Travel Through Unfamiliar WorldsExplore a vast, dangerous, yet beautiful world. Broken up through multiple chapters, join the protagonist and Karon, his talking bird companion, as they confront time and fate.
Slashing, Smashing, thrusting countless enemies while building up stamina for powerful Possession Skills, which are enough to melt away anything that blocks your way, including huge bosses that could take half, or even more of the screen. Fight aggressively while thinking strategically, always pick up the most trust worthy equipment, and select the best suited skills to deal with ever changing circumstances.
Battle ferocious bosses throughout the story, each with their own set of attacks and challenges. Upgrading abilities and acquiring new skills are vital to finishing each battle and progressing through the protagonist’s story.
A warrior mastered ranged combat with bows and throwing knives? A mage smashing enemies with staffs and cast magic at the same time? Play it in your way. Gathering experience to level up, collecting force to grow up, forging and mastering equipment to open up more tactical options.
14 years in development and more than 1 year for revision, award-winning indie developer KEIZO gave his all into this work. The plot keeps twisting as characters growing in an ever expanding world; Classic themes like time travel and tons of spoilers are all custom-made with the developer's own style. In ASTLIBRA, Story elements are often made into game mechanics, for example, your soul-mate Karon is not just a sidekick to talk with.
With 6 difficulty options, all kinds of players can enjoy the combat system at their own pace, but no one can finish all those contents casually - even after you "beat" the game, the Postscript after Final Chapter will provide extra story, new adventure and fresh system, tapping the potential of skills, equipment, as well as your imagination.

It is quite an ambitious game that mostly nails its objectives. However, frustrating difficulty spikes and lack of QoL holds it back a little. I really liked the combat system (after you get Energy Drain) but some fights and sequences are quite maddening with lack of save points and checkpoints. This game reminds me a lot of Xenoblade 2 if it had less budget and more fan-service. Overall, I think you will have a good 110 hours (base game + DLC) as long as you know that you are getting into a fun but somewhat unbalanced 2D hack-and-slash JRPG.
This game is a hidden GEM a fun metroidvania with an AMAZING crazy anime story about time travel and gods and hidden future cities and whatnot. this game is obviously an indie, made by maybe 1 guy? it has that feel. but it's FUN. the combat is very satisfying, and progression keeps you interested and wanting to get more and more powerful as you play, pulling you along. Fun FUN writing, epic at times and funny at others. Music is GREAT. I am suprised by how great the music is.
Honestly pretty great setting, way beyond what I expected from its generic jrpg look. The scope of the world and the severity of threat grow way beyond what I expected, in away it reminds me a lot of chrono trigger in that aspect. Like one moment you are fighting some medieval monsters, another moment you are fighting mobile suite gundam. However the story was bogged down by the extremely cliche and cringy dialogs. All your low brow stereotypical anime troupes are there along with author's very apparent fetishes. If the same person did the setting, I hope they can get someone else to do the acutal writing next time and stick to their forte. Gameplay-wise it's pretty great for a side scroller, very reminacent of the ds castlevanias. If you are veteran metroidvania player or souls player I would recommend playing on the second highest difficulty, it feels just right. I did grind a bit but mainly for materials to make weapons and armor. The game incentivise you to use every single piece of equipment you get regardless of strength as they each have their own exp and can reward you with item or skill upon leveling up. The only boss I would say is really awful is ironically the first boss in the cave. My god did it take a long time to grind it down. Basically just use possession for that fight, your weapons are wet noodles against it. DW it would never be like that again later.
Best $18 I've spent on steam. Feels like a lost PS2 JRPG. Got its hooks in me immediately with the addicting combat / progression. The OST is incredible, closest I've seen to falcom quality. Great writing with characters that have charm and personality. The only thing I would have added is a classic jrpg overworld map for more immersion. Highly recommend
I bought this game solely out of boredom because it had such good reviews. This (what I'd call unknown) gem has easily become one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.
