Always-online DRM. In a game that is barely playable online. I really like this game. Played both on arcade and PS3. But I won't accept this DRM nonsense. Not to mention bugs in this port. I will vote with my wallet and try to refund it.
just emulate it lmfao
Most bungled port of the decade, delay based netcode aside Clearly an emulation wrapper for the ps3 version, but lobbies are buggy and broken, some characters (Konomi) can crash the game, some stuff isn't translated(??), can't be run in offline mode, doesn't run at 60FPS depending on graphics settings, etc. Really disappointing as a fan of the game
EDIT: OK, i finally played the online and I found a huge problem. When I played the online with a friend we weren't allowed to jump (made us do BC attacks instead) and our buttons were automatically mapped wrong. Also it doesn't seem to boot on my other PC for some mysterious reason, which runs Windows 11. I'm keeping my recommendation as positive anyway since my experience with this game on my usual PC is no different than my experience on PS3, which is good for the most part. Posititves: + They recently fixed a bunch of glitches + They removed the always-online DRM + Plays like AquaPazza should, generally + Crisp HD sprites + Complies with the steam inputs settings nicely, allowing my favorite PS3 fightstick to work Negatives - No players online. I guess you could call it a Discord game or even a Parsec game. Otherwise I can't judge the online since I'd have to get a friend to play it with me. - I can't seem to get keyboard controls to work. I'm able to advance past the title screen but nothing else. - (new) online is super glitchy. I wasn't allowed to jump, instead doing BC attacks whenever I pressed up. BC was also mapped what should have been my C button. Notes * Buying this is easier than emulating it, but since you'll probably be using Parsec for net play anyway, there may be no reason to not emulate it * I heard there was a glitch involving Konomi's back grab crashing the game. I have not seen it yet, but I don't know how it ever was done. There's a chance they have patched that out too. * AquaPlus did NOT develop this game in the first place. It was Examu, now known as Team Arcana. It's moreso a licensed game with AquaPlus characters. I don't really understand why they didn't bring them back to at least supervise the porting process. * In their announcement discussing the February patch they said they were planning to add rollback. I'm a little hesitant to say whether I think that'll work out for them and if they can manage to even bring in more online players to test that. Overall: If you tried this game in the Fall of 2025 and were dissatisfied in the state it was in, it may be a good time to give it a second chance. Just don't get it for its native netplay.
AQUAPAZZA: Aquaplus Dream Match — Tag-Team Nostalgia That Still Slaps (Mostly Offline)
“Aquaplus all-stars, partner assists, mood swings that buff your damage—great couch chaos, if you can forgive a very 2011 approach to online.”
[1] Intro :
This Steam release dusts off a cult favorite: a 2D fighter where Utawarerumono, To Heart 2, White Album, and more collide. You pick a main fighter and a partner character for mid-match assists, then push momentum with the series’ quirky Active Emotion System (your character’s “mood” boosts or nerfs offense/defense and even changes some super animations). It’s a celebration of Aquaplus history that long-time fans are thrilled to finally play off the old PS3—complete with familiar terrorizers (yes, Tamaki still mauls people and Chizuru still jump-scares neutral). The vibe from players is consistent: offline, it rules.
[2] Game Experience :
In the ring, AQUAPAZZA is an anime fighter with strong ground game. Controls are simple—light/medium/heavy + assist—yet the system rewards assertive play. Build meter, call partner assists to extend pressure, and cash out with big, lovingly animated Splash Arts. When Active Emotion turns “red,” you feel it: more hit-stop for routes, faster meter gain, meatier hits. There’s also an optional Simple control scheme that lets newcomers jump in without labbing motion inputs for hours. Modes are classic arcade fare—Story, Versus, Training, Score Attack, Online, Gallery—but be aware: there’s no deep tutorial, so you’ll learn by labbing or watching the community. The elephant in the room is online play. Netcode is delay-based with no rollback, and reviews widely report that it’s only tolerable with very close opponents; otherwise, it’s a slideshow. The PC port is serviceable but sparse: limited graphics options (1080p list, no AA), some UI quirks (missing button icons, Japanese names in parts of Story), and a few input headaches (many users had to force Steam Input/XInput for sticks and hitboxes). On the bright side, people report solid performance on Steam Deck and Linux once configured, and the variable frame pacing actually mirrors how the arcade/PS3 original behaved—odd, but faithful. Bottom line: if you’re here for local sets, lab time, or single-player, you’ll have a good time; if you want ranked grind across continents, temper expectations.
[3] Pros and Cons :
(+) You’ll Love:

Partner/assist gameplay that opens fun pressure and conversions.
Active Emotion System adds personality—damage/defense/meter swing with your “mood.”
Splash Arts are big, stylish finishers that feel great to land.
Simple controls help new players jump in fast.
Runs well on Deck/Linux for many after basic setup; faithful to the original’s feel.
(-) You Might Dislike:

No rollback; delay-based netcode feels rough beyond local regions.
Barebones PC options (limited resolutions, no AA; some missing UI niceties).
Input setup quirks—often need Steam Input/XInput for certain controllers.
Light onboarding—no robust tutorial; you’ll learn via Training/community.
A few quality-of-life misses (e.g., no in-menu Quit, no Steam Cloud per reports).

[4] Final Thoughts / The Verdict :
As a couch fighter and nostalgia showcase, AQUAPAZZA still cooks: assertive, assist-driven scrap with a cool mood system and flashy enders. As an online game in 2025, it’s plainly dated. If your plan is weeknight locals, labbing routes, and story runs, this is easy to recommend. If your heart is set on smooth netplay with strangers, wait for a sale—or for a miracle patch. Verdict: Recommend for offline fans and Aquaplus diehards. Great fun on the sofa; shaky across the ocean.
Good game. Very barebones but serviceable port, works totally fine, although with the same terrible netcode from PS3 (lets be real, nobodys playing this online in two weeks no matter how good the netcode is) The problem is ALWAYS ONLINE DRM. DONT BUY THIS GAME. DONT ENCOURAGE THIS. Half the reason I bought this was to be able to easily play out of the house whenever I want, and that's impossible.
This game not only broke my friend's controller, but was also unplayably laggy, glitched heavily so there were flashing images and broken glitchy messes of menus, and would not respond properly to any attempts to remap with Steam Input. Genuinely, I love the game itself. I wish this version was a playable version and not a cheap, broken port. I just... wish they actually tried.
Completely destroyed my controller support on Steam. Game glitched out while trying to play online. Having seen the negative reviews, my expectations were low. I was expecting crap but "at least it's something". This is. Unplayable.
