Peak military shooter, even Bohemia can't top it in 2026. Warfare genuinely might be the single greatest game mode in any shooter ever. No nostalgia, i am brand new to A2, this ♥♥♥♥ is still the absolute goat of realistic military shooters.
This was fun getting through with friends, it's ARMA so you know what you're getting yourself into.
I’ve spent some time with this game and honestly, it surprised me in a way I didn’t fully expect. I don’t want to sound dramatic, but there’s something oddly satisfying about how everything fits together — not in some perfect, polished “advertisement” way, but more like a game that knows exactly what it wants to be and just… goes for it. The first thing I noticed is the atmosphere. Every part of the game — the visuals, the sound, the pacing — kind of blends into this feeling that you’re actually inside its world, even if you’re just casually playing. I know that sounds a bit cliché, but it’s true. Sometimes it’s chaotic, sometimes slow, sometimes you’re just wandering around thinking “ok, what now?” but that’s honestly part of the charm. The game doesn’t try to rush you unless it actually needs to. Gameplay-wise, it has this mix of familiar elements and small twists that keep things from feeling stale. Nothing groundbreaking, maybe, but it all works together in a way that feels natural. There were moments when I thought “yeah, I’ve seen this in other games,” but then the game throws in tiny details or unexpected interactions that make it stand out just enough. It’s the kind of thing you only notice after a few hours, when you start connecting the dots. Performance has been mostly fine. A little rough spot here and there, but honestly, show me a game these days that doesn’t have something weird happening once in a while. Nothing game-breaking on my end, at least. You can clearly tell the developers put effort into this, even if a few edges are still a bit sharp. Again — part of the charm. What I really appreciate is that the game gives you space to play the way you want. Some people will rush through every objective, others will take their time exploring or messing around, and both approaches actually feel valid. I like games that don’t punish you for not following some “correct” path. Overall, I’d say this is one of those titles that grows on you the longer you play. It doesn’t try too hard to impress in the first five minutes — instead it slowly builds its identity, layer by layer, until you suddenly realize you’ve been playing way longer than you planned. If you’re looking for something that balances comfort with challenge, familiar mechanics with fresh touches, and a world that’s just fun to be in, then I genuinely think this one is worth giving a shot. Would I recommend it? Yeah, I would — maybe not to everyone, because no game is for everyone, but definitely to anyone who likes getting lost in a game for a bit and discovering things at their own pace.
I bought Arma X: Anniversary Edition, but this review also includes the original Arma 2 (A2). I play without any mods. I'll update this review if I spend more time in A2. If Bohemia Interactive (BI) doesn't support its old games anymore, then it should make them completely free-to-play (and it should include all the downloadable content for free). A2 is an improvement over Arma: Gold Edition, but it has many problems, errors, and limitations to be a "hardcore and realistic war simulator". Some examples (let me know about earlier 3D games with these features): Action Quake 2 (98) has the SIG Sauer SSG 3000 rifle with reloading animations (including the moving bolt). Call of Duty: United Offensive (04) lets you mount machine guns not only while being prone almost anywhere, but also in specific areas of maps while standing or crouching, and while riding vehicles. Counter-Strike has detachable sound suppressors since the beta 6.5 (00). Delta Force (98) lets you fire weapons that have backblast while being prone (it's possible in reality as long as nothing is behind the weapon; neither DF1, nor A2 have damage from backblast), and has dual rendering for telescopic sights (and Comanche: Maximum Overkill (92) has dual rendering as the Target Acquisition System camera display/target display). Delta Force 2 (99) has wind (which is only decorative in A2) that affects trajectory of bullets, and telescopic sights that can be adjusted for range (magnification doesn't reset). Delta Force: Black Hawk Down (03) also lets you adjust the mechanical sight of the M203 grenade launcher for range (very enjoyable to shoot). But not all sights that can be adjusted for range in reality can be adjusted in A2. Sights can't be adjusted for windage in A2. GoldenEye 007 (97) lets you dual wield weapons and "cook" grenades (in reality, it's done by removing the pin and releasing the lever while still holding the grenade in your hand for a second or less). Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (02) lets you enter or exit a vehicle by opening or closing its door, take almost any seat near a window, turn out, and shoot almost all guns. Revs (85) has a working clutch pedal and a manual transmission. The Need for Speed (94) has a working handbrake. The Stalin Subway (05) has ricocheting bullets that can injure you. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear (99) has usable gun safeties. WinBack (99) has an additional cartridge in the chamber (only the Benelli M1014 has this feature in A2). Winning Run (88) has working mirrors. Yet this "simulator" doesn't have any (except the cartridge in the chamber) of these features above. You can kill enemy medics (even unarmed ones and regardless of their actions) and destroy ambulances (regardless of their actions) and hospitals without any penalties. Enemy computer players (bots) can do the same. Reloading animations are very outdated. Slides of pistols now move and lock to the rear, but the Navy SEALs mod (97) for Quake already had fully animated, reloadable weapons (and moving slides), and the Firearms mod (00) for Half-Life already had non-empty (tactical) reloading animations. You can't kill two enemies with one bullet from the Barrett M107. No co-pilots, hand-to-hand combat, RDG-2B smoke grenades for the OpFor, anti-personnel mines, booby traps, melee weapons, stun grenades, and incendiary/thermobaric weapons/ammunition. You can't shoot or throw grenades while running, jump, or interact with bots by using a microphone. Misaligned sights. The M1014 reloads unrealistically fast (8 cartridges in around 3 seconds). Weapons should have performance and sounds like in reality. Reloadable RPG-18s, M18 grenades with blue and orange smoke colors, and Glock 17s that accept Beretta 92 magazines aren't realistic. Only M1A2 Abrams tanks have loaders (however, they only use machine guns). Loader players could have pressed buttons or played a reloading mini-game (similar to that in World of Shooting (24)) to operate guns. Female civilians can't pick up and use weapons, sit, go prone, walk while crouching, and drive many vehicles regardless of their in-game skill level, even though various armed groups around the world have always had female fighters in reality (I know that men are better fighters because of biology). The slowest 2004 Škoda Octavia 1.4 has a top speed of 170 km/h in reality, but it has a top speed of 101 km/h in A2 (it can't go any faster). Gameplay balance doesn't belong in hardcore and realistic simulators at all. Crashing the HDT M1030M1 JP8 motorcycle into a hard obstacle at 85 km/h will only result in a damaged wheel, other minor damages, and minor injuries (the "extended armor" is disabled). Some vehicles have unusable seats. Unlike planes and helicopters, land vehicles in A2 are very easy to control like in a casual driving game. More problems: No official in-depth guide that explains everything about A2. BattlEye is controversial. The best anticheat is a competent administrator of a user-created dedicated (or LAN) server. Quantity over quality. Very few people still play the multiplayer mode. BI can make the multiplayer mode much more populated by creating official servers and gifting various content (games, DLCs, etc.) to players who play on these servers. DLCs have installation problems (now everything is installed on my PC) and inconsistency. For some reason, the Arma X collection, British Armed Forces and Private Military Company DLCs are listed as separate games in my Steam library, but the Army of the Czech Republic DLC isn't. Performance issues. Frame rates drop even on very low settings. Many players also report other technical problems. Red flashes during the "You died" screen are annoying. No content from previous games. Not vegan friendly. BI should have used system requirements of premium PCs of 2009 instead of common PCs during the development of A2. https://www.crn.com/slide-shows/components-peripherals/222003039/the-top-10-pc-components-of-2010 https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-roundup,2297.html A2's page. Scroll down to system requirements. It's better for people to make their own free games, software, websites, and guides. Terry A. Davis made his own operating system (TempleOS) alone.
