I mean, I both do, and yet don't recommend this game. On the one hand, it is a decent RPG with an excellent DMG vibe. On the other, it feels sort of like Half Minute Hero with the combat. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but to me it is. I like Bump Combat, love Ys. I love the OG FFL games and still play through them regularly, super nice having those on my Switch. I am giving it a thumbs up, because everything is fine, I just personally do not intend to finish the game or the original version, basically leaving this same review on both. Shame really, had I played this several years ago, I likely would have absorbed it. It's not you, it's me.
Worth it big time, even at full price. I have more hours on file than shown, as I own the original black and white version of AAG as well. "Gather your party and explore an open world." They're big statements, this game looks very simple, at first glance it may look simple and shallow but as soon as you start the game up you'll find a lot of depth. You get to bring various people along with you on your adventure and some of these (most notably, the ones at the very beginning of the game) party members really modify the way you approach the game. There's a dude who can join you who's like "Yeah I'm pretty useless but check it out I'm rich af and I own an air ship so choose me" I really like the story... I don't know how to explain it it just seems to get the feel just right, maybe it's in the dialogue. The combat is really fun, at first it'll seem really easy to bulldoze but quickly it'll ramp up. So pick those allies wisely.

游戏是好游戏,就是不知道是我理解能力问题,还是提示的不够多,有个任务始终不得解法,盗贼队友任务,让我去初始城汇聚了灵气的北面,这个地方我始终找不到啊。求解!
请告诉我2P怎么控制
Repetitive, but addictive, old-school gameplay
怎么换队友啊?城镇里随便找了几个队友想换了
Artifact Adventure Gaiden DX, developed by bluffman and published by PLAYISM and Gamirror Games, is a retro-styled RPG that takes inspiration from early handheld adventures while quietly reshaping their formula through a strong emphasis on player freedom and experimentation. At first glance, its Game Boy-inspired visuals and straightforward interface suggest a simple throwback, but the game quickly reveals a design philosophy that prioritizes choice, non-linearity, and replayability over a tightly scripted experience. It is less about following a predetermined journey and more about crafting your own path through a loosely structured world. The premise centers around an impending disaster set to occur within a fixed timeframe, giving the player a broad objective without dictating how to achieve it. From the beginning, you are free to assemble a party from a variety of characters, each bringing unique abilities and strengths, and then explore the world at your own pace. There is no strict order in which areas must be visited, and quests can often be approached in multiple ways or even ignored entirely. This open-ended structure creates a sense of agency that is rare in traditional RPGs, allowing each playthrough to feel distinct based on the decisions you make. Exploration is one of the game’s most rewarding aspects. The world is filled with optional encounters, hidden opportunities, and branching questlines that encourage curiosity. Rather than guiding players step by step, the game trusts them to experiment and discover solutions on their own. This can lead to moments of genuine satisfaction when uncovering new paths or outcomes, but it also means that players who prefer clear direction may occasionally feel lost. The lack of explicit guidance is both a strength and a potential barrier, depending on one’s expectations. Combat follows a classic turn-based format, supported by an artifact system that allows for a surprising degree of customization. Equipment and abilities can significantly alter how characters perform in battle, enabling a variety of strategies and playstyles. Early on, this flexibility makes encounters feel engaging, as players experiment with different combinations to find what works best. Over time, however, the system can become repetitive, with frequent battles and limited enemy variety reducing the sense of novelty. While the mechanics remain functional throughout, they do not evolve enough to maintain consistent excitement. One of the game’s defining qualities is its replayability. A single playthrough is relatively concise, but the design encourages multiple runs to fully explore its possibilities. Different party compositions, choices, and exploration routes can lead to new outcomes, giving players a reason to return and approach the game from a fresh perspective. This structure transforms the experience into something more akin to a sandbox, where each run contributes to a broader understanding of the world and its systems. Visually, the game embraces a minimalist retro aesthetic that effectively captures the feel of classic handheld RPGs. The pixel art is simple but clear, prioritizing readability over detail, and the overall presentation is consistent with its nostalgic inspiration. The audio design follows a similar approach, providing unobtrusive background music that complements the experience without becoming a focal point. While the presentation may not stand out in terms of modern production values, it aligns well with the game’s design philosophy. Despite its strengths, the game does have its limitations. The narrative, while conceptually interesting, remains relatively understated and lacks the depth found in more story-driven RPGs. Characters serve their roles effectively but are not explored in great detail, and the overarching plot often feels secondary to the gameplay systems. Additionally, the open-ended structure can sometimes lead to a lack of direction, and the repetitive nature of combat may diminish long-term engagement for some players. In the end, Artifact Adventure Gaiden DX is a thoughtful reinterpretation of classic RPG design that succeeds by giving players the freedom to shape their own experience. Its combination of open exploration, flexible systems, and strong replay value makes it stand out within its niche, even if its simplicity and limited narrative depth prevent it from appealing to everyone. For players who enjoy experimenting with different approaches and discovering their own paths, it offers a rewarding and highly replayable adventure. Rating: 8/10
