A decent story, decent combat, excellent setting and classic art style come together to create a pretty good game. 7/10
It's nothing to write home about, but it's fairly short and satisfying throughout. [unfortunately quite buggy and may crash a lot though]
I bought this game for the art, but then the art turned me off. Playing on the side of an ancient grecian jar was fun in theory, but after a few hours the monotone environments and characters exhausted me. The game does it's best to add variety, but there's only so much that can be done. Gameplay is fun enough, but cheesable to the point that it didn't immerse me. S.W.O.T. (Strengths, Weaknessess, Opportunities, Threats) Strenghts - Clear art direction. - Intuitive gameplay pitch. - Clear narrative. Weaknesses - Monotone environments and characters. - Cheesable gameplay. Opportunities - Tightening up the gameplay would go a long way to make the game more enjoyable for longer. Threats - The monotone environments are exhausting to play through.
Can’t wait to play this and give it the sweet, sweet love it deserves. I wanted to play Apotheon so bad in 2014. I’m surprised I never pirated it. The trailer completely captivated me at the time. I love Greek Mythology, and to bring petroglyphs to life via gaming is just genius. It’s a level of artistic creativity I honestly haven’t seen in a while. Apotheon played well on the Steam Deck, but I’d prefer to play it on PC going forward since it's a beautiful game. Moreover, platformers such as Apotheon require you to throw spears, bows, and javelins at enemies from all directions, and a mouse is just more precise.
Good action game with a few puzzles, lots of secrets, and real bits of mythology sprinkled everywhere
Artstyle is incredible, gameplay is solid, 10/10 recommend!
TL;DR : The game is pretty good. It's also dirt cheap during the sales. Worth the try IMHO. Full review : It's unique and intriguing in its graphic design and how that is intertwined in the storytelling. As if all you do while playing is a story or myth being told through the drawings on antique clay pots. The combat is where the game excels for me. I wasn't expecting much because the game looked like an old 2000s, early 2010s browser flash game. But the combat mechanics are deep, allowing you to get as technical as desired. With timing, strategy and coordination all coming into play. There's a wide array of weaponry to choose from, divided into a few subtypes. Each type with it's own benefits and cons, affecting reach, attack speed, attack pattern and damage. You also have support items to buff, heal and even summon allies to further expand the possibilities of combat. The audio design shocked me almost as much as the combat, in the sense that it's GOOD and I wasn't expecting that. The game is fully dubbed in English (haven't checked other languages) and pretty good at that, the voice acting is not award-winning but it's pretty good. The sounds of the weapons clashing during combat is solid (pun intended) and the variety of sounds, in general, is very much appreciated. The music is fitting and is not jarring or distracting, but I didn't pay it much attention until the final fight, to be honest. The level design is alright. It's not extraordinarily complex and the way you move around and interact with the world doesn't change much as you progress (which is personally something I'm quite fond of in other metroidvanias, like Hollow Knight). Most of the unlocking new areas business is done through keys/locked doors or directly tied to story progression and not through movement or new "abilities". Still, I didn't have much trouble traversing the levels, solving puzzles or finding secrets when I was putting my attention towards doing that. So I'm not going to complain much about it. There are, however, a few areas where it's a bit awkward to fight, this is most apparent in caves or narrow spaces where there are multiple enemies of differing size. Also the
navigating part with the ship and the Sink the Fleet style grid
was pretty interesting. The story is pretty much linear, it didn't seem as if doing the secondary stuff affected the story in any way other than unlocking equipment, buffs and achievements. The plot is fine, somewhat similar to that of the God of War trilogy but with it's own kind of little twists, especially in the way the Gods and Goddesses are portrayed. Don't expect a narrative masterpiece from this game and you'll be able to enjoy the gameplay and have some fun swinging maces around and thrusting spears forward. All in all, really surprised by Apotheon. I didn't expect the level of polish the game has. The scope of the game is big when compared to it's length and that helps deliver a delightful yet easily digestible and entertaining experience.
The visuals are amazing and made me feel like it was the gods indeed.
I have played the Campaign three separate times, and it has saved my progress zero times. How am I supposed to beat the game when the game never saves my progress? All in one session? F Off. I still have achievements from the progress I made! Yet the game throws me into the tutorial as if I accomplished nothing.
