Are you looking for an emotional game with an interesting story, incredible soundtracks and decent voice acting while experiencing a game with artistic and sometimes surrealistic visual graphics? Then The Last Show of Mr. Chardish is for you. Not all games about battle royales/PVP, having impossible challenges during platforming/parkour games, etc. Story oriented games could be called a niche genre, mainly created to adults because of their deep thoughts. These games offer much lower playtime than other games while the asking price is still 15-20$+. Considering a purchase is still a valid option if you like to support quality games with a deep meaning instead of buying the 500th reskin of a boring shooter.
Variety of gameplay
Interesting gameplay still required to sell a story. Usually, these kinds of games end up as walking simulators with puzzles. The Last Show of Mr. Chardish successfully tried to be different. Each act offers a different gaming experience. You can still find your puzzles, but then you can also expect sword fighting, platforming, a bird simulator and coloring a gray world to bring life and love to it. The acts you experience as Ella, the protagonist of the game, feels like remembering old theatre plays she participated in, but I believe that these acts represent the missed opportunities in life, wrong decisions, heartbreaking missed chances with someone you love while that feeling is mutual. The ending is like a dream, about a world and feelings Mr. Chardish could have been experienced, but decisions can’t be changed… Yes, The Last Show of Mr. Chardish will break your heart.
Conclusion
A story oriented game and for those 3 things required to make it sellable and entertaining: A good story, decent voice acting and incredible soundtracks. The Last show of Mr. Chardish successfully mixed these into one game. Story: 9/10 Very interesting, sometimes heartbreaking story. Voice Acting: 9/10 I liked it, my opinion is very subjective but I think it is very good. Replay value: 1/10 Story rich game, it has nothing to offer on the second playthrough, unless you play it again after a few years and you have a bad memory. Atmosphere: 9/10 Good story, decent voice acting, awesome soundtracks….. Yes, you can forget about the world while playing this game. Visuals: 9/10 Looks nice, sometimes surreal. It is colorful and cute. Not realistic graphics, it provides a more artistic visual experience. Music/Sound effects: 10/10. Art games come with decent music. This game is not an exception. Game difficulty: 1/10 Emotional and not challenging game. The puzzles, the “combat” isn’t hard at all.
Hey, I am an achievement hunter!
Perfection time: 4-6h. 1 playthrough enough, but there are many missable achievements and the total amount of collectibles HUGE. A whole playthrough could be done in 3h at first time without guides and chapter select available, so perfection is far from hard. I made a written+screenshoot collectible+achievement guide which include a walkthrough video if you get stuck on any part of the game: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2278081327 If you liked the review or you like to earn achievements, but in enjoyable, fun and entertaining games, then please follow my Average Achievement Hunter curator or just check out our curated games. The Last Show of Mr Chardish is an excellent narrative style game with delightful hand painted watercolour graphics. It tells the story of Robert Chardish and the female protagonist Ella who co-founded a theatre in the British countryside. Their relationship and successes and failures are revealed as Ella wanders through the now abandoned theatre. The obsessive ambition of Robert and the blurring of real life and make believe comes under scrutiny. The narrative is dictated as Ella walks around picking up notes and highlighted objects in the theatre. Picking up a mask activates a chapter about one of their plays. The game is very emotional....full of regret, lost chances, dashed hopes and dreams, joy and love, anger and disappointment. Each chapter contains collectables which activate a voice recording about a memory or conversation. The game play in each chapter is different as you take on a variety of characters. You are an active member in a play and the role play can be charming and exciting. It will thrill the actor in many people! No time to get bored as there is plenty to do. The story is really poignant and moving and draws you in with its emotion and charm. I found the narrative voices good and clear. Music was subtle and never drowned out the narrative. Game play was clunky at times, especially with the flying sequence, but still doable on keyboard. There are two endings to this game. There is the ability to replay each level to chase down the missing achievements which is what I did....hence my long play time! There are many checkpoints in each chapter which is a swirling circle telling you that you've reached it. I found this game an enriching experience and I'm sure many of you will be able to relate to it in some way. 8.5/10
Happy days you pretend That your love will never end There's that melody again Roxy Music - Running Wild (тут і далі)
Where it's coming from I must have been Drifting out of time, now I'm in Underneath you'll find I'm just the same Running wild, like you do When all your dreams fall through
