Ameagari no Hanabi indeed delivers a "mild story", but with very satisfying gameplay! Honestly it's quite a shame that there aren't more levels or fighting done in the game. It starts quite slow with more of a focus on platforming until the last few levels where fighting takes more of a center stage. The mechanics of the game involve a "floaty" jump, and using your fireworks to defeat enemies and glide. Very important part of the game, as it allows you to fly past large portions of stages. With the addition of platform momentum, this lets you make some pretty neat jumps. I really enjoy using the firework glide to make jumps a little more precise (especially on moving platforms) and destroying enemies, as most of them can be jumped over. Although, this glide mechanic is only available to "handheld" fireworks. Throughout the game, you have different types of fireworks to use, each with different power levels and star usage (stars being a type of MP used by shooting fireworks). Despite the variety, I found myself really only using 3. Firework spoiler:
the Dandelion, Cherry Blossoms, and Hydrangea were my go-tos. The power of the Hydrangea is just great for clearing enemies and bosses before getting the Blossoms.
It would be great if each firework had more time to shine in its own strengths, rather than being either very situational or just somewhat more powerful alternatives. I also would like if the camera didn't focus and lock to firework explosions instead of staying on Hanaby and zooming out as she moves away from the explosions. An understandable design choice though, as the main focus of this "mild story" is on fireworks, emphasized by the name of our titular protagonist: Hanaby. Hanaby is a young squirrel [strike]pyromaniac[/strike] firework fanatic who sets out to become an adult and venture outside of her village, in search of fireworks and the cause of all the recent flooding rain. And boy, it's really as simple as that. Honestly, major/unavoidable dialogue serves more of just an excuse to push Hanaby forward to the next level. Not much is expanded on regarding the world, nor Hanaby, for the most part until near the end. Although, I still enjoyed taking time to talk to each NPC I came across and reading their down-to-earth dialogue. Also quite enjoyable is the soundtrack to this game. Each track is very fitting for their respective stage! Really puts the background in background music, with one stage and song being an absolute standout banger:
X-Rated Xanadu
. Lacking excitement, the simplicity gives the game a very casual vibe, making it easy to just pick up and have fun with. This means it's also easy to end up finishing the game in one go! I started this review right after completing the game at 2.2 hours. 2.2 hours! Certainly a short game, but not lacking in replay value, as after completing the game, there is a NG+ mode every time you complete the game (which increases the damage you take with each run), along with a Speedrun mode with the first completion. While I would've liked to see the game go on longer, what it does have to offer is quite enjoyable, and can definitely recommend if you're looking for a low investment platformer and just want to have fun.
A short but adorable game that draws from so many different interesting concepts and art styles in each of its levels. Great for speed-running at a later date, and the higher level difficulties after completion to give a decent challenge. But overall, the first time is really all you need unless you're going for all the achievements. It's fun, cute, quick, and if you want the extra challenge, you can find it here.
why in the everloving hell is there giant vibrators as obsticals. fun game though
