Arden's Wake

[h1]Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2[/h1] Allumette is one of my favorite VR cinematic experiences, so I had to buy Arden's Wake to thank Penrose Studios for that gem. Arden's wake is also a very good cinematic experience, that I do recommend. It's a less than 30 minute long, purely cinematic experience (stereo 360). There are no interactions. It is running on the Unreal Engine. Unfortunately, although I did enjoy the cinematics and it has a lovely story, it is also not a complete story. It does end rather abruptly. Also, you can tell that this project is a few years old. The visuals aren't as sharp as the newer VR cinematic projects that have come out recently. While Alicia Vikander does star and she does a great job, they also don't give her or the other Voice Actors much dialogue to work with. Most of the story is told through the visuals and music. The visuals are nice (other than it isn't high resolution) and the set pieces are wonderful. The animations are otherwise top-notch and the musical soundtrack is great. I do think the sound mix was a bit muffled. I was also just expecting more dialogue. Still, the story is very emotional. The experience just doesn't feel fully realized. Which is a shame, because I really wanted to see where the story was going. It has a good premise and I hope maybe one day we get to see where this goes. Maybe it can be a full VR movie. As it stands though, it's a very good VR cinematic experience, but a notch below the best VR cinematic experiences. That was disappointing for me because I did have high expectations for this project. Still, I think it's a must buy for any VR cinematic fan. [b]Rate 7.5/10. Works on WMR. But story is very short and very weak. Better check Gloomy Eyes - it's the same, not a game, just a short VR 3d movie, but has a better story.

It's just a short, movie. No it's not some deep story line with fully enriched character development, ok? It's just a fun film which we could get more of if you all would support works like this.

Amazing. I can understand why it won awards, although I don't know why we had to wait 3 years to be able to watch it! It's a great story presented in a really immersive way. Take a look at Allumette if you want to get a general idea for the style of it, but this is far better.

Bewertung: 9/10 Eindruck: "Arden's Wake VR" ist absolut beeindruckend! Ich habe noch nie so viele Emotionen in einer VR-Erfahrung gezeigt und tatsächlich ein paar Tränen vergossen. Die Geschichte ist so packend und berührend, dass sie mich vollkommen in ihren Bann gezogen hat. Die Erzählweise schafft es, eine tiefe emotionale Verbindung zu den Charakteren aufzubauen. Sprache: Das Spiel ist leider komplett auf Englisch, was für manche ein Hindernis sein könnte. Aber trotz der Sprachbarriere konnte ich fast alles verstehen und die emotionale Wirkung hat keineswegs darunter gelitten. Grafik: Manche Texturen sind unscharf, was ich aber nicht schlimm fand. Es hat der insgesamt fantastischen Atmosphäre keinen Abbruch getan und beeinträchtigt das Erlebnis nicht wesentlich. Preis-Leistung: Der Preis ist absolut in Ordnung für das, was geboten wird. Für die emotionale Tiefe und die Qualität der Erfahrung lohnt sich jeder Cent. Es ist eine beeindruckende Reise, die man nicht verpassen sollte. Fazit: Danke für diese großartige Erfahrung! "Arden's Wake VR" ist ein Meisterwerk in der Welt der VR-Erlebnisse. Ich hoffe, dass in Zukunft mehr solcher bewegenden Geschichten entwickelt werden. Bitte mehr davon! Arden´s Wake von dem bekannten Studio Penrose, das auch die beiden Animationsfilme The Rose and I und natürlich Allumette veröffentlicht haben, ist nun endlich nach jahrelanger Verzögerung auf Steam gelandet. Der kurze 30 minütige Kurzfilm erzählt die dramatisch traurige Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die einst durch ein tragisches Unglück ihre Mutter verlor. Sie ist dann bei ihrem liebevollen aber strengem Vater großgeworden, bis dieser bei einem Tauchgang einen Unfall erleidet und nicht wieder auftaucht. Auch durch schrauben an der Supersamplingrate, konnte ich leider keine Verbesserungen erzielen. Die Geschichte ist aber sehr gut erzählt und die Kamerafahrten sind langsam und verursachen bestimmt keine Motionsickness. Geht man etwas näher an das Geschehen heran, dann fällt die miserable Auflösung auch nicht zu sehr auf. The short 30 minute short film tells the dramatically sad story of a young woman who once lost her mother to a tragic accident. She then grew up with her loving but strict father, until he suffers an accident during a dive and does not reappear. So afterwards ... On the journey down, the viewer learns the true events of the disaster that befell the main character's mother and gets a rough picture of the environment in which the story is set. Unfortunately the film shows its age, the resolution is so low that I wanted to switch off after only 3 minutes. Even by adjusting the supersampling rate, I could not achieve any improvement. However, the story is very well told and the camera movements are slow and certainly don't cause any motion sickness. If you get a little closer to the action, the miserable resolution is not too noticeable. The viewer can move freely in his VR zone anyway and view the scenarios from all angles. Due to the poor resolution, the film is rather something for people who want to have seen all of Penrose's films. The narrative of the film is very well thought out, but the image dulls the mood and a film is ultimately something for the eye. No recommendation just an informative. Beautiful story. It reminded me to spend more time with those who I love, and appreciate people while they're in my lives. Stunning short story. Would love to see where she goes from here.

A nice, if rather sad, story told as a short diorama-like volumetric movie - a style I particularly enjoy. [b]Positives:[/b] [list] [*]Many nice visual ideas. I also rather like the small background touches like the looming skyscraper ruins underwater that imply details about the world we see. [*]Generally, a lot of nice little details I enjoyed immensely, even something as little as the particle effects behind the running engines, etc. [*]A lot is conveyed through actions / no overreliance on exposition. [*]Good voice acting, though some parts relied overly on smaller filler noises, whose frequency could have been reduced in some instances. [*]Some of these nice moments that 360°/volumetric movies are so good at providing, where the viewer's movements are naturally implied through salient elements, leading the viewer to e.g. look up to or turn with the encircling dragon. These moments always lead to an interesting immersive experience for me, especially when my own, voluntary body movements enhance the scene and the emotions it is trying to convey. I actually would have liked even more elements like this, e.g., the dragon's attacks could have come from a higher angle. [*]I rather enjoyed the music, though in my opinion, even more could have been done with the sound distortion when the viewer sinks underneath the waters. If this had a stronger impact on the background music, I rather think, this could have led to rather striking results. [/list] [b]Negatives:[/b] [list] [*]Some emotional moments could have used a little more room to breathe, especially the sinking of the ship at the end of the memory portion. Additionally, it is a focused experience, which is not really negative, but I always hope that in a medium where I move around and choose what to concentrate on, that I can find details that would not be apparent from the "normal" perspective. [*]The near clipping plane could have been reduced a little. There were e.g. subtler details like water droplets on the character's skin that I tried to see up close, but when I approached too closely, the camera clipped into the models. [*]Some textures' resolution was a little on the lower side and some things achieved through deformation might have been better served through detail modeling efforts. [*]Maybe this was just my setup (Valve Index controllers), but I could not start the movie through a button press on my controller - so I had to awkwardly press a button on my keyboard. [/list]

Amazing, very cool scenery. Interesting story, would love to see a continuation to this.

Liked this. Overpriced thought for a 20 minute non-interactive game.
