I know almost nothing about the tactics of aussie rules but the game is still very very very fun. Its what football manager is to Fifa, or OOTP baseball to MLB the Show. If you care about "franchise" or a coach career mode this is definitely the game you need to pick up as opposed to AFL 23.
Big step forward from the previous release. While there are some minor kinks, it's not so bad you don't enjoy the game, Will play this game lots and already looking forward to the next instalment,
It needs some more work done to it but it is a good game. I played as Preston and had a couple of bad seasons, my team were short on stars and whoever I had of skill would leave the club after a 4-12 season, my wins came against the old VFA clubs, editing the team was tempting but had to play it seriously. The third season started having troubles, the team I selected would be different on game day which for my poor team was worse when 54 skilled players were replaced by 40 ones leading to heavier trashings. As said, it is a good game but it needs work and shorter point posts.

This game is quite engaging and interesting but I have some reservations about it. Firstly the goal is to coach your players to a high skill and compete with either computer generated or human coaches, and the problem I have is that the players "rating" or performance seems to have little relationship to the skill level they have achieved. I have had players near the highest skill level (100+) frequently gaining worst on ground performances while much lesser skilled players are rated best on ground. Annoyingly these ratings also show very little correlation with the individual player statistics (possessions, marks, tackles, HO etc). This makes me wonder whether the process of training up your players is important at all, maybe it is more about just recruiting the players with the highest potential and letting them play raw. I will persist but I have concerns.
As an ardent Aussie Rules fan, I originally had mixed feelings about Australian Football Coach. While the concept was exciting, the simulation engine left a lot to be desired. One of the biggest issues I raised was how teams with the worst attributes could still make the top of the ladder or even win the premiership. It made the game feel too unpredictable and disconnected from actual player ratings. That said, I’ve seen real improvements. The developer has clearly put in a lot of work behind the scenes—releasing regular, free roster updates and continuing to fine-tune the match engine. The recent changes have made team strength and player quality feel more impactful overall. The addition of natural skill development adds another layer of realism too, and it’s great to see the game evolving in the right direction. There’s still more to be done—the sim engine isn’t quite where it needs to be yet, and weaker teams can still overperform more often than they probably should—but I really appreciate the dedication that’s gone into improving things. It’s not just a one-and-done release; it’s a game that keeps getting better. I’m happy to give it a thumbs up and support that continued progress.
I rate this game very high, really enjoying it so far and especially how in depth it is. I wouldn’t mind some extra parts added into tactics wise and individual tactics for players (like set up a tagging role etc) (or I just haven’t figured out how to do that yet 😂) Only issues I’ve found so far is that the game will not substitute players into the game. And when you check the shortlisted players the game crashes Other than that I love the game (especially south freo oval as the background to matches)
Great game would 100% recommend
