Inspired by chess, but adding combat that YOU control, Archon was the original Battle Chess. You must try to outmaneuver your opponent using teams of fantasy creatures or monsters in this epic struggle of Light and Dark.

additive and down to earth 2d game
Loved the NES version back in the day, this just builds on it. Great game. People expecting this to be Chess or Chess-like are in fora system shock. Try it, it's fun. Best played with a controller. I use a PS5 controller with Steam Controller Input enabled. Works fine.
Just bought the game. Will not load.
Wanted to love it. I still have a classic version with some old games I go back to play with Dosbox. Unfortunately this game doesn't work on a modern Win-10 PC. Locks up before even starting. Months ago, when I bought it, I remember being able to at least get into the menus before it froze. But today when trying a fresh install (everyone deserves a chance to fix an incompatibility) It won't even start. "archon.exe isn't responding". You'd think that a remaster would be playable on a newer machine.
Great game. Very fun and immersive. An improvement over the original, for sure. Units have secondary attacks, and the battlefield is much larger. My only gripe is that the controls are very awkward and take a lot of getting used to if you're playing with a keyboard. If they allowed point-and-click attacks, it would help, but you're stuck with directionals and a fire button that orients your projectile according to whichever directional(s) you're holding down, just like in the old days. Definitely an opportunity to hone your skills with WASD or the arrows. Also, IMO the dark side seems a bit OP, but I'm sure that's been a point of controversy for a while with all versions of this game. I'm sure a lot of people would say people who think that just don't know how to use the light side effectively, which can be a fair critique. However, the wizard's secondary attack is self illusion, which creates a false secondary character, which only works against a human opponent. You can forget fooling the computer with it. Conversely, the sorceress has the lightning attack as a secondary, which is universally effective, so the 2 spell-casters are not balanced if you're playing against the computer. Also, the basilisk can create 2 smaller versions of itself. If friendly fire is turned off, this can become a seriously challenging foe for most. Lastly, the phoenix seems to be nothing more than a banshee that leaves an admittedly useful fire trail, and the light side only gets one, whereas the dark side gets 2 banshees. It seems as though the phoenix is supposed to be a counter to the dragon, but they are not at all balanced, IMO. Maybe I just haven't played the game enough. Probably true. Overall, a fun stroll down memory lane and a genuinely entertaining game.
GARBAGE. Locks up before start level one. I waited long time on loading screen. Total crap. Fix this nonsense. I want my money back. DOES NOT WORK. repeatedly tried with patience and hope.... Always same thing. Boooo!
Fun and addictive game.
This is a game from my childhood on the Apple II gs. Love the 1v1 game play and strategic "chess" like style. So much fun to be had.
Classic old-school game. Worth the $10 for a trip down memory lane.
