NIce card game
One of my favorite card roguelikes out here. Definitely would recommend to anyone.
Ancient Enemy is a strategy-driven card battler from Grey Alien Games that blends fantasy storytelling with solitaire-inspired mechanics in a way that feels both accessible and surprisingly tactical. Rather than leaning entirely into traditional deckbuilding systems, the game builds its identity around familiar card foundations while introducing combat encounters, progression systems, and exploration elements that create a richer experience than players might initially expect. The result is a dark fantasy adventure that rewards planning, efficiency, and adaptability. The game unfolds in a world that has already suffered defeat. Darkness has spread across the land, civilization has crumbled, and monstrous threats now dominate what remains of society. Instead of presenting players as legendary heroes preventing disaster, Ancient Enemy places them in the aftermath of catastrophe. This narrative direction immediately establishes a different atmosphere compared to many fantasy titles. The world feels damaged and worn down, giving the journey a lonely but compelling sense of purpose. Gameplay revolves around card-clearing mechanics that resemble solitaire, but the familiar structure quickly develops additional complexity. Players arrange sequences, build combinations, and clear cards while balancing offensive and defensive considerations. Success is not purely dependent on fortunate draws. Strategic decisions become increasingly important as encounters grow more difficult and enemies introduce new challenges. Resource management, ability usage, and timing all contribute to victory. Combat serves as one of the game's strongest features. Hostile creatures possess unique strengths and behaviors that force players to adjust their approach rather than relying on a single strategy. Some battles reward aggressive play while others demand patience and careful planning. Building longer chains creates stronger opportunities, but committing too heavily to offense can leave players vulnerable. This balance creates tension throughout encounters and keeps combat engaging across the campaign. Character growth provides an additional layer of depth. Players gradually unlock magical abilities, equipment upgrades, and various enhancements that influence performance in battle. The progression system encourages experimentation while allowing players to develop strategies that complement personal playstyles. Whether emphasizing survival tools or offensive advantages, progression feels meaningful without becoming unnecessarily complicated. Ancient Enemy also benefits from excellent pacing. The structure alternates naturally between combat encounters, exploration opportunities, and narrative moments, preventing the gameplay loop from becoming repetitive. Traveling through ruined territories and confronting increasingly dangerous enemies creates a satisfying sense of progression that keeps the adventure moving forward consistently. Visually, the game embraces dark fantasy aesthetics effectively. The world feels bleak without becoming visually overwhelming. Environmental artwork communicates a sense of loss and decay while enemy designs reinforce the oppressive atmosphere. The presentation relies more on mood and artistic consistency than technical spectacle, but that choice ultimately strengthens the game's identity. The ruined landscapes and corrupted surroundings help sell the idea of a world struggling to recover from devastation. The soundtrack and audio presentation further reinforce immersion. Music remains subtle but effective, supporting exploration and combat without becoming distracting. Sound effects provide satisfying feedback during encounters while helping maintain tension during more dangerous moments. The audio design complements the slower strategic pacing and contributes significantly to atmosphere. Difficulty options also help broaden the game's appeal. New players can approach Ancient Enemy without feeling overwhelmed, while experienced strategy fans can increase the challenge to create more demanding encounters. This flexibility allows players to engage with the systems at their preferred pace while maintaining the satisfaction that comes from mastering increasingly difficult scenarios. Narratively, Ancient Enemy favors environmental storytelling and atmosphere over lengthy dialogue or heavily scripted storytelling. Some players may want more detailed character interactions or a larger emphasis on plot development, but the restrained approach aligns well with the game's lonely tone. The journey feels personal and focused, emphasizing survival and determination within a collapsing world. Perhaps the game's greatest achievement lies in how naturally it merges genres. Ancient Enemy does not feel like solitaire with fantasy decorations attached to it, nor does it abandon its card-game foundation entirely. Instead, it successfully combines strategy, progression, and storytelling into something distinct. Players who enjoy thoughtful tactical gameplay, fantasy settings, and slower-paced strategic experiences will likely find plenty to appreciate. Grey Alien Games delivers a polished and creative experience that transforms familiar mechanics into something engaging and memorable. Ancient Enemy proves that innovation does not always require reinventing entire genres. Sometimes strong design comes from refining proven ideas and combining them thoughtfully. While some players may desire greater complexity or larger-scale progression systems, the game succeeds by remaining focused on delivering satisfying strategy wrapped inside an atmospheric fantasy adventure. For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

The core +1/-1 mechanic just wasn't fun to me.
Fun game.
A variation on solitaire that adds mechanics without getting too bogged down - was easy enough on Relaxed that I beat the game but not so easy that it was totally without challenge and friction. I liked it so much I might actually go back for the higher difficulties, and would say it's an easy recommend if you're interested enough to be reading this review.
I really enjoyed this game. It's simple but addictive and the RPG mechanics add a nice layer of depth to the solitaire style gameplay. I enjoyed it so much that I was a little disappointed that I couldn't go back with the same character and improve my runs. I brought this up with the developer and they seemed responsive and open to feedback. After playing I realised that I have another one of their games in my library (Shadow Hand), so looking forward to trying that one and will be on the lookout for whatever they make next.
I'm surprised how much fun this game is. Got it in a bundle, so I didn't play it until today, and it's really fun. A bit of deckbuilding together with some mahjong style gameplay. Recommend.
Nice, relaxing game, that gives what promised.
