Antichamber

Time Played:
9.6 Hours
Last Played:
12th of February, 2016

I was expecting to like this one, me intentionally going in with as little knowledge as possible, however, the credits inspired satisfaction...but also sadness. Little did I know, when getting both this, and Deadcore in the same order I'd not only play 2 of the best games I ever have, but they were so deeply loved, and wildly-unique by my measure, a void shaped like both games would exist for many a year within me. Even in modern times, this void was only patched over with time, never filled.
Yay:
+ It adopts the style of a semi-open, ability-gated platformer, like Metroid, or latter-day Castlevania. +I thought the puzzles incredibly rewarding, and fun to figure out... + ...especially because the game does not hand-hold, or patronise at all, merely gives you the tools, and lets you solve. + Art is minimalist, yes, but also stylised in a way the complements the game. + It's somehow quite colourful in areas. + I thought it very fun to explore, and find secrets. + A hidden dev room exists, but that's up to you to find. + I found the upgrades to be a rather refreshing part + I llove first-person puzzle games as a concept. + While I've not played it in almost a decade, I find nostalgia just thinking about my time with it.
Meh:
~ Hidden collectible blocks exist throughout the game, and are seemingly for use on a door, but the amount of slots on its perimeter are greater than the amount of cubes, giving it a slightly-unfinished feel. The developer apparently replayed it, though., so this may be fixed in an update.
Nay:
- Unremembered, outside of “it ends”.

Verdict:
A complete triumph of game design that respects the player's abilities, and remained engaging from first second to last, in my eyes. Very rarely is anything played, and loved to such a degree by me, that it leaves a hollow in my being, so that alone would put it in...
Placed in:
1: Fantastically-Favoured
