hot garbage, not worth money.
An odd little precision-platformer. Quirky in all respects, from the difficult ways of managing jump height, to the square aspect ratio that prevents you from reading too far ahead, to the synth music that sounds like it was written by a worm. I mean that last bit positively — the dinky, minimalist music is probably my favorite part of the package. It all feels very off-kilter in a way that will charm some and anger others. I land somewhere in the middle. It's not my favorite kind of precision platformer, but I appreciate what it's doing. This is somebody else's favorite small indie game, probably. Definitely a lot of speedrunning potential, if you're into that sort of thing. And there are a lot of settings to help you make the game more comfortable, such as removing screenshake and showing obstacle trajectories, which is always a plus.

The reviews for this game go to show that Steam reviewers should never be believed under any circumstances. At least one review has given this game's music a positive review. Unironically. So no Steam reviews, including this one, should be trusted. The music is absolutely horrendous throughout. At best it's tolerable, but that's in the second level, meaning it's all dross thereafter. I'd recommend muting and listening to your own music to improve the overall experience. Which is a shame, because the PICO-8 can produce some mellifluent noises in the right hands. What about the gameplay? It's very okay. Not brilliantly engaging, but a surprising amount is done with surprisingly little. Everything is bound to two keys/buttons, so mechanically, everything is pretty simple. Some of the levels are plain annoying, others have small sections that don't quite work as intuitively as you'd think. None of them really give that dopamine hit of a job well done. But I will say it's interesting enough, just about varied enough, and I think the difficulty is about right - any harder would have been a mistake. I did go into this massively underestimating difficulty, thinking it was going to be a cakewalk I'd 100% in about an hour. it wouldn't have taken me as long as it did were the gameplay more engaging - I did find myself switching off mentally (the music really didn't help) and then trying to force my way through it. It's one of those games that probably should be a "maybe". But I think more people than not would get just enough out of this (buying it on sale) to nudge it into the "would recommend" category
So let me start with, I'm probably not the right kind of player for this game. I've played Celeste through the summit but that's about as good as my precision platforming goes. But my problem is there's no reward. You clear a level, no matter how many stars you get, and then it's onto the next level. There's no screen saying level complete. No lore or anything in between. Just off you go to the next one.
fun little platformer with some challenge
It's a cool game for $5.
Appropriately challenging and fun little platformer with great price
Fun short speedrun platformer in Pico8. 2hr 20min, 573 deaths, 973/1000 stars. Charming art, and that 'one more try' quality. Has some neat features for getting better, letting you play levels separate from the main run, and saving at the start of a level.
