Think 'Shadow Empires' but card based. The hex grid battlefield may seem limited in size, but first of all, it's an option you can control and most importantly it keeps the game from becoming too complex or overwhelming. Can't think of a better game to play before diving into the depth that Shadow Empire has. It is clear that Armageddon Empires is a key, clear inspiration for that later stellar title. The post-apocalyptic setting is all the rage - but this game was on it from the first. And please, if the first steps/learning how to set up your bases and compose/move your armies - take my word for it - that initial learning curve is brief and not nearly as steep as it seems! And so worth it. Please consult the manual as the interface/UI is somewhat 'old school', but in a really logical way once you understand it. Brings back great memories - for me this is an all time classic - a hundred hours plus back in the day. So wonderful to see Cryptic Comet on Steam! - Please, Please, Please bring SOLIUM INFERNUM - similar excellent mechanics - but set in Hell, competing for dominance with other demons/dark angels - to Steam! That's another all timer - and one I cherish even more. Probably several hundreds of hours into that one. It's just a masterpiece - from the art to the game-play to the randomness - there's never been a game like it - that could hold a candle to its depth in terms of exploring the depths of religious and spiritual figures - and even more changeability and chance and fascinating turns of chance/fortune.
highly addicting be careful!!
This one scratched an old itch. A blast from the past :) I must say I love the music and game, but the interface is still as clunky as it was ages ago. I hope Cryptic Comet will sell other old titles on Steam as well? Solium Infernum ? Pretty please? With cherry on top?
Well I have had this since the day it got mentioned in PCGamer by Kieron Gillen. It has been on my Hard Drives across multiple PC's. This is one of the Greatest independent strategy games out there and it was a loss to the gaming community when the developer stopped making games. I can't praise this game enough it packs a whole lot of strategy in a few hours game play, and that's one of it's many benefits as well as seamlessly integrating card mechanics by creating your own themed decks in the same format as MTG. Then it's got the 4X of exploring, stealth mechanics where the enemy can be in the same hex and you wouldn't know. Heroes with special abilities and can command units by creating armies. Land and Air combat, Psychic attacks. Four completely different factions each having their own unique cards. I could go on and on with the intricacies of having buildings that level up, where Heroes can create special cards that can attach to units or aid in combat. Top notch AI no cheating. It's old, it's clunky, it's the best game I have ever owned.
Excellent tabletop style game which creates a strong atmosphere of harsh survival in a doomsday setting where you develop your empire to grow and thrive as all around you are the results of generations of greed, incompetence and mismanagement littering the wasteland of a cursed decimated world where murderous human exterminating machine factions and mutant abominations roam. If you like your tabletop gaming with dice rolls which add the balanced realism of randomness this game will satisfy as i have yet to get dice rolls which lean too much on the ai's or my empires side. Gameplay is rich with card play which are nicely detailed with beautiful art work. You use them for different advantages while you explore the wasteland for technological relics and precious resources to keep your empire going. Along the way you will come across missions where you may end up with new followers or have to locate a fellow officer who was taken prison in that skirmish you just lost. Ui was a little confusing to get into at first due to having to click in certain areas at certain points when deploying new units etc. Thanks to gameplay videos on Youtube i was able to figure out the ui which was not as complicated as it seemed. Here is a link to David Stark's video with some very easy to understand game play showing how to use the user interface to get things done in the game- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbtwfkmzUK0 If you like ARMAGEDDON EMPIRES there have been at least two unofficial sequels LAST DAYS OF OLD EARTH and the recently released SHADOW EMPIRES both from the masters of war games SLITHERINE. ARMAGEDDON EMPIRES, Buy it! Play it! ROLL THE DICE and find your SALVATION or DOOM!!!
I racked up a ridiculous time on this before it arrived on Steam. Old school, oddly charming board-game style strategy. Get through the clunky interface and you'll find a deep and detailed game with extreme replayability. The enemy AI is surprisingly lively and makes use of all tools available- expect to find recon units spotting for airstrikes, or infiltrators with briefcase nukes. Strongly recommend.
I played this way back in 200...8? And am so happy to see it finally on the Steam store. Fantastic game and well worth the price! Works great on my Dell XPS 13 machine.
Honestly one of the best strategy games ever made with incredible AI opponents. It's old with a steep learning curve and a really idiosyncratic interface and controls. But if you can get past that, it truly is one of a kind.
Cool ideas and neat art, but the gameplay is unnecessarily clunky and unsatisfying, and it doesn't run well on modern machines.
This is a very solid strategic game. Go watch a youtube video intro (for the basics), then start playing. You will have a lot of fun, trust me.
