I love this game! It's not really the kind of game I'd usually play but it just works so well!
A real hidden gem of a game, mysterious and compelling. I honestly can't believe it doesn't get more attention!
An interesting text adventure. You're a vessel of an ancient eldritch power proving your worth during a family competition. The game lends itself perfectly for multiple play throughs and is quite forgiving, meaning one wrong choice won't lock you in an unwanted ending. The writing is good but there are bugs in the writing. For instance, in one of my games someone was murdered but the game registered me as the culprit. Then near the end the text showed the murdered person to be walking around. These were minor issues which didn't prevent me from finishing that playthrough.
This game was a blast! I had a great time playing it on stream, and my viewers really loved it. We can't wait to play through it again to try different endings and see where the story ends up. The writing was amazing and the art was beautiful. Thanks for making such a fun game, I can't wait to see the other endings!
Really enjoyed this game, the choices felt meaningful and I enjoy needing to manage my time effectively. Most importantly I enjoyed the story. Definitely recommend
This game is very interesting, however I wish there were a more detailed walkthrough/achievement guide
November 29 Edit: I worked with the devs to locate those rare moments where
dead
characters show up where they shouldn't. I still need to do a few more checks, but most, if not all, of these instances should have been rectified in the latest update! There is also a guide in development to detail how to get the four different endings, which should help people wanting a roadmap. Super happy about these changes! Original November 16 Review: As evidenced by my playtime, I have been thoroughly enjoying At Eve's Wake for longer than most. I'm a sucker for a good visual novel, and this one was an absolute blast. I don't want to give too much away because I honestly think it's better to go in completely blind like I did; however, what I will say is this:
If you like the idea of The Hunger Games combined with Knives Out and cosmic horror, then this game is for you!
Compliments: - The plot is loads of fun and interesting - High replay value - Solid game length, especially considering the replayability factor - Good music (I genuinely never got tired of it after 22 hours) - Nice art, both background and character - Good game mechanics (i.e., for personality and dialogue choices) - Your choices matter significantly Criticisms: - Desperately needs a skip-read-text button (my arm is actually aching from rapidly clicking to skip dialogue so many times and that is also half of the reason my playtime is so long) - Quite a few typos or mistakes where
dead characters appear in scenes that they should not be in or events that didn't happen in one replay are treated as if they did (i.e., a character who is alive can be talked about as if they are dead, etc.) and times when my actions were forgotten, leading me to have to do another playthrough to make my character remember them for the true ending to unlock
- Would love to see a roadmap implemented and for it to be made clearer when you're making a permanent choice that will, quite literally, prevent you from accessing certain quests or endings - Better save system (five save slots is simply not enough for a game like this) - Sometimes my actions don't seem to have made an effect when they should have - There are a lot of characters and I wish they were more fleshed out (I still have unanswered questions about some of them) Is it a perfect game? No. Does it need some serious tweaking in areas? Yes. Nevertheless, I had a really good time and it's something I could see myself coming back to revisit in the future despite how much time I've already invested into it.
At Eve's Wake is the kind of games that makes you love a whole genre you don't enjoy otherwise; it is (with 999 and VLR) the prime example of how interactive and engaging a VN can be and is de facto the standard I'll hold the rest of similar games to. The premise is your basic funeral for your dutch granny with all the weird uncles and cousins presents, except you have zero recollection of any of them and there is a chance you might not survive it. The rest is a brilliantly writen psychological thriller, that manages to be fun and incredibly tense through only dialogue and branching narration. The art is on point, with gorgeous and expressive portraits of memorable and visually distinct characters. And the music is great and helps tremendously to build tension. I loved it!
This game is nothing that I usually play but I got it in a bundle and thought I'd give it a try. After 2 1/2 hours I have finished my first playthough and am genuinly suprised by how much I actually liked the experience. "At Eve's Wake" is based on a very interesting idea: a group pf people, separated into 5 families, each one representing a part of humanity. This group always need a leader, once the leader dies, as new one is chosen from candiates from each of the families. But the way a new familyhead is chosen can depend. It is possible to simply convice the other that you are the best choice, to play with intruiges, or to straight up kill the others so that you end up being the default winner. The beginning of the game drags out a bit, you have to be told the basic of the story, which is absolutely okay. Later you are given a huge amount of choices to push the story into the direction you want it to go. The ending also really surprised me and it seems like it is worth playing it over and over again to find out more. That being said, as much as I enjoyed the game, I wouldn't pay to full price for it, especially if you are not an avid visual novel player planning on finishing this game x times. If you are that kind of player, this game will be well worth it for you, though :)
