This game asks and answers a very important question: What if Witchaven was actually good?
Witchaven adjacent, build engine, fantasy medieval inspired retro FPS heavy on the melee combat with a few ranged options. A great time for sure! Wish there was more game here. Would love a sequel or even some DLC. Thumbs up!

Slaying for glory, and for Albion!
Why is this game so good tho!
Lo, upon the horizon! Tall standeth a great title! With feel of old and looks to match. What could bring the downfall of such a title? Performance mostly, as well as a weird feel that only a botched engine could bring. Arthurian Legends should be, if there were justice, very high on the pantheon of old school shooters. It combines both novel features, mostly through being melee based with purposefully clumsy ranged combat, as well a very authentic feeling old school look and character. It has excellent pacing all the way through with a very good sense of design permeating all the way through it. Sadly, the choice of software that it was made in makes it a very hard sell, as not only is the performance absolutely woeful, the game has strange collision with items in the world. This makes Arthurian Legends a title that is mostly recommended only for the most obsessive FPS fans who are somewhat forgiving for poor performance. I normally reserve criticisms for the end of the review, but this absolutely must be confronted: This game is absolute hot garbage on a technical front. I know I sort of highlighted that above, but the engine pushing this, the 001 Game Creator engine, is really no good for 3D titles. Scroll down and look at my specs and you’ll see a reasonable setup for a 2026 PC, with a 9800X3D, an RX9070XT and 32 GB RAM. Even with this setup, the frame rate in game is absolutely all over the place. In some moments I’m getting about 120fps, but it is never stable, meaning lows in the 70s or 80s and then back up to 120 ish. Even worse are large combat arenas where the frame rate sometimes dips below 50, which in the chaos of the moment borders on unplayable. At least that is my experience with trying to play the game in Linux. Is that a Linux boast? Not really, considering I also tried it in Windows, and in Windows the game instantly crashes whenever I try to run it. From what I can tell this is an AMD GPU issue where the Windows drivers are just dead. This is not going well. Adding to the performance woes is the way that character movement is handled. A lot of game engines have a certain feel to them when the default movement is left. Unreal is sort of noticeable (though the look is more the thing that tips you off) and Unity has a strange floatyness that feels nasty if the dev does not focus on character movement. In Arthurian Legends the movement is very stiff and, for a lack of a better term, catchy. There is almost no inertia to character movement and they seem to get caught on the scenery with alarming regularity. I tended to play very cautiously as I would frequently get caught on a seemingly easy to pass wall, resulting in the character taking damage in situations that would have been far more controllable in another engine. The mouse inputs also feel off, but that may be just the frame rate. So the game performs like hot garbage and it moves and aims awful. How can this be advisable? Simple! By everything else in game being absolutely fantastic. For all its problems, the effort that went into the making of Arthurian Legends was not part of them. This was clearly a high effort game despite the engine. Hell, it is likely an even higher effort game BECAUSE of the engine! The clearest effort comes through with the aesthetic. It uses photographs as opposed to models in most cases, with real people, rotoscoped into the game as enemies. While there can be effort put into making sprites look good, putting the effort into wearing period costumes that look authentic enough to be believable is above and beyond! Everything has a distinct, focused look to it that all fits in with itself very well. The audio too feels absolutely appropriate as well, with both the sounds and the music being spot on. Oddly enough, the strange movement and low frame rate adds a certain authentic feel to the whole preceding. This game feels very 1995 or 1996. Like a lost Witchaven attempt that went nowhere. If you were to show this with a VHS filter over it and said it was a clip off an old episode of Bad Influence or Games Master I’m sure someone would easily believe you. Aesthetic and feeling old is one thing, but unless you have the design chops to back it up, then all that authenticity means nothing. Thankfully, Arthurian Legends has the guts to back up the pretty face. At the heart of it, this is a melee focused FPS title with purposefully awkward ranged weapons. In general this works well, with a vast selection of weaponry available, from single handed maces, axes and swords, to Bastard Swords, throwing axes, crossbows, short range explosives and other such things. They all fit a certain niche in the arsenal, which is impressive considering the melee focus, and most have durability as a form of ammo. To match these weapons are a nicely varied lineup of mooks to slaughter, ranging from the regular Saxon soldiers, archers, strange gargoyles that spit elemental damage, all the way to the weird and wonderful late game mythical beasts and skeletal liches. The rostra is balanced well enough to make the combat exiting, but also limited enough with their capabilities that the ranged weapons never become essential. Complementing this all is a range of spells. These tend to work like Build engine items, and range from offensive spells, deployable traps and eventually consumables items like healing and buffing spells. All this combat would be meaningless if there were no good arenas to use them in, and Arthurian Legends’ level design is by far its strongest area. Not only is it incredibly varied in its locales, the standard key and switch based progression feels very well thought out. While the trope is well worn, the way the levels twist and turn while also feeling like actual places impresses greatly. There is just enough back tracking mixed with a variation in routes, all filled with secrets makes for arguably the best level design for any 2021 FPS! To summerise, Arthurian Legends is a very well made melee FPS. It is one of the best designed games of its style that could absolutely fool you into thinking it is a Build Engine game from 1996. The core concern is it runs like a Build Engine game on a 1996 PC. For some, the performance issues will be too much, but if you can weather the poor frame rates, Arthurian Legends is a legend in itself! Much advised!
Great (but a little buggy) dungeon crawl FPS. Nicely challenging on Hail to the King, and with good enemy and weapon variety to make encounters fun. You will have to constantly be moving through your weapons to deal with different situations, and everything on the weapon bar has a use. Finding secrets that permanently improve your character also helps to keep things moving, and incentivizes exploring the well made environments. The bugs are the obvious problem, but you can get around them (most of mine were fixed once I started running it in windowed mode).
