Dropped the game 2 years ago, forced myself to play from start and finish it this afternoon which took ~2h. It would be fine as a curiosity for less than 5euros, but not at 30! Aside from the price, the game is pretty bad due to a simple reason: classic castlevania controls do not blend with micro-spacing You have 7 stages with a boss at the end, then the 8th stage being bosses only. Stages themselves are way too easy with repetitive screens (and some of them are entirely skippable due to a flight mechanic); meanwhile bosses are a mess. Bosses attempt to go for more "bullet-hell" like patterns, but due to the rigid controls of a classic castlevania, you can't reliably dodge, so instead you have to rely on the i-frames for being touched by a low damage attack and then bruteforce your way through.
love how the game throws the hardest boss at you first.
The main claim to fame of Koumajou Remilia aka "Touhouvania", long before it was even thought that it would get on Steam (the original version is from 2009), are the superb character designs: "What if Ayami Kojima designed the Touhou cast?" So many years later, those alternate designs of Reimu, Marisa & co. still rock. Funnily enough, before Frontier Aja themselves gave a translation through a patch back then, it was thought to be possibly darker than the source material but once confronted with the actual dialogue, it's not the case. Even Remilia's doomsday plan is resolved with a slap on the wrist. When it comes to the actual game, however, there is much less to be enthusiastic about. It feels like the developers, wanting to mix Touhou with classic Castlevania, didn't have a clear idea of how to do it, resulting in a superficial implementation of aspects from both franchises. Therefore you got Reimu who has very floaty jumps and whose flying, while useful at times, isn't exactly great to control as she can't even change the direction she faces during flight, on top of allowing to easily skip many obstacles. The level design is bland, with several rooms that are copy-pasted, especially visible in the arena level. Enemies are simply Castlevania classics with a few fairies mixed in. And worst of all, boss fights have danmaku with a gameplay not built for them. You have to count on the slide and dodge maneuvers and even so, the bullet volleys in such restricted boss arenas are so hard to dodge, they can easily force to tank some damage. Music is great, including some almost "obvious" remixes of classic Castlevania tracks, and the dub added in this version is excellent, after all it's veterans like Miyuki Sawashiro, and all the VAs that worked on the sequel back in the day are back here, with the addition of Aoi Yuki as Cirno doesn't appear there. The graphics suffer from a zoomed-in view (it's like they were originally conceived to have a larger view and smaller sprites), it looks heavily pixelated, blurry and cramped, which also negatively affects gameplay - sometimes the flight is necessary to avoid certain leaps of faith. Reimu's animation is excellent but I can't shake the impression it's outright traced from Alucard in Symphony of the Night, as are some enemies like the minotaurs. I liked a few inserts of 3D in the mostly 2D graphics (like at the entrance of the castle), which reminds me of the earlier 2.5D games of the 32-bit era. In the end, Koumajou Densetsu is little more than a curiosity, and its base price really too much for what it offers. At least the sequel improves most of what went wrong here.
I bought this game not knowing it was a Touhou game, so the bullet hell aspects (Even if they're not as bad as they really are) made this game way harder for me than it needed to be. That being said, everything else about it is fine. The fighting and movement is good, if the controls are kinda funky, the level design is basic but passable, but the music kicks ass. On sale, it'd say it's worth it. But if you don't like Bullet Hells or are expecting a modern Castlevania game, don't get this. It's more classic, which is fine, but the bullet hell aspect of the bosses kill it for me.
WTF WAS THIS GAME LMAO?! Look I don't wanna be negative but this game isn't that amazing. i know how castlevania games go but this was kind of whatever - The controls are too floaty making you lock between flying when you just want to jump multiple times - Buncha stuff coming at you. I know this is coming from a franchise that's focuses on danmaku but i can't freaking move because there's too many enemies on the screen - Wtf was the point of the bosses having danmaku if you can't even dodge them?! Only way to beat them is to just bruteforce spamming attacks and by that nature already makes the game boring because the boss fight ends too quickly. It even ruins the climax of the final bossfight because it's literally just button mashing till you win Anyways, no hate to the devs of the game. Making a game is a lot of work so I have to respect that. I like the artstyle they're going here and the concept is just what you expect but the execution is bland. I know the 2nd game is better and only played this first because i want to know how it starts off. If you want to play this game just for completion, go ahead but if you want to play this game for fun it's just not that worth it man... Get the 2nd game or somthing idk. Again no hate towards the devs. I'm sure they improved better from this game so good luck to them for future projects