The Last Show of Mr. Chardish is a story with multiple layers and is made up of a central framework with 5 very distinct 'mini-adventures.' The sound track is enjoyable and the voice acting well done. The primary story is played from a first person perspective and is much like a walking simulator, exploring an old theater. You are Ella, an actress returning to your history at the request of Mr. Chardish (a person you worked closely with in your past). You walk through the ruins of the theater, listening to a taped interview with Chardish. You examine items lying about (collectibles) and listen to snippets of remembered conversations. You find several masks in the theater and putting on each submerges you in an adventure based on a play by Chardish. These vary in artistic style and objectives. The mechanics of each are very different, as well. Within each of 5 segments, there are collectibles that contain more recordings of conversations to build out the history of your own past with the man and the theater. The segments have different styles of puzzles with a common theme of using the environment to build your path through a surreal landscape. The game saves at 'checkpoints' so if you exit between save points, you will lose some progress. There is an indicator that tells you when the game is saving so this is manageable. Most of the game uses the WASD keys and the mouse to move in the standard manner for a game built with the Unreal Engine. There is some minor platforming and the biggest hazard is falling from an edge or missing a jump which restarts the game from the last checkpoint. There are some sections that differ a bit in terms of controls. The 'Anger' play involves minor swordplay (against pinata-like forms) that requires pointing and clicking in the proper direction. There is no penalty for failure and nothing is fighting back so this was easy for me. The 'Day Dreaming' play requires a good bit of clicking as you add color to your world and the 'Synchronicity' play involves clicking to clear obstacles from your path (since you are on wheels and cannot jump over things). In the 'Ascension' section, about half the chapter is played as a bird. I personally found this impossible with a keyboard and mouse. I switched to a controller, slowed down the control responsiveness and inverted the horizontal. I was able to get through the chapter but really struggled. Flight sims have never been my strong suit. To make matters worse, the boundaries of the game are 'soft' so I continued to fly into spaces outside of the game world which resulted in a 'stuttering' and stuck bird and required a restart from the last checkpoint. Overall, I enjoyed the game and the discovery process as notes/letters are found and conversations/memories are heard. Without getting into spoiler territory, you have a choice to make at the end of the game. Your response changes one minor detail before the credits immediately begin to roll. Thus, this felt very anticlimactic and added little to the game itself. I recommend this to those who enjoy variety in their game-play, don't mind a brief incarnation as a bird, and take pleasure in having a story unfold through narrative bits found along the way. ONE ADDED NOTE: When circling back through specific chapters to pick up missed achievements, be prepared for some frustration. If you miss anything or fail at a task, you are likely to have to replay the chapter from the beginning to try again (backtracking is blocked or game progresses to next savepoint).
I hate to neg on a game too hard when it's apparent a small team put a lot of time and effort into it, but I found The Last Show of Mr. Chardish incredbily dull and lifeless. The primary thing to making a decent walking sim is that the walking part of the game is at least interesting. Some of the first person environments were pretty nice looking, but 75% of this game are the play "vignettes" which I honestly found tedious. With the exception of robot puzzle, most of this game feels like playing a platformer with no platforming. Just running from point A to point B. Then running from A to B while adding color to the path. Then flying from A to B, The third vignette, Anger, is literally just running from A to B while punching 100 pinatas along the way. The cherry on top is the stroy just doesn't support the dull gameplay. You're supposed to believe you're witnessing the last remaining art of a talented artist, but it's hard to imagine even the most tripped out acid heads in the 70s enjoying the actual plays of these boring vignettes. Sorry to hate. Appreciate the work people put into small games, but I wholly did not enjoy this experience no matter how short it was.
I really like the idea, but the excecution is very flat. This game has a bit of an identity crisis. It wants to present a metaphorical, artistic narrative but then gets lost in incredibly basic and repetitive non puzzle-platforming. It's not gameplay focused, but still tries to have some gameplay, then doesn't deliver on the strong aesthetic presentation something like this would need to work. There is this neat brushstroke texture design style, but it starts and ends there. Evoking emotion with art doesn't require looking painted, it requires composition, color, lighting, and especially the lighting is so flat and uninspired - even in a level that has light as a mechanic - it's truly tragic.
Very Edith Finch-inspired walking sim set around an old theater after the death of its featured playwright; as you explore, you'll find various masks, each of which sends you into a fantasy world inspired by one of the plays, with each world having its own distinct gameplay mechanics. Not nearly as good as Edith Finch, unsurprisingly (the "plays" feel very little like anything that could have been performed on a stage, and their central mechanics are nicely distinct from one another but don't tie into the story nearly as well), but it's still an admirably ambitious walking sim for a project that I imagine was developed on much less resources than Edith Finch, and manages to be polished enough to warrant a one-sitting play.
