azuran as his own. Only by finding the hidden pieces of the Amulet of Valur can you bring this foe down. The game features 15 handcrafted levels with different environments, It is a pretty hardcore game in which dying is very easy, do not despair when you go catching the trick you will end up liking it a lot.

Azuran Tales: Trials is a fun platformer/brawler with RPG elements, but a bit rough around the edges with some bugs. To get it out of the way first, this is not a roguelike or roguelite or rogueanything. The levels aren't procedurally generated, the monsters aren't procedurally placed, and you have infinite lives, being set back to the last activated checkpoint upon death. And die you will. Along with the monsters, the levels are filled with traps of both the "heavy damage" and "instadeath" variety. Most monsters, even most of the bosses, are pretty easy to deal with 1v1 with a little practice - they have simple patterns, and you have an invincible roll and a shield that can block most attacks - just gotta keep an eye keep an eye on that stamina gauge that is used for rolls, blocking, and your own attacks (Dark Souls, anyone?) It's when you need to deal with multiple monsters at once, or while having your movement options limited by the aforementioned traps, that you may find yourself dying over and over. Most of the bosses regained all their health after killing you, but a few do not. The most troublesome ones, aside from the final boss, were the ones surrounded by minions when you first encounter them - but dead minions do not respawn, while you do. Some bosses summon minions during the fight - just need to deal with these quickly. The checkpoints are very frequent, and any monsters killed before dying remain dead. With boss fights, the checkpoints are always close by, often inside the boss arena itself. The true death penalty most of the time isn't lost progress in the level, but lost loot. Loot, in the forms of colored gem shards and gold, fountains out of murderized monsters and raided treasure chests. Collect 10 gem shards of one of a single color (red, yellow, blue or white), and they form a gem (games calls them "sigils", but come on, they're gems) which can be used to upgrade one of two passive skills of that gem's color. Find an altar, and 2 gems + 200 gold can be used to upgrade a different passive of that color. Altars also "save" whatever gold and (uncombined) gem shards you've found. Every time you die, 50% of any "unsaved" gem shards and gold in your inventory is lost. The altars are much less frequent than the checkpoints, and sometimes are are kinda deep in the background and hard to notice unless you're looking for them. I've lost quite a lot of gold and shards to deaths, and gained the habit of backtracking to the previous altar (when the level design would allow it) every time time I'd find myself carrying a decent amount of loot. By the time I reached the last level I'd fully maxed out all my passives, and all worries about death went away. The combat is all right. I already mentioned the invincible rolls and blocking with the shield. You can also simply walk past enemies between their attacks - there is no contact damage and they don't block you. You have one basic attack with your mace, and 4 activatable skills (damage buff, healing, stun, direct damage). Each skill has a color associated with it, and is unlocked once you've spent 4 upgrade points (i.e. gems) of that color on its passive skills. This should happen relatively early on, unless you've been spending all the gems with gold at altars, since the passives upgraded there do not contribute to unlocking the skill. The skills use your "conviction", and this is basically the "rage" gauge from other games that increases as you bash your opponents with your primary attacks, and then quickly decreases over time if you haven't bashed anyone in a while. I've mainly used the healing skill for most of the game, with damage buff during boss fights at times when I was at full health. The direct damage I found too expensive to use much of unless it was a boss fight already going really well, and the stun was useless against bosses (aside from doing a little damage of its own) and too expensive to use much during regular mob fights. The final boss fight I did find pretty annoying, mainly because it was pretty different from every other fight before, requiring a lot of platforming as if this was a Tiny Barbarian DX boss fight. Well, I think the proper way to fight it required a lot of platforming, but in the end, after maybe 30-40 deaths over 20-30 minutes or so, I was able to succeed with the old "roll around the boss and hit it over and over" strategy after all, only resorting to platforming when it would initiate a telegraphed AOE attack. If you quit the game or even just to title, you can level select any level you've gotten to. The treasure chests will be gone, but the enemies will be there and will still drop loot, so you can grind a bit if you want to upgrade your skills more before continuing to the next level. You may also need to revisit levels for some achievements, as some achievement granting mid bosses are optional and you may not have killed enough of some monster types for other achievements by just playing through the game once. Unfortunately you cannot only continue playing from the beginning of a level, so you may want to avoid quitting if you're well into a level, or you'll have to repeat it when you come back to the game later. The story is decent, and there is a lot of interesting lore tidbits scattered through out, that are added to your journal as you find the pages in the levels, which you can then read or ignore as you like at your leisure. I found the graphics quite pleasant, but this is no Trine 2. Game ran great on my i7-920 / GTS 1050 ti, except for one level where the framerate was constantly around 45-50fps for no apparent reason, despite GPU utilization being around 50%. I experienced no crashes, but did encounter a few annoying bugs, such as a couple places where I clipped through walls to fall to my demise, and a door that wouldn't let me through after I opened it, forcing me to restart the level. Overall, the game took me about 7 hours to beat. Someone who'd die less and doesn't bother backtracking to alters would complete it faster than me. I had plenty of fun playing it, and completed it over a few sessions on Friday and Saturday without ever feeling burned out or needing to take a break (realizing it's past 5am and I should go to bed doesn't count.) Despite dying a lot, the frequent checkpoints meant I never felt frustrated, aside from the aforementioned final boss fight.
Pros: -Can be fun -Atmosphere - Challenging Cons: - It's not polished -The objectives are not clear - A few bugs 6/10

This game was alot of small twist in platforming games and a good amount of challenges. I wasn't some god or op character which made me focus on the game alot more. loot was distrubited fairly and it made explore the area finding new things which was cool. The level up system was okay and I'm not sure if it had any effect on my character. It got buggy when i wasn't able to damage to goblins that applied the slowing condition on me out of nowhere and the my attack animation wasn't as fast as i though it would be. Most of the monsters could tank damage which I thought i could stagger them, and basic monster can one or two shot you. Monster placement was not to my liking as well as i could not get to a portal without a mob ganging up on me or two golems camping by a gate i needed to open to progress. how ever This is fun and i can't for the imporvements to be made
