Reviews

Unfortunately I would not recommend this game even though it pains me, it's a pretty good indie game that's fun to play in co-op. I won't burry the lead: the map and bad UX kill this game and make it super hard to recommend, its buggy and very useless making a metroidvania like this with back tracking a pain instead of fun. It is not an easy game and maybe could be balanced better but overall good game with a terrible, recommendation killing UX. There is, apparently, no way to even map opening of the in game map to a button in the controller settings. The PS5 controller is recognized but there is just no option to do it. Or any of the other menu's (upgrades, quest log, etc). You can "fix" this using steam inputs and mapping the `m` key to your controller's select button, but steam doesn't remember the setting on each launch and it is an extra step every time I reboot my computer. And outside of the annoying bug, the map itself is just useless which makes a game like this with a lot of back tracking pretty impossible to play unless you go out of your way to make your own map. You can't place markers, what they choose to show on the map vs not seems pretty random, and good luck remembering where an important quest item was or a good place to grind for coins. I guess you could argue it was a design choice, but it is the 2020s, if I want to put markers I can take picture of the map on my phone and do it tediously like I could have hand drawn one in 1990. Because I didn't want to deal with the map and trying to find where a place to grind some coins was, I never finished the game and just abandoned it on the final boss. I just couldn't justify the effort of wondering around for no reason to grind out the coins to keep buying health packs. The game itself is challenging but I think fair. I would not call it an easy game by any means. Could be better balanced, the grind for coins could be a little less stingy, the teleport could be tuned better. But overall I would say its a good game except of the terrible map. The gameplay is pretty unique and you don't get a lot of couch co-op metroidvainas of this type. It really does pain me to no rec but....that map making me not finish the game really was the deciding factor.
Anima Flux is a co-op metroidvania set on a crumbling space ark, where two genetically enhanced soldiers alternate between ranged and melee combat. A mutant outbreak in a dystopian city sets the pair hunting an escaped specimen. Movement abilities determine the game's quality, since combat only becomes comfortable once a dash unlocks partway through the adventure. Before that point encounters rely on jumping and positioning, and enemy body-blocking leaves little room to escape damage. The first boss fight is the campaign's biggest stumble, arriving before the dash and demanding the evasion the game has not yet provided. Roughly ten deaths at that encounter mark the run's lowest stretch, and the encounter poses a genuine early-exit risk. Data logs reward exploration with the ark's hidden history and the darker truths behind the regime's resurrection technology. These discoveries give the dystopian premise real weight as the two soldiers question their orders. Instant character switching lets the archer and swordsman cover each other, while the cutscenes give the grim setting a strong visual style. Later bosses play far better once the dash exists, and traversal improves as double jumps and dashes open up the map. A late gauntlet fight is the weakest stretch, since the melee companion takes damage from endless spawns despite his usual immunity during boss battles. The most serious technical fault is a controller-disconnect bug that can leave the game entirely unresponsive. Overall, combat improves steadily once the dash arrives, and the enjoyable closing hours outweigh the rough opening. The lore, the cutscene style and the best of the later boss fights make this a metroidvania worth persevering with.
big bug
