Attack of the Karens

AotK is a 2D shoot em up (shmup) with roguelike elements that was largely made by a sole developer (sans voice acting and some promo art). The purpose of the game is to complete a run, where you defeat 4 robotic-mutated "karens" in a randomized order, leading up to the final encounter. - it has pixel art that oozes charm - it has a fantastic chiptune-esque soundtrack - the voice acting gives great personality to the characters - its humorous - the controls, gameplay, and mechanics all have a level of polish on them that you won't find even on some AAA titles - it is a complete game, with no held-back DLC or microtransactions - you progressively unlock upgrades to make your attempts and runs easier - there's a plethora of modifiers you can use to make the game easier or harder as well - it is priced modestly for the quality of the game if you're fans of shmups and roguelikes where you can just turn your brain off and attempt to finish runs of the game, you'll enjoy this

Really polished and clean game. Enjoyed the characters and dedication to the visuals. Each level switches it up to keep things interesting. Nice work!

I have a thing for obscure, weird games. It's in my middle name. Story-wise the game is hilarious, quirky and the concept is very entertaining. It's worth the price if you're looking for something light to play and I feel that the overall gameplay is similar to vampire survivors than it is a traditional shoot em up (shmup). For a shmup game, it's "alright." I would love to see just little improvements, such as gamepad/keybind re-mapping. I feel like that's a critical functionality in platformer/shmup games in general for replayability-- replayability as in achieving high scores and/or speedrunning. Another improvement that would be amazing would be the difference in color for player vs enemy bullets. Don't get me wrong, the artwork and animation are great but with the game's colors being extremely monotone, makes it hard on the eyes to establish what it is we can and cannot avoid (and I've played many shmups). Other than those two desired improvements, I would say this is worth the purchase! It's cheap. It's comedic. It's worth the $4.99. Can't wait to see what other games the devs has to offer!

Attack of the Karens takes out Earth Defense Force by Jaleco as my favorite horizontal bullet heaven shmup. I even enjoy it more than that horizontal bullet heaven CAVE shmup.. YES, I said it! Enemy bullet patterns always give you an escape route, and you can upgrade your character as well as making your enemies more powerful. The color palate is easy on the eyes. Stay Frosty!

Great game! It's challenging but not difficult. I like that the levels/bosses are randomized, it keeps the game interesting.
